Starting the Weird Weather thread over to start fresh! Maybe even get back to normal, if we remember what that is :-p
So the best new year to come for all!
We came from here http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/935603/
The weather today was rain, followed by drizzle, followed by rain. Tomorrows outlook: rain, followed by rain, followed by snow.
I took this pic a few weeks ago, just before all the snow started

Weird Weather of '09!! ....... #1
I still like that picture.
I was wondering about the coast too, they're getting high winds too.
Thanks Sally! You're doing better than me! I didn't remember that I had posted it until you said that :-p now it's all coming back to me!
Yeah, I talked to some friends that are staying at the coast for the last few days, in Yachats, they said that it had been really windy today as well.
It has been absolutely pouring here for about the last hour or so.
Thanks for the new thread rc.
We got the high winds all night long again! UGH! We lost the top out of one of our Cottonwood trees and it also took a couple of large branches with it yesterday. No new branches on the ground this morning. DH put the ones that broke out in the chicken pen, they love pecking at them since there's probably bugs in them.
I hope everyone is doing well today.
Susan
Wow, what a night it was Gardner! I'm sort of surprised that more folks didn't lose power. I saw the special weather statement for your area. It wasn't pretty. glad that all you had was the top of the one tree. Did you get much snow with it?
It got pretty gusty here after midnight. The power went out for about an hour, but then all was good. For the last two hours I've had gusts of sideways snow. Sort of weird since it's not snowing when the wind doesn't blow. when the wind gusts, the snow comes with it. Now there's a helicopter hovering in the area, i'm guessing that they're checking on flood levels??? I was really hoping to get outside today and start cleaning up some of the stuff that was damaged under the weight of the snow, since it has finally melted!!! yeah!!!!
Hi redchic, no snow. DH said it poured rain for about 5 min yesterday morning around 5:30 when he was leaving for work. Haven't seen any rain since. I know what you mean about the snow blowing in, it does that around here too even when the sky is BLUE! Craziest thing you ever saw. But that's Central Oregon for you!
Susan
That would make a really cool picture Gardner! You should try to get one of the snow blowing in like that. It definitely must be a central Oregon thing! :-p This is the first time i've ever seen the snow come in with the wind! It's feels really odd to me.
We were all dressed up with no place to go for that wind storm. I think it completely missed us, which is highly unusual. Winter's not over yet. There is still time for people in my neighborhood to lose large fir trees that barely miss houses. I feel like I should go clean up all the little twigs and small branches, as well as the couple of large ones that fell due to the weight of snow and ice eariler. But then, why? It's only going to happen again before spring. Sort of like making the bed. I'm only going to get back into it later on.
Pixy, you're too funny!
Really windy here last night too. And it rained a lot. Actually had sunshine for a couple of hours today. DH kept asking what that bright thing was. LOL
We went back by the river, didn't have my camera, but it's down about 2 ft. Still running fast and muddy. Had errands to run so didn't get much done, it was nice to drive in the sunshine though. Hadn't seen it for awhile.
Cold tonight, down to 33 already and that's supposed to be the low for tonight. We should get some snow, but if it warms up like they say it won't stay. At least the winds have stopped. I heard most of Cottage Grove is without power, so we've been lucky so far.
Sally, they were showing some community (I missed which one) on the news near Portland that is flooded pretty bad. Looks like a couple feet of standing brown water. I hope you are staying high and dry. Flood and cold weather and snow too = misery!
Oh my I am so behind! I will try to read through the last thread today. The last of my Christmas guests left this morning and although I love them all so much I will admit to feeling joy and elation as the last minivan pulled away. The good news is that during the last few weeks we only made one trip to the emergency department when the two year old shoved a piece of beach glass up his nose. I have had guests since Thanksgiving and I am ready to have my quiet life back! It seems not one surface in the house is free from sticky fingerprints - and I keep finding food remnants everywhere. My pal Koka did very well with all the kids around but seems a bit more at ease today. Poor thing she was nearly hugged to death by little kids.
We woke up to snow yesterday morning but it is pretty much gone and we are expecting more rain today. Lots of places in Portland have flooding problems but I have been very lucky with just a little water in the unfinished portion of the basement. I hope you all have been equally lucky and don't have big problems with power, water, flooding, etc. I also hope you have all had great holidays!
Happy New Year to everyone -
Glad you can take a breath, now. Company - you love them while they're there, and love them when they leave. LOL Glad it was only one ER trip. So glad Koka made out okay with all the lovin she got.
Sideways snow, snow with wind, rain, and oh yes, more rain, threats of floods, new places for creeks YIKES!
