That's so cute Tilly. I absolutely LOVE black mondo grass. My favorite grass.

I agree Sally, it's a really interesting group of plants. Hard to believe that those plants are in the same group as poinsettias (sp?)

I'll wait to find out what that one is tomorrow. Good Night.

which one?

Good Night!

(Judi)Portland, OR

Fantastic photos - as usual! Red what is the plant with the pink & yellow flower? I want one!
I took the dog out for our morning walk to the dog park and when I stepped out of the door I was surprised at the cold. It is 24 degrees and frost is covering everything. Brrrrr.
My irises are making little shoots - hundreds of them! Won't those tender little things freeze? If they do, will they make more shoots in the spring? I have so much to learn! :-)
Sounds like some of you had some pretty bad weather with a lot of wind. Hope all is well now and power is on. The river here is running very swiftly and is quite brown. I hope people stay away from the edge.
Sally take photos of the before & after of your cabinets! It's great that you have a reliable person to do the work.
I don't know how you guys stay awake until 2 am. I would need a whole pot of coffee & a six pack of pepsi.

Currently 39 and partly sunny or is it partly cloudy? What's the difference any way?
On the hot tub, only if the neighbor would like to sell. It is real old. No way we could do a new one.

Eugene, OR

Portland.....Staying up late is not a chore for me. During my working years, I worked all shifts. The one I hated most was days, we started at 6:00 a.m., I had to go to bed way too early. Now I'm retired.....I go to bed when I want to.

My DSD wants before and after pics too. I had to detail what we were doing on the house all summer on a regular bases.LOL She didn't want to miss out.

It's cold here today too. The frost is just starting to leave, it's only 36 deg. Still going to try and get the decorations down at least....Hot Hands to the rescue again.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

Jan, Well, I hope that your neighbor is up for a new hot tub for themselves then! much better for you.

Thanks Portland! The pink and yellow is Polygala chamaebuxus ‘Kamniski’ . I just submitted the photo for plant files last night, so it might under it's namesake in the plant files by this evening. It's a really diversified genus, that's for certain. I agree, it was a little colder than we were thinking as well, but all in all..... still warmer that a couple of weeks ago, so I am happy! Your iris shoots may or may not freeze, it's fairly common for them to make an early showing. However, it won't hurt them a bit unless it's a flower shoot that freezes, which that would be odd that it would be a flower shoot coming up. Even if it were a flower bud that freezes, it really won't hurt the bulb, just more likely that you wont get blooms this season.

It is snowing here and very cold - again. It's beginning to stick so who knows what will happen through the night!

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

Uggghhh.. not again. I was hoping to be able to see the ground by tomorrow. Oh well. I was sort of thinking that snow might be going on somewhere. It has been sleeting here off and on in Eugene. So, I was thinking that by the time I get to my house that it would quite likely be snow again. I really wanted to do stuff around the yard tomorrow. But, I don't think that's going to happen. Oh well, such as is!! Good luck Portland. Hopefully it's nothing like the last go around with it.

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

Started snowing here about an hour ago. 36° & hope none sticks...

I am so pleased that I went to check out some of my raised beds, earlier today.
The first one I had amended (with leaves, coffee grounds & alfalfa pellets, back in November - seems like soooo long ago), had the most wonderful texture, and loads of worms. So, I heeled in some of the things that I had not gotten into the ground. A good thing accomplished.
By the way, 3 weeks ago, I had fashioned a sort of "igloo" structure with very large bags of paper shreddings from work. Plants went in the center, with a bag for the roof & a blankie on top, just in case. These plants were all young, & in pots, and stayed there for the snow & cold weather we had. Now they are heeled into the aforementioned raised bed. All this to say, bags of shreddings made for very nice insulation: everything was looking great & some continued to grow, albeit lacking for light. I use the shreddings year round for composting & soil-building. and really like the "free" aspect.

(Judi)Portland, OR

Katye - what kind of bags do you put the shreddings in? I have never heard of this before but it sounds like it makes so much sense. Are they like sand bags but with paper shreddings? Do tell!
Redchic I am assuming that you are back home and finished taking care of the other house and dog? If so, it must be nice to be home.

