What have you ordered for Spring 2009?
Just got time to read this thread again. What a lot of lovely plants you guys have coming.
I've ordered a lot of shrubs from Bluestone years ago. They are small, but catch up in a couple of years. And they seem to me to do really well, I think because they are planted small and acclimatize well, not suffering from transplant shock.
Pix, Kent Beauty oregano won't be hardy for you. It's not for me, and we're warmer here. However, it makes a really great annual. Blooms and blooms. I just love it, and if it's not too expensive where you can order it from, I really would get it.
This isn't even half of the wish list for this one seed company! .... add these to the listing I posted December 26, above.
So, I broke it up into more affordable sub-orders. These should arrive next week.
I ordered these from Hazzard's Greenhouse Wholesale Seed. Maybe order the rest next month.
Needless to say (once you see the seed numbers) if anyone wants a couple seeds, just let me know!
Filipendula hexapetala (vulgara) 500 seeds
Aster alpinus Beauty Dark Blue 500 seeds
Basil Aroma 2 1,000 seeds
Basil Mammoth 1,000 seeds
Buddleia davidii Butterfly Hybrids 1,000 seeds
Delphinium Pacific Giant Round Table Mix 1,000 seeds
Digitalis purpurea glox. Giant Shirley Mix 5,000 seeds
Heliotrope Marine 1,000 seeds
Gunnera manicata only 100 seeds
Leontopodium alpinum (Edelweiss) 5,000 seeds
Scabiosa caucasica Fama only 50 seeds
Can grow 5 - 8 foot in a single season. In zones 5 and 6 they tend to die back to the ground and then re-grow. Can be mildly invasive with seeding itself in some areas.
We'll find out ... I planted one in the yard this summer, nursery grown, but wanted to start seeding the fields behind my property. Just call me Willie Wild Seed.
Willy,
If you want tons of seeds, my PinkDelight buddleia sets tons of them, and a lot are viable. Let me know if you want some in the late summer.
You are telling me!!! .... My first Wish List was over $200.00, literally millions of seeds!
I am hopeful they are reputable and the seeds will be healthy and viable.
The Garden WatchDog seems to have favorable feedback, too.
I live across the street from Stokes Seeds. I haven't been there, but need to get my butt over there for a look-see. I think they are only mail-order, so I am not sure I can buy from them at the store/warehouse.
The main reason I ordered from Hazzard's was they had THEE best deal on bulk Filipendula hexapetala seeds.
Thanks, Polly ..... I will take you up on that late summer! We'll talk ......
Great, I'd rather they went to tou than in m garden, LOL. Not many varieties reseed for me here. I threw some of those out in the woods, and they are growing all along the pathways, also all along our roadway to our house. They get plowed and that doesn't even bother them, so be sure, be very, very sure.
I have purchased seeds from Stokes for many years. When my daughter went to UB she called to see if she could go there and purchase, and they said no. That was many years ago, though. They said their seeds are kept in a warehouse in Canada.
Oh man - just started looking at my FW catalog and saw three real nice plants in just the first few pages! A dwarf, non-climbing clematis (zone 3!), two terrestrial orchids and a nice Astrantia. This is not going to be easy.
Don't look at more than three pages on any given day, Victor!
what's with this.... on Haazard's ... what's so special about them??
Alternanthera Purple Knight 1,000 seeds $150.00

Without searching the thread, please tell me what company FW is, Victor?
Fairweather Gardens, Polly.
http://fairweathergardens.com/
Thank you. I'll spend some time there I'm sure.
I saw a few like that Allison!! Maybe a misplaced decimal point??
I WAS going to order these

Until I saw the price!!
wow.... I hope that's a misquote
Imagine if you sneeze?
Victor, have you ordered Japanese Maples from FW, and if so, how are they? Seems decent pricing.
Very nice - as is most of what they sell. Never had a single problem with any trees or shrubs. Lost a few perennials, but they were marginal. I ordered from them well over 20 times. I have at least 3 or 4 JM's from them.
I could never pay that much for seeds... I have failures .... can you imagine paying that kid of money and have NOTHING grow
Thanks, Victor! I will give them a try.
I can't imagine needing 2,000 seeds for anything .... but .... then again ..... yay! for guerilla gardening!!
