Weird Weather of '09!! ....... #1

Eugene, OR

Beahive...what a mess. Even the fairies aren't safe in this 'weird weather'. Love your stack pots, those are fun to do.
Hopefully you won't have any more casualties. I've seen those upside down pots at the fair, haven't tried them yet. I think your link was less expensive.

Laura....Hope you're having a wonderful day!

Quoting:
What I wouldn't give to have 24 hours where I'm not responsible for anyone else and didn't have to do something.

If you figure out how that is done, let me know. It has to include not thinking about what you should be doing.

Susan..I've always had to hold my own so to speak. But must admit at 65 I'm slowing down. And yes the younger ones today don't make the mark. A big laugh a friend and I had when I retired (she had earlier than I) was they had to hire 5 people to replace me. Partly me and partly because my crew didn't work as hard for the new people.
Can't blame them, why work harder than everyone else?

Portland....glad your laptop survived. Had us worried there a bit.

Here's a picture of my topsy, turvey pots( or tipsy, turvey). That's what they called them on another thread, in yard art I think. Not as lush as beahive's. Not bad for a first try. I pulled mine up for winter though. Was afraid the terra cotta wouldn't make it. Home Depot had some really pretty terra cotta pots, more expensive though. I don't do expensive if I can avoid it and especially not on an experiment. LOL

Sally..yours is very pretty. I will most likely rebuild mine when I can find some pots on sale. The bottom two largest ones did not break..so it should not be to much $$ to replace the 5 smaller ones that broke. Good Idea to take these down during winter. Still need to break the old CA ways..just leaving everything outdoors in the winter. Been an expensive winter already... the birdbath was the worse..still sad aboud that one..

Dallas, OR(Zone 8a)

This is not the picture I am looking for , but this one shows the down under pot with the petunias's in the background. A bit blurry, but trust me..they were very pretty.

Found the pic of the fairy garden this summer. A bit overgrown, but the faries like it that way. They have more hiding spaces!

Hey Sally - enough about slowing down! It sounds to me like you do a lot. I'm 61 and starting to feel aches & pains in new places and I'm petrified that if I slow down it will be a slippery slope. You have been hauling 40 & 50 pound bags around so it seems you are strong an din good shape!
Beahive I think you need to face the fact that your poor little mangled fairy was a bad influence on the rest. Surely she incited the gang to steal your plant markers! You should probably check the garden for contraband...

(Judi)Portland, OR

The summer fairy garden is wonderful - and does look overgrown. I like overgrown!

(Judi)Portland, OR

whoops - pushed send.
Overgrown gardens are the best. They look more natural and the lushness is appealing. Yours reminds me of an English garden. Very pretty!

Bend, OR(Zone 5a)

Sally, if you're looking for inexpensive terra cotta pots, try Walmart. These are obviously hanging pots but they have standing as well and they also come in grey. They may be plastic, made out of recycled material, but I love mine. They come in different shapes and sizes too.

Sally, your Topsy Turvey pots and garden is very pretty also. Now I can't wait to make one. I definitely NEED a fairy garden. I have a few fairies, but they really need a nice garden, and the poor little things don't have any furnishings. I think most of my little boys have broken arms.

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY Laura, have a grand day.
Hugs

Oh Bee, how sad to lose the fairy let alone the pots too. I remember the tread last spring when you made them.

Portland, so glad you didn't lose your laptop, and you are back with us. I spilt coffee on my keyboard once, had sticky keys for the longest time. LOL
I like the foam pots, sturdy and strong plus lightweight.

Funny about the younger men these days. I am almost 57 have had 2 back injuries and still stronger and smarter than any of the guys at work.
Its not really about the lifting its all about how you do it. We have a lot of furniture that is heavy and awkward its all about physics and leverage.
And not one of them knows how. if you can't pick it up roll it, or get a hand truck. No they want to man handle it on a flat bed cart, which means to pick it up. 'Dum' I walk up with the hand truck and take it right out. And I get the look
'Way to go', Susan show them young pups. LOL

Dallas, OR(Zone 8a)

Thanks for your sympathy all. We will carry on and get things back into shape when weather permits.

My four legged girls are ready for the next storm in their new sweaters. (if I can get them to go outside.) They don't like the rain & snow and wet ground. Thanks goodness they are little dogs & for potty pads! Would have a real problem if they were great danes!

They are too cute

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

Thank you all for the birthday wishes!

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

Happy Belated Wishes to a fellow Goat, Z!
(and wear that one proudly!)

