Microsoft: Big Security Hole in All IE Versions

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

Yep, got rid of Norton a long time ago too after reading up on it, way too many folks and computer gurus were unhappy and recommended other programs.
I use AVG http://free.avg.com/homepage-appf8

Latest news on IE, "Microsoft Patches IE, But Security Issues Remain", make sure to read both pages:
http://www.internetnews.com/webcontent/article.php/3791986/Microsoft+Patches+IE+But+Security+Issues+Remain.htm

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Sue, I just read your page and then went to the Mozilla page it linked too. As I am trying to figure out where to download the Mozilla patch it talked about, I open Mozilla and on its own it tells me it is updating and downloads Mozilla 3.0.5. So my question is, am I now protected?

Also, I use the dreaded AOL. So what does that use? When AOL screws up which is often, then I switch and also open Mozilla to look at whatever AOL is refusing to open. I can also open IE but rarely do since I have been using Mozilla. But does AOL run on one of them? Maybe I need to download the IE patch too?

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

Kell, what page are you referring to? I posted 2 and didn't see any Mozilla page link or mention of a Mozilla patch in either one.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Page 2 of your second link of Internet News, first paragraph has a link when it mentions the 10 patches. Click on "set of 10 patches."

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

Ah, thanks missed that! Yes, if it updated to the latest browser release, it includes the latest patches.

LouC says:

"Go to bookmarks and click for the drop down menu. There is an area that says: From Internet Explorer. I clicked import and all of my favorites were imported. It wasn't automatic for me. Maybe I missed something when I first downloaded and installed."

I dont see this - any other suggestions. Everything for which I had shortcuts on my desktop transferred but I can find my list of favorites - tons of stuff I sure dont want to lose!
Where is it?????????/

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

Click >File>Import.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

OK thanks they saythey are imported but where are they?

Never mind I found them! Im a slow learner!

Anybody give me a suggestion about this? I belong to a website where in order to post pics we have to load them into a photobucket album first. and then copy paste into the post.
Since I switched my browser to FF this afternoon I cannot copy/paste pics - have tried multiple times with no luck. ANy ideas?

I hate IE, but I can't watch free view movies any other way from netflix. I live deep in the woods and they can't get a signal for a dish company. Maybe chrome will allow viewing of netflix? anyone tried?
George

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

I would still keep IE for watching the free Netflix movies until they add another plug-in. Right now they only have Microsoft Silverlight as the program to run the movies.

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

fancyvan, can you copy and paste other things or is it only the picture URL for the Photobucket images?

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

I Googled and seems others also have a problem with the two being combatable.
Here was one suggestion:

Firefox does indeed have optional image blocking built in... It sounds like you may have right-clicked on a photobucket pic and accidentally hit "Block images from photobucket.com" - don't worry, it's a piece of cake to fix:

Just go to Tools -> Options -> Content, and hit the 'Exceptions' button next to the 'Load images automatically' line. You should see photobucket in the list of blocked address - just click it to highlight it then hit the 'Remove Site' button.

and
Look in Tools, Options, and click on security, then exceptions, then try clearing your cache, or look in content, then exceptions, and unblock photobucket.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

I have not tried to copy/past other things.

I did try your first suggestion and will see if that works. Incidentally there was no list of blocked addresses - I had to put in the address of my photobucket account - and of course could not copy/paste - that really makes me grind my teeth when I have to go
and look up and write down an address and then go back and type it in!

Your second suggestion I cant follow - there is nothing there with exceptions except for add ons (which I dont understand)

Edited to add: didnt work!

Thank you, Calif_Sue. I used the import and probably got a lot more than I did just through the bookmarks.

My question: Since I am on Att_Uverse @yahoo, that is where I get my email. I still have to use this to read and send mail. Does that open me up to IE? Sometimes I am just too dense.

Microsoft is still creating a browser? ;-)

Whoda thunkit!

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

fancyvan, perhaps type your problems over in the computer problems and someone there may be better able to direct you. I just do Google searches for stuff and am in no way a computer guru but there are many over there that are.
Add-ons are small but extremely functional software programs that can be used as an extension of a program's original function.

Garland, TX(Zone 8a)

Fancyvan, are you getting the error message that "the Microsoft file picker has suddenly shut down" when you try to right-click on the image?

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

Christi, looks like AT&T Uverse is your service provider and they have an email program. IE is a browser, it's what you use to browse the internet with. I have Google email and so access that email online on my Google home page. You should be able to access anything on the web even your email with any other browser like Firefox, Opera, Chrome etc.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

pbta I dont right click on the picture - there are a number of links under the pic and I use one of those. But you have me thinking - maybe I should just try loading the pic directly from my own files.

Marlton, NJ

So there are patches for IE now to fix this problem?