I tried to choose only those whose seeds numbered over 500 for about $5.00.
Except, I splurged on the scabiosa ..... one of grand mom's favorites! $13.00 for 50 seeds.
I haven't got my FW catalog yet, sad.
I had horrible experience with live plants that arrived decidedly less so from Hazzard's, Their name says it all, in my book. They could have cared less about my order as they were so busy printing biblical stuff on the plant labels for my order to notice that they sent it to the wrong person and sent me another person's order. The person who got mine, planted them and at Hazzard's request pulled them out of the ground and repacked them. This happened after I called them to report that I had the wrong order. They paid to have them send them back to me. Of course they arrived dead. I got no replacements nor credit for their error. Just a verbal "blessing" for my effort to repack the wrong order that arrived to me. Their original box was shot so I had to replace that and then stand in a long line to re mail it. Never heard if the ones I shipped back survived. Neve heard back about anything. No Hazzard's ever again for me. Sorry for my rant.
But I am excited to do business with Victor's reference, FW as their packing and plants were excellent. I got a notice that Avant Garden 2009 online catalog is up, so I am heading off to check out their choices for this year. I have had several great orders from them over the last couple of years. I know two exceptional gardeners that use them a lot in the Padanaram / South Dartmouth, Ma area. I keep hoping to visit it in person as well as go to Sylvan's again. Huge nursery. Nice people. Happy hunting all. Patti
wow that's terrible
Glad I ordered seeds only from them, then!! I appreciate your "rant!"
I have to admit I was a bit put off by all the religious verbiage all over their web pages, Patti.
Folk who do things like that strike me as disingenuous ..... but, then again, I am suspicious of just about everything!
We shall see how the seeds produce. All the watchdog reviews were positive.
I have ordered a couple of times from Avant. Nice stuff.
Sounds like maybe they should practice what they preach. Total agree with your rant and was turned off by their site. Don't like people telling me how to think. Must be that New England rebellious streak. Off to check out Avant Garden site. Hope I can be strong and not order more, at least not a lot more.
just hit the submit button on a pretty large order at lazy ss after getting an email back frmo the owner pete with info on the viburnum sizes, he let me know which ones were left overs from last year and larger and which ones were plug's started in sept. bought mostly the older ones.
brandywine
mohawk
mary melton
winterthur
judii
mariesii
rhytidephyllum
deutzia magican
deutsia magician
enkiaythus campanulatus redvien
astoboides tabulars
and i just noticed i missed molleyshroeder - off to add to it.
thinking about planting the viburnum out front under the white pines now that the area gets more sun
nope - didn't order it because they do not have it.
Nice picks, Bill. Have every one of those viburnums! What size are they? Enkianthus is one of my faves.
i know you do they came off my victor list:) Of course i've been researching them for a few months - can't be to sure of a guy who is a mets fan:)
they have the largest selection i have found on the wed. they come in quart containers so i was concerned about size and thinking about just getting them at a nursery at 3 and 4x the cost at lazy ss. they told me the ones last were three ft. and they trimmed them back this fall to fit in the 14" boxes they use. he thought they would be back to 3' by june. two i ordered are just plugs started in sept. judii and rhytidephyllum - and will be about a 18" by the end of the summer - for the price i just decided to get them. they are only $9-$10-$11 each.
Have you checked Fairweather? All my viburnums from them have been great.
yeah i priced them out with RF, FW, Greer's, Sooner and Avant. Lazy ss was by far the best price for the size - and based on the plants i got from them last year i was very happy with the quality. and the shipping on that list is $35.00 which i thought was reasonable.
now to get that pond to complete the mirror image - Hummmmmmmmmmm
Hee hee. The water is very unique.
Not trying to change your mind (you already ordered!), but keep in mind that FW often lists heights instead of pot size. I can tell you from experience that they are large and bushy.
Just found out my bro is getting married so I'm taking a trip to the Vancouver BC this summer. While there I can pick up my 'Orchid Lights' azalea and the fothergillia gardenii 'Blue Shadow" and a looooong list of other things. I will post the final lists once I get them figured. Of course there will be unexpected acquistions for medicinal purposes ( ie MUST have or DIE).
