Plants that attract Birds

Oakland, CA

I have birds that come to my back yard once per year when the leaves fall off a wild grape vine , thus exposing the grapes for easy consumption. I get all kinds of new birds that come to feed on these grapes: Bluebirds, thrushes, starlings, robins, etc. My question is, are there any plants that grow year round that I can plant to attract more birds that aren't particularly attracted to the feeders?

A variety of plants will attract birds to your garden: because birds are looking for food and shelter and nesting sites. You'll need a variety of plants to provide a varied diet throughout the year. A combination of evergreens and deciduous shrubs and trees will do the trick:

Here are a few:
* Deciduous shrubs: Japanese barberry, bayberries, sand cherries, pyracanthas, common buckthorn, raspberries and blackberries, blueberries, viburnums.
* Evergreen shrubs: cotoneasters, Oregon grapes, Chinese holly, Japanese yew.
* Deciduous trees: serviceberries, hickories, flowering dogwood, hawthorns, persimmon, Russian olive, cherries, crab apples, mulberries, oaks.
Evergreen trees: American holly, Eastern red cedar, spruces, pines, Douglas fir, Canada hemlock.
