I got some asparagus and strawberry sets for a christmas present. I have raised beds where I would like to put them. We have been having mild weather with spurts of very cold weather. Should I wait until spring to plant, or can I plant them now?
Thanks
Becky
asparagus and strawberry sets in north georgia
Hi Becky,
I'm not too far from you and I have put out Strawberries in December/January for the last couple of years with no problems. I also put in asparagus around this time of the year in 2006. So you should be fine. The only thing you need to watch is you don't want to put them in, water them heavily and then have that water freeze.
I try to wait for when we have one of those periods of 2-3 day or warm, dry weather to set them out. Like we had earlier this week. Gives them a chance to get settled before it gets cold again. The soil temperatures around here are 40 degrees right now and all of the asparagus and most of the strawberry plants will be down in the soil.
Your raised beds probably tend to be warmer during the day but may get a bit colder at night. If the soil is workable at 6 AM it should be fine.
The only thing I'd watch out for is don't put them in if there's going to be a cold snap where it gets down in the teens and stays there for a couple days.
Jeff