Yesterday we went through snow showers on our way to Lancaster, PA for an overnight with sons' families. It was our Christmas to them. No gifts this year. 7 adults and 5 kids 4 and younger. The indoor pool and water park ( geared toward younger kids) was great. I especially liked the hot tub. Now DH wants one. HMMM, I wonder if our neighbor's use theirs anymore. One of our DDIL's got sick in the night. IT went through her family and she thought she had missed it, but no such luck. Hopefully Gma and Pop-pop won't get it. After the grandkids fell asleep, the kids came to our room and we played a game ( I think it was called Apples to Apples) It was really fun! Of course every minute or so someone listened at the doors across the hall where the gkids were sleeping. One night was plenty. As they age it will lengthen I'm sure.
We love Apples to Apples! It has been our tradition to play at family gatherings for the last 8 years or so. I bought the extension pack as a family gift this year, but it was a bit of a disappointment. We think they tried to put it too much in the vernacular rather than just adding more good words.
Sounds like everyone is having a good time, in spite of the weather. Good to hear.
We are high and dry here, thank you for asking. The river is still high, but not even close to being a problem. Our snow and ice is gone. Yeah!! Didn't get the snow that was predicted for last night and today, must have shifted. I spent half the day tending to my orchids so I didn't catch the forecast.
This pretty baby opened for me a couple of days ago.
What varieties are you growing, Sally?
A looong list. I've got the bug, bad. But I've run out of room, so can't get anymore unless I get rid of one. lol Phalenopsis, Dendrobiums, Oncidiums, BLC (personal favorite) for a few. I grow in the house, so I'm limited by the temperature and humidity requirements. I belong to a local society and have learned a lot about what I can and cannot grow in my environment. I have a Cymbidium in spike in my bathtub, where it spends the winter.
Portland, glad to hear from you and that you're staying out of the large puddles. It's sounds as if everything went pretty well with the family, minus the one trip to the ER. But, at least it was just one.
Jan... So will a hot tub be coming along with your new kitchen this summer? :-p I'm glad that you had a decent trip in spite of the snow. That's too bad for your DDil. Never fun.
Wonderful orchid Sally. Please post more! I can't grow them worth a darn, not enough light in the house. It snowed here all day yesterday and the day before. Not even pretty snow. Slushy crud. I'll post a picture. However, I was at work in Eugene today and it was an absolutely beautiful day in town!! I was soooo happy to see the sun! It was sort of cool out, but I didn't care. I stayed out and used my hot hands all day.
this pic was taken yesterday. It looked just like the day before it as well.
That picture gives me a shiver. brrrrrrrrr How's the runoff doing?
I've got 5 more orchids in spike, no blooms yet, but soon. I try to keep a mix where I have at least one blooming all the time. Works sometimes.
uhhhhh... ok I guess. It's running pretty muddy, but it dropped on wed. and it really hasn't dropped or risen since. So, somethings going on, just not right here. I guess that's good. :-/ I agree. It has been chilly here. But, ohhhh town was sooooo nice today!! Those silly orchids, don't they know that they're supposed to bloom when you want them too :-p
Yeah we're muddy too. It did drop a couple of feet, but it's staying there so I agree something is going on somewhere. I can see frost on the garage roof, but still no rain or snow. O.K. by me, I need to get my Christmas decorations down. May have to leave them in the garage a day or so to dry out. I need to clear out my guest bedroom (which is full of stuff I moved to put decorations in the rest of the house) so I can store the stuff from my kitchen cupboards. I'm getting them refaced in about a week and a half. Can't wait, the doors I have are really worn. We made these arrangements months ago and the guy just came and made final measurements. He did several other people we know, so we waited for him to be available. Of course we didn't plan on the stock market taking a nose dive. But we figure it's an investment in the house....makes it sound good anyway.
Good luck with those decorations! You'll have to show us before and after pics of those cupboards. It sounds as if it should be well worth it, even if the timing is not the best. Hopefully he will get it done quickly though, after waiting all this time!
Is there still a thread going for PNWest garden photos? I have a few that I took today. I'm not really sure where to put them.
He's been working on other projects, including one across the street. He does such beautiful work and we know he's reliable, so we didn't care if we had to wait. He's doing most of the work in his shop, so it doesn't take as long at the house. But I have a lot of nooks and crannies (even though we're losing some because it would be too expensive) so we'll see how long it takes. I just have to go find some knobs and my neighbor told me about a place I can get them cheaper.
Other than the one for Hellebores, I haven't seen one. Maybe you should start one. I know on the Orchid forum they start a new one each month.
Hey All I got lost again, story of my life.
What pics Red?
Plus we always love seeing your pics!!
Well, it's good that he's reliable then and worth the wait. That's sometimes hard to come by.
hmm.... I don't know that we really have enough going on right now, other than crappy weather, for a winter photos thread?? If folks want something like a garden photos thread, I'll start one.
For today, here is the place for me :-p I don't have the pics just yet Tilly! In just a minute though. Thanks Sally, you're sweet as always!
