Seed storage ideas

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Joseph - Each pocket in the plastic trading card page is about 2 1/2 " (wide) x 3 1/2" (tall). The pockets open at the top. Again, there are 9 pockets per page. I store 2 seed packs per pocket for a total of 18 different seed packets per each page. I place each seed packet back to back with the other one so I can see the labels on both the front and the back of each page.

Any seeds that I have a LOT of (mainly my own seeds that I collected from my garden), go in my plastic bins with an index. I haven't put the binder seeds in alphabetically order yet. I probably need to do that for sure. Otherwise I am flipping through pages to try to locate particular seeds. But ... I do tend to plant all the seeds out each Winter and Spring, because most don't stay viable for more than one year. I start doing trades in late Spring and Early Summer and continue to do seed trading from there on out. Winter is a good time for lots of trades here on DG as most of you know! :-)

I like the idea of these pages and could just insert them in the accordion files I already have. Very cool and useful ideas here in this thread!

I was thinking about categorizing my seeds since I have so many kinds.. a to z... hmmm what an idea.. I also like vines, vegetables, herbs, spring flowers, summer flowers, fall flowers, annuals and prenneiels.. that is how I have them sorted right now..I Promise to use the stuff I bought especially for being organized in 2009..I never use all my seeds.. some I had for four years came up just fine this past spring.. I found a small jar of mg seeds from the crowley house.. we moved here to derby 21 years ago... I am going to try them out this spring.. they were in a storage can with some other stuff I decided to tuck away for memories later when we moved.. it is even a baby jar.. must be from Rose when she was a baby... she is 28, now... I bet this Acorn seed is dried up tho.. it rattles LOL

Oh gee, Debra ... I don't feel so bad now. My seed collecting area looks similiar to yours! LOL!

yep thats close to what I was talking about...looks good; as of organizing well it would be tough but a couple wire clothes hangers snipped in half witha central holder would provide access but still alphabetizing could be work depend on if you are as OCD as I am. :)

...and Debra, mine looks like that right? in two rooms though, stuff I have recieved and stuff I am pulling in from the yard and garden...

I used to keep mg seeds in the envelope that it came with and then stapled them so I can't get to them/plant them during winter. But I got lights and talked myself out of it (I lost alot of seeds/plants this way =/ =p).

I use a trolley with plastic drawers (5 drawers). One for mg seeds I have harvested myself...

...one for I. nil and another drawer for I. purpureas....

...one for species, currently sharing the space with my lathyrus collection.

Within each drawer I have dollar store spoon plastic containers for the harvested ones and for pollen storage...and for purpureas and nils are further grouped into other categories - akatsuki series etc and placed into plastic ziplock bags

I think I would like to try the folder idea, it saves space!

Hubby surprised me with this for my birthday a few years ago. It works great, has lots of dividers and I made little index cards to store alphabetically. I keep it on the bottom shelf of my plant stand for easy access all winter long. Every year I say Im gonna wintersow but havent yet. LOL.
I do have a portable greenhouse and a big garden window that I start seeds in. Almost time to do that. hmmmm...think I'll go thru my seed box today!

Great thread!

I always liked this idea, used by a seed bank, but now I think I like the binder or the embroidery box, better.

I love the binder with the card case. I hope I can find those, here.
great ideas!

hi-
They are from the craft store... 99 cents.

I think the fabric is called organza.

It lets the seed heads dry without molding, but it has a tight enough weave, to hold even the tiniest seeds, like poppy seeds.

(Taylor) Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

oops...we posted at the same time,...

Yes, I think I've also seen them at Hobby lobby and other places. They come in all different sizes. I love them.

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

real organza is a silk product used on wedding gown overlay for the skirt
they make amazing drying back since the air can pass but the weave is so tight that the smallest seeds can not escape
wonderfull idea

(Taylor) Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

Well, I don't think these are real organza then, lol...they were pretty inexpensive.

Frank-
I've located the floss a way bags, but cannot seem to find any of the self-adhesive hanging thingys...
can you ask your wife where she got hers?
Thank you

those bags are great for Herb sachets and in a pinch a tea bag.... Great new use~! Love the Shelf system....!

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

I am going to get some the next time I see them

(Taylor) Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

I agree with the sachets...

One year, I had a lavender bush die. I took my clippers out and clipped all the foliage off, and then spread it all out on cookie sheets. I baked it at 150 for an hour. (to instigate the release of the oils)

The whole house smelled great(but made me VERY sleepy!). I let them cool, and then put them in little lavender-colored bags with pretty bead trim. I gave them out as stocking stuffers and everyone seemed to really like them.

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

mmmm lavender love the smell it is like a littel part of heaven

I really like the baseball card pockets too.

How many packs fit in one pocket, I may try that.

Taylor good to see you..

Syurami, I found the seeds...FINALLY! That's one good reason to go to the baseball card pockets for me. I need to downsize!

hi all-
I wanted to add two links on here, thanks to Frank pointing me in the right direction

Both of these sites carry the flossaway bags, & tabs, or you can purchase the whole kit

http://yarntree.com/cross-stitch/
(start looking under the tab: totes & organizers)

http://thestitchnframeshop.com/catalog/index.php
(start looking under gadgets & goodies: This site is less expensive, with the whole kit only $24).

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

dolarama or any dollars store will have storage cases for beads that is what I am using a then I put them in a shoe box so they are in the dark

Lewisville, TX(Zone 7b)

I've been to CCA ( Community Christian Action) in their used goods stoer & found some decent storage containers..only I need them for my crafts first, but I go to CCA about once a month anyway...real cheap!

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

oh I love it Mona.. here in Texas I live in an area that is quiet..yet is a city.. & I hear the Blue Jays these days but we have cardinals all year round here & I love them! We don't have chipmunks here & I don't have squirrels in my area though they are here. What I am amazed at is we have hawks & seasonal birds, ie; hummingbirds. Though I haven't seen a hummer in ages! :0)

Becky, I've put almost four containers into giant notebooks and in the plastic sleeves, just have three more notebooks to do. I can't believe how much nicer they look even though I took them all out of order. But, I can see each one without having to take them out and then put them back in.

Next come the veggies.