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

The shreddings are in large plastic bags - they average about 30" diameter compacted, so think 1/2 trashcan size???
They aren't so compacted that they couldn't be squished into shape; this made stacking easy. The trick was to top it off! I knew it was only temporary shelter, but I was so pleased as these were babies that I had grown all last year. I had wanted to bring them inside, but just no more room after the Brugs and other tenders came in...oh, and one Heather, which is looking confused!
Glad I had no bulbs to deal with this year! Just too much had to be done at the end of the season, and I ran out of Autumn, plain & simple.

The shreddings also work nicely in lasagna beds, and to cover the compost piles. Of course, they are not in the plastic bags...

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

Katye, that's a great idea. I'm glad that it's working for you. If you have access to the shreds, that's a great use for them!

Portland, thanks for thinking of me! I have been back home for about two weeks or so. But, not because I was done with the house/pet sitting. I was worried that I wouldn't be able to get to work if they didn't plow the roads early enough in the day (3 am is when I have to leave for work some weekdays) that I wouldn't be able to get to work. The ability to get to work, even in bad weather, was a condition of the job. So, I brought the dog home with me. I've went up and checked on the house fairly often, even though I usually end up having to walk the last 1/2 mi. or so due to the snow. Shadow, the dog, is getting along ok here. He doesn't like the fence. But oh well, it's several degrees warmer here, so I think that he's ultimately just as happy. With any luck, his people will be home on the 9th. Both he and my cats will be very happy when his people get home! :-p

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

I have 4" of snow and its still snowing, I left work early as my DH called and said how bad it was at home. Was not to at work. but when I got off the ferry, I thought OH S### a 15min. drive took me a hour +. Was going to go out (as I have the next 2 days off) to see what damage I have, guess thats not going to happen.

Eugene, OR

Tilly.....glad you have 2 days off!! Hopefully it's better by the time you go back.

Cold and rainy here too, and like rc says, sleety. At least we haven't had power outages like so many around us. As cold as it is, we could have snow tonight even in Eugene, but doubt it would stick.

I posted this orchid on the orchid forum trying to find out what it is. That I might as well share it with you too.

It has five spikes with loads of buds that take forever to open. But is really pretty and blooms for a long time. It's an oncidium, but I'm not sure which.

Here's a closer look.

I have never got into Orchids, so not much help here. It is gorgeous. I don't have to many indoor plants, house as sucky windows. And the big front room window, has my big bird cage in it with my Ficus tree that is 6' tall. So want a sun room of the kitchen. some day LOL

Eugene, OR

Orchid forum came through. They think it is Oncidium Twinkle 'Red Fantasy'. I thought it was a Twinkle wasn't sure.
I didn't grow orchids until we moved here. I have lots of windows in one room, almost floor to ceiling and wall to wall, plus windows on the other walls, but I still have to use grow lights for some of them in the winter. Gives me some pretties in the winter time.^_^

(Judi)Portland, OR

Red if you have to leave for work at 3 am and you are on DG until the wee hours of the night when do you sleep???
Sally - I am also retired (isn't it grand!) but I can't seem to stay awake past 11 or 12. The biggest treat is knowing you don't have to get up early and look presentable (I had to wear suits a lot) and you can sleep as late as you wish! The strangest thing about retirement is you begin to wonder just how you fit work into your life! Your orchid is beautiful.
There is a little over an inch of snow on the ground here. The roads are beginning to get slippery again. So many errands to do tomorrow but that may have to wait.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

Hehe... The days that I have to be to work that early, I'm usually not online the night before :-p Or if I do, then I'm usually online at 2 or 2:30 when I'm getting ready for work. Like Sally, my internal clock got really messed up after spending time working all sorts of shifts ranging from days, swings, to nights.

Good luck trying to get around tomorrow Portland. Hopefully nothing imperative pending to get done so that you can stay home if you want to.

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

Feeling lucky with about 1 1/2" so far. But we did do 2 donuts driving into the Gas station - the boys thought it was great - I was swallowing my heart again. I seem to do that a lot more the older I get. LOL - don't push me to the end faster than i need to get there!

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

OMG Katye. That was way to close of a call!!! stay home. Please!!! But, I'm so glad that all of you came out of it all right.

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

I had my heart in my throat coming down my road tonight, 2 cars behind me 3" of snow and snowing could not see 6' in front of me with the snow falling. and no tracks to follow. but got home safe, almost missed my drive. Still snowing.
