I've killed a lot of houseplants in my day. I am trying hard to become the "plant person" I always wanted to be - indoors and out. Last year I aquired a number of house plants. I put them outside in a protected area over the summer and repotted them. They came back into the house in early november. Most are doing fine. I have three Ivy Geraniums that have so many branches with tiny little leaves - the plant dries out really fast. It seems there are too many branches. Is there a way to rejuvanate my geranioums? I got them from a plant exchange and I have no idea how old they are or if that matters. Any suggestions? Thanks much!
Spindly Ivy Geranium
Can you post a picture? Having lots of branches isn't generally a bad thing so I think it would help to see a picture. As far as it drying out very fast, could it maybe be rootbound and need to be repotted?
Being rootbound would be my first guess too. When plants are very rootbound, there isn't enough soil around the roots to hold moisture so they dry out real fast. Try just gently pulling the plant out of it's pot and see what the root system looks like.
Thank you both. I will try to figure out how to post a picture. I have a camera but have never uploaded photos before. I'm sure over Christmas one of my kids can show me how...
I did repot the geranium just before bringing it in for the winter. Maybe it has not yet "spread out" into it's new digs...
I have a lot of problems overwintering geraniums. I always blame it on lack of good light. I do not know if that is the case but as soon as I take the scrawny things that look like they should have gone to the compost pile outdoors in spring they grow like crazy. Keep the slightest bit of green on them and wait patiently for spring. One thing I have seen from years of geranium growing, if there is the slightest bit of green on them then spring is the cure for lack of growth. It seems that even if it is only a bit of green stem it will take off with sunshine.