Susan - you are correct - my folks live in Bend east of Pilot Butte. I did not make it down there last summer as I wished - still hearing the mini-lectures, lol!

We are being graced with the wind today & probably will lose power - always the first to lose, & the last to have it restored.
I have not had any pots blow over, but back in October my the wind toppled my iron arch with a massive Cobaea scandens. The Cobaea never uprooted and kept the arch at a 20° angle. Strong vine!

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

Beahive, sorry about your pots. That's not good. Hopefully the fairies will get over the trauma soon. Hopefully, after friday, there won't be much more of a chance fore them to get hurt outside. Your Girls are cute in their sweaters.

Tilly and gardener105, I agree with you whole heartly about using brains to get things down faster, better, and easier. On my work crews we have a saying that "brains before brawn causes better work, in half the time, for the same pay." Most of the time we cut it down to simply "brains always wins the battle before brawn."

I love your 'yard art' Sally. That's the best place for it!

Portland, most of the time I wish that I could function on my schedule!! I'm glad that your laptop got along all right with the tea. that doesn't happen often.

Laura, if you ever get your 24 hours of peace, be sure to let all of us know how you did it!! Happy birthday again!

Union, WA(Zone 8b)

We finally had rain today and the snow is melting quickly. Roads are bare and that's a big help. My DH had some toe surgery in Shelton at 4:00 so I had to drive home after dark. It was raining with fog and not fun at all.

This is such a great place to visit and read about all your experiences. I'm 70 and I drive a truck and do more than most my age also. Plan to stay that way for at least another ten.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

Wow Willow, I would've never have guessed 70. That's awesome! Keep driving that truck too! It must be nice to finally be unthawing! I think that this is the most anxious for spring that I've ever been.

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

I am always reading bits from posts to my DH......Tilly you have his vote........says good for you....sometimes it is knowing when not to try and pick up things....he agrees with you wholeheartedly.

BeeHive! Hush! They are adorable little furbies and THEY don't know they aren't Great Danes!!! They really are precious!

Willow, good for you! You sound like my mum, she just turned 80 and is still going strong, I just hope I take after her.

Had a great afternoon....took Laura out to the Barn (a really nice local Garden Center) to shop for a birthday present courtesy of one of our DG groups........she got a beautiful Diana wall art piece.....she will have to post a picture of it for you.

It has been a long night, I made it to spin class, probably should have stayed home, it really took it out of me.....still not quite over the cold bit....then had 2 hard ciders at dinner, won't have any trouble sleeping tonight.......... think I am going to call it an early night.

Shelly and All have a good night!

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

lol.... glad that you had a good day, even if worn. G'night.

Eugene, OR

Good Night Trisha, sounds like you're due for a good rest. Don't want that cold coming back on you.

Thank you on the pots, that was fun. Sis sent me a link for the other forum, and decided to try.
I tried looking at Wal Mart for the pots, I couldn't find any with a big enough hole in the bottom. If it's too small I didn't think it would lean the way it's supposed to. The pole I bought was probably overkill, it's actually square, found it at HD too. And the pots I bought at HD weren't bad at all. I'll probably look for some pretty ones this year, now I know it works well. Should have put the petunias in a bit more sun though. But I chose because it's in line with my favorite chair!

Got the outside decorations down, and working on the inside. It's beginning to look alittle drab around here. Oh well, another week and I'll be covered in dust from the cupboard work.

Beahive...love your 'girls' I think it's wet paws and wet bellies that they don't like.

Warmer here today and dry for once. New storm coming in, rain the next couple of days and they actually mentioned the s-- word for Friday. WOW that would be different!

Eugene, OR

It's been really windy here for the last two hours.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

I think you were the only night owl last night Sally. Hopefully you still have power. Our Tv went out, but that's one I can live without anyhow. I highly doubt that you place is ever drab. It seams like there's always something going on there.

Dallas, OR(Zone 8a)

sally..true they do not like to get wet. An inch of snow ..they are knee deep or the grass needing to be mowed wet bellies. Bath time is always fun too!
Windy & rainy this morning. Dreary!

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

I think that you pretty much summed up the last 3 or 4 weeks there Beahive...... Dreary. I would bet that it's sort of funny watching your two try to get through tall grass or something like that.

Bend, OR(Zone 5a)

BeaHive, you're too funny! Even these crazy Labs of mine don't like the rain, they love the snow though!
Kayte, I know how you feel about those mini lectures. I get them from my parents all the time as they live here too! I don't see them very often as they live in Wood River Village and I don't like going down into the deep freeze during the winter. It doesn't thaw until about May since it's next to the river.
Susan

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

I wouldn't go there either Susan. You can slide down in to it, but you might not be able to get back out of there! Or at least not for quite a while.

