Oh thank you ima, I do have Wyoming there, I like the dark foliage. I was thinking some blue for lower around the front - do you love how specific - ha ha ha.
Help! Why won't my calla lilies bloom...ever?!
I know the feeling exactly...LOL!
The only drawback I see in this combo is cannas need full sun and callas need shade!
thanks for the duh ! lol - it is full full sun. I'm trying to soften around the AC unit, and need more than the cannas. I'm going to Alden Lane this week, I'm sure I'll have no problem :) finding something.
All the callas I bought this year say they will grow in full sun, and my friend in San Jose has hers in full sun....I get hotter temps here than she does, so we'll see. But my old callas that the landscapers ripped out last year (grrr) were in full sun and did beautifully here. But they were small ones, so I don't know if that makes a difference or not. The non-white ones I've put in pots in shadier areas have not done well, and I'm gradually moving the pots to places where they get more sun.....so I dunno!
I think the small ones like sun better than the big ones. I have the big white ones and mine fry in the sun and do great in the shade. No idea what cultivar they are, I got them from a friend who had too many and was giving them away (should have taken that as a warning, but they're so pretty!) I have some that are underneath my front deck and get no direct sunlight at all and they do the best. There are a couple others that get about 2-3 hrs of sun in the morning and they are doing OK but not nearly as well as the ones that have more shade.
In my area if they are in full sun they need lots, lots, lots of water and will do fine, but are more lush and twice the size in the shade and self sufficient. I think the canna calla could work. let those two overenthusiastic plants fight it out.
It is a very hot spot in my garden, but stays semi-moist from the AC - I think I'm going to try to find something that will stay a bit lower than the cannas (to go around the patch of cannas) and really make their foliage POP.... something that likes the same hot/semi-wet condition.
My Hercules is in full sun and I occasionally water it.
Alden Lane is so expensive. Did you know the owner of Alden Lane is married to the owner of Orchards in Lafayette? Which is expensive too. A bit of nursery gossip. LOL
My whites are all over, sadly. But since it is not hot here they do well all over, sadly. Funny I had the spotted one Sue has, actually paid for it and my friend Ada sent me one too and those died over a winter. I can't win.
I wonder if the colored ones will not grow here because it is not warm enough. Like caladiums which I have tried and tried and they do not even send up one leaf.
I took a pic of the white callas taking over as usual. See all the babies. I HATE them. And they are not easy to yank either. I have to dig them out deep which is hard since they are under all my roses.
Kayjones, do yours spread in your zone? Yours is so healthy looking.
Have any of you noticed how diseased the cannas are in all the nurseries. They all have that canna virus. I have been so good about not bringing home any new cannas because I have several large stands that I love and do not want them to get so sick. The virus is so contagious.
Then last year I found a big pot of Australia with the deep almost black leaves. It looked perfect. So I got it. With the stress of moving and hitting a heat wave, the virus within emerged almost immediately with the new leaf. I emailed the grower and they sent someone out to look at their crop. He said he found 1 with it among his. He told me to return the plant to where I bought it. And he even called them for me. I got my $30 back!
I have only had my plant in the ground since Sept., so don't know if it will spread. Before moving to Florida last Sept., I have grown it in a large pot for a number of years.
Kell - glad you got your money back. I had a yellow calla in OR that did well, EXCEPT when it got hot (upper 90's-100) the flower will lean over with fatigue. who knows,
** I left Alden Lane with -0- purchases (WHAT!) everything seemed way expensive, and I was feeling especially thrifty.
Kell,
Here is what I do when I have some unwanted plants that are growing within another good plant and can't dig them out. I paint the leaves of the unwanted plant with Roundup. It will kill the unwanted plant from the roots then you can just pick off the dead foliage. I use an old long handled artist type brush, so I can reach difficult areas and I only use that brush for the RU.
The last time I bought Roundup, I bought the small container of the concentrated stuff. I found that if you use it to paint on the leaves, it works a lot faster too.
Donna
Hi Donna! : )
Hi Roberta :-)))))
Guess what I have germinating right now? The Spanish Flag we talked about. I was going through my seeds last week and found a few left from when I received them last year. I nicked then soaked them in H2o2 and water overnight and they seem to be fertile still, then I planted them and I'm keeping an eye on them closely. Keep your fingers crossed, ok?
Donna
Awesome!
Hi Roberta and Donna:
It's good to hear from you. Sounds like you're both doing well.
Donna, I have an artist brush I keep for the same purpose. You know what they say about great minds?
I can't really remember, but maybe you know.
Hi Randy, good to hear from you too. Yea, if my mind worked all the time, I'd be in BIG trouble. lol
Roberta, I have 3 1/2 seeds sprouting as of this morning on the Spanish Flag...yippee. Their leaves are so different looking than most seedlings. I think I just might have me a nice vine this year. I hope the rest poke their heads out soon also.
Donna the original. lololol
HOORAY ROBERTA!!!!!
They're beautiful.
so pretty, and so are the leaves, I think.
beautiful! success is so sweet when its been a while coming.
