broccoli stem rot

Troutman, NC

fall broccoli started to grow and form heads, then after a week or more of rain, the stems filled with water and rotted. What causes this, and could I have done something to save it?

Thanks,

This sounds like black rot which is one of the worst diseses of broccoli. There are other similar fugal diseases . Some research indicates that organic sources of nitrogen contribute to this disease. There is some indication of resistant cultivars. The causing agents agents do live in the soil, so rotation of crops ( don't plant brassicas in the same place every year) may help.

Thanks so much, I checked out the link, and it seems that Comet was a brand that is susceptible. So...I will buy arcadia seeds this spring. Thanks.