Can someone please point them out to me? Thank You!:-)

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

You can always go to the Microsoft website for updates and patches, also miatablu posted this link above
http://www.pcworld.com/article/155585/microsoft_issues_emergency_security_patch_for_ie.html

however, as I posted above, these 2 pages claim security issues remain.

Can someone tell me how to get rid of IE. I have a brand new computer, A Dell, and last night, it went through the automatic update thing, and this morning I could not get anything on my computer. No web page, no email? I had to go to the restore program, and get rid of it. Now I want IE off my computer, at least tell me how to stop the automatic updates.
Thanks
Linda Kay

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

Try posting in the Computer Forum Linda, better chance of getting specific answers.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

OK, Thanks

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

My problem fixed - seems to have had nothing to do with FF but with some changes at PB- I just have to copy/paste differently than I had been doing.Initial problem apparently related to Adobe flash player 10 plugin.

Thanks for the warning, Dave. I switched to FF as soon as I saw your post.

Can you please share what you learn about removing IE from your computer!!?? - thanks

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

You don't need to get rid of IE--just having it on your computer isn't going to cause problems as long as you aren't using it to access the internet so it's probably more trouble than it's worth to try and get rid of it.

Phoenix, AZ

Thanks!, ecrane3!

Well, I still have both IE, and Firefox, but I use firefox for my choice of web browsers. . I am still trying to figure out how to fix the adobe flash program. I can't get it to work in firefox, but it does work, when I use IE???
I have chose to not automatically download the updates from microsoft. So I wait for the update to come in, and I choose when to install. If it messes up my computer, I just go to the restore program, and then all it is OK? Wish I knew a lot more about all this stuff, but each time it is a trial and error game!!!

If I go FF, will all my downloaded software come with it? I use Roboform, a password manager. I suppose I'll have to re-assign all of my passwords to get them to pull up in FF? That alone would be a whole day's work. Also, I use Google as my server. Will that come with me in FF?

Martha

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

I don't have Roboform, but I think it's an independent application that should work no matter what browser you are running. I'm not sure what you mean by using Google as your server--if you have things set so that when your browser opens it automatically goes to Google you will probably have to set that up in Firefox, but if what you mean is you go there to get to email, etc then it'll work just fine.

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

I use Google as my home page so perhaps that's what you meant? When you first open your FF browser, just do a Google search and from there you would have to re-log in and then you can set it to be your home page every time you open up FF.

Brandon, MS(Zone 8a)

Sue, Google is not my home page. It is my internet carrier that directs my e-mails to Microsoft Outlook. I can, of course, go to the regular Google site with a toolbar, but I have to use my password to get to my Google account and Personal settings there.

Ecrane3, you guessed right. Roboform is an independent application. It generates and manages my passwords and with a click of a button, directs me to the desired site using the password. It generated passwords to all of my private, secure sites. The passwords are randomly picked and LONG. For instance, I programmed it to take me to Daves Garden, log on with my password, and put me on the Home page, all with the click of a button. I could NEVER remember all of my passwords without writing them down (which I regard a no-no). So I'm very dependent on Roboform. I do have an edit capability to go into Roboform.

In setting up Roboform, I first bring up the logon page (thru IE) to whatever secure site I want. Then I ask Roboform to note the site and generate a password for it. Then I save it. What I want to know is, can Roboform get me to the logon page site I designated when using Fire Fox instead of Internet Explorer?

I think you're just going to have to try and see what happens with Roboform, I suspect it should still recognize your websites since it's an independent application and not an IE plugin sort of thing, but since I don't have it I couldn't tell you for sure. There's nothing to lose by trying, if it doesn't work then you'll have to think about whether you'd rather use IE with all its security issues, or take the time to do your passwords all over again. Hopefully it won't come to that though.

I'm still confused about your thing with Google, as far as I know they are not an internet provider--they have email and things like that, but you still need someone else (frequently someone like your phone company, cable company, etc) to get onto the internet in the first place. But regardless, anything you're doing with Google wouldn't be browser specific so things ought to work fine regardless of what browser you decide to use.

Brandon, MS(Zone 8a)

Right, Ecrane3, Comcast Cable is my internet provider. I am not savvy to computer lingo, so bear with me. I get to my Google account by password.

Google, receives my e-mails and exports them to my 2007 Microsoft Office Outlook which I use the most.

In my Google account, I can create a blog; publish a Microsoft document or any other kind of document on the Web; Picaso Web Albums; UTube; set up my financial portfolio; maps and directions; calendar; Talk; Web history (I love this convenience); and, Alerts (to follow a comprehensive news story, etc., for me).

I also have a Yahoo account, but I don't use it very much.

Does this make sense?

Martha

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

OK, makes sense. Nothing you've mentioned requires IE, so everything should work just fine in Firefox. The only thing you might find is if there are places that remember you so you don't have to log in every time, you may need to log in again when you switch browsers, but all your things should work just fine.

Brandon, MS(Zone 8a)

Thanks ,Ecrane3. You are a big help.

Martha