Bend, OR(Zone 5a)

rc, that's EXACTLY how I feel! LOL! I often wish they'd never bought a place there.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

lol, I'm wondering why They Did?

(Judi)Portland, OR

Very windy here this morning - grey and wet. Dreary is the right word!

Carnation, WA(Zone 7b)

Power's back on - yea! Very rainy, windy and warm now. We have very little snow left, only the piles from days of shoveling. Water truck will arrive today to refill the reserve tank as we still have no well service. Broken/frozen pipes are fixed in the barn and all problems were above ground. Lots of excitement since we arrived here in Washington.

Bet you never thought you'd hear a newbie say they love to see the rain - but I do as that means we can begin to sort out the well issues and finish some outside stuff before spring. Schools are closing early today and perhaps for the rest of the week as we have flooding in Carnation and one bridge is already closed.

Happy Belated Birthday Laura.

Hope everyone stays safe and dry during this round of weather.

(Judi)Portland, OR

Ladybugg so glad you have power again! It sounds like you have been through a lot with the weather. I hope the flooding does not get too bad.

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

Wind isn't too bad right now but the rain is coming down in buckets.......got a big surprise last night on the way home......since the snow is gone they finally at long last got the street lights on down the main street at the end of our little street!!!! they have been resurfacing, replacing all sewer, water and electric since around May......that street, with new blacktop and no striping yet has been sooooo dark and miserable to drive on, especially when you do not have great night vision to begin with!

My 60 lb. part lab lets me open the door, sticks her nose out for a sniff, sees the rain and goes Nope, ain't goin' out in THAT.......we just hold it a little longer. She has the most amazing bladder control of any dog I have ever seen! For which I am thankful!!!!

Have to swim over to Laura's to take her out for an appointment in a bit.....sure will be glad to get their car fixed. I am like my dog.....don't wanna go out in this stuff!

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

ladybug, I just said to DH and mom at dinner last night that I wondered if you had gotten water service yet. So glad to hear the update. You have had quite the initiation at your new place.

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

Gee I am going to have to move to Seattle to get the "bad" winter. We are blessed with43 F and raining on about 3' of packed snow on the ground. It will be good for our water table! Lots of floods this spring with all the water in the snow.

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

Laura and I are not in an area that will suffer from floods or slides but our entire county, as well as most of the state are under severe flood and slide conditions now....it is as bad, and may get worse than the flood in 2007.....we have entire towns having to evacuate that have never reached that state in over 20 to 40 years!! They are getting ready to shut down large sections of I-5......I hope all of you in these affected areas are in safe sections or have evacuated to safe places.....Please take care...our prayers are with all of you.

(Judi)Portland, OR

Wow - all of you please be safe. There are flood warnings in Portland as well but not life threatening. Just water in basements I think. Those of you in worse situations be careful!

Buckley, WA(Zone 7b)

Our little town has voluntary evacuation notices today. I helped with the sandbagging this afternoon. The firestation was flooding, but the houses across the street on the river now has the river raging through their yards. I should have brought my camera. All the roads except for one going into town was closed. We are in the country about a mile from town, so we are not in any danger except for the road closures. One of the roads that is closed is the one that goes to Orting. Orting is about 10 miles down the road from us, and they are having major flooding. The news said over 20,000 people were evacuated. I hope the worse is over for them.

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

It is bad in so many places....Lynn, glad to hear you are in a safe area.........they are showing Orting and talking about the evacuation on TV right now...

I have been out with Laura looking at houses.....they have to move soon....told her at least this will show her what the house it like in the worst weather around here....they have to move by the first of March......our neighborhood is a trust and they have gone to a no pet policy......Laura has a letter from her Doctor that here cats are Companions and part of her therapy.....if they will let her have the cats here with those conditions the Duplex right next door to me is available......my mom lives in the other half of our duplex.....as Laura said.....four generations in a row....how cool would that be.....mom has lived here 24 years, I have been here 9...
If they can't work out something to buy the house they are renting right now, I would love to have them next door!!

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Good wishes being sent from Jersey. Be safe everyone.
Trisha, how cool that would be to have 4 generations close by.

(Judi)Portland, OR

4 generations together would be great. Trisha why did your neighborhood go to a no pets policy? It seems like that would exclude so many people!
Very windy here tonight, but I feel fortunate after Lynn's report.
