What have you ordered for Spring 2009?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Nice! Can't wait to visit that area. What is the best part of eastern Canada to visit? Trying to think of vacation spots for this year.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

O wow victor that's a tall order as it's all so beautiful. Are you into road tripping? Nova Scotia would be my choice: drive the Cabot Trail via Bed and Breakfasts. Beautiful scenery, wildlife, birds and historic homes to stay in with very interesting owners and guests. Plan to spend some time in Halifax for sure on that trip. Beautiful city, great food, great people. My DH has never been east of Saskatchewan and when I talk about taking him to the east coast it's mindboggling how much I want to show him. Prince Edward Island is a trip in outself and outstanding too.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Thanks! Both are already on my radar.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I personally have never been but DH said Prince Edward Island is astounding!!!!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Thanks, Celeste. It certainly looks beautiful on Anne of Green Gables.

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

Patti, you should post your experience with Hazzard's on Garden Watchdog. That is a terrible way to do business!!!!

I just ordered a catalog from Bluestone, as everyone here has been praising them. Can't wait to get it.

Willie, I would love to get some astilbe seeds myself, but not at that price. Woa!!!!

South Hamilton, MA

Went to Nova Scotia in 2001--had a great time. We were traveling on a tour & stayed at Lord Nelson Inn in Halifax.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

first east coast of canada - PEI is infested with my relatives and is a must see. never been to Nova Scotia.

victor thx for the heads up on FW - i did look at the sizes - it is why i emailed L SS on how big the plants were since the web site only tells pot sizes - FW $ was still 2 - 3x higher. i'm sure they have excellent plants - saving the extra $$ for larger jm's :)

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

If you go to Nova Scotia - definitely make a stop in Annapolis Royal. My DH and I drove up this past summer and stayed in a lovely victorian B&B called "At the Turret". The proprieter and his wife were the friendliest people. He is a retired history prof and we learned a lot about the area. We stopped at quite a few places, but this is the spot we liked the most. Of course, the Rose Garden/horiticultural garden right down the street was a must see! We were there in mid-July and all the roses were still blooming. The lupine was going strong in some spots too. Best restaurant in town is called "Cafe Compose" which is run by a family from Austria - Fantastic! On Saturday mornings there is a Craft Fair/produce market/flea market - you name it - at the center of town. Everyone goes. Also check out the Candlelight Acadian graveyard tour.
:)
Deb

graveyard tour - like a cementary?

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

Yes! The man who leads the tour is of Acadian ancestry and was current head of the historical society. He dresses in Victorian mourning garb and takes you on a tour of the graveyard, pointing out significant graves and the stories that go with them. It was really really cool! Not morbid at all.
And it gets dark really late there in the summer, so we had the moon rising over the water as we walked around with our candle lanterns. Don't forget mosquito spray!

Thanks all! Sorry for hijacking.

Thomaston, CT

Loved PEI when we visited--great bridge over---kids will love that! And my DH loved the mussels! I just ordered a catalog from FW since the posts have been so positive---am serious about a JM. Patti---can't believe your experience! I would NOT have dug up those plants--it was their error. They should have gladly sent replacements. Avant did for me---along with a poem apologizing---I sent one back!

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

robin do some comparison shopping on your jm - prices and sizes vary a lot - i bascially hand wrote an excel sheet with a list of jm's i was interested in with $ and size from FW, RF, WW, FF, Mendocino, Greers, and a new source davidsanmaples. any of these suppliers will have good quality trees. since i had a list of 30 jm's it took some time - and was half the fun - although the final decision was difficult.

Note that last i looked RF still has up it's holiday sale gift certificate - it could save you $$ if you order enough.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Sorry to continue my hijack, but has anyone been to Newfoundland/Labrador? That's another one to consider. Seems PEI and Nova Scotia get good reviews.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Plymouth, MA has graveyard tours, too, as well as Martha's Vineyard.

Karen

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

Sounds cool!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Given by the residents?

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

What, Victor, the graveyard tours?

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

Well, I suppose if you were talented in that way you could "channel" them..?

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

I think the ones in Plymouth are called Dead of Night Ghost Tours. I think they do more than just cemeteries. I think they also visit other sites in town that are rumored to be haunted.

Karen

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes - I meant the residents of the graveyard!

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

my uncle lived in new foundland so I have been there and it is cold even in july the wind never stops and it is a baren rock lol it is amazing for birding, and it has a good selection of small wild flowers and of course the sea food and ocean life just make sure your bring a jacket and long pants lol you will need them

and what is the scoop on hazaard seeds since I was planning on ordering from them

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

I am acadian background on both parents side my mother was a LeBlanc arrived in 1617 and my father a Landry arrived 1603 so I am a real acadian which in the states are know as cajuns lol hahahha what ever that mean today it would be nice if the queen made an appolozy for what happened in the 1700 since we lost most of our family and some went as far as baton rouge and everywhere along the coast between there and nova scotia, but she will not do it saying that a letter sent to the prime minister is as far as she will go.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Thanks Mona. Very interesting about your background.

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

annapolis royal is annapolis valley it use to be apple orchards and now they grow grapes and make some of the best wines in the world won awards and everything you have to check it out

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

LOL! Victor, I think maybe the residents of the graveyard could be giving the tour. I know the people who do the tour in Plymouth have a hearse.

Yes, Mona, that is interesting about your background. The Queen is very stubborn, isn't she.

Karen

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

hahhaha yes she is a tough old bird.

so how is it going karen what are you up to today

I am a real acadian which in the states are know as cajuns

I thought it was Canucks.

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

no canucks are in british columbia

cajuns started with the deportation of the acadians for some reason down in louisiana they started calling them cajuns lol Im not sure why will look into it

and where is your family originally from and what is the last name????

Quebec fathers side. Abernacki mothers side. My skin is dark, never had a sunburn.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

'Cajun' developed as a mispronounced shortened version of Acadian. 'Cadian' became cajun.
