This micro mini sinn. didn't make it home with a tag-- will have to e-mail tomorrow to get the name.

HillbillyGran, did you go to Dave's Violets in person to get your plants? If so, that must have been fun.

Jasper, AR(Zone 7a)

Yes I did-- he is open by appt. My DD lives in Springfield--just found out we are expecting another grandbaby-- so will be making more trips in the near future;) Dave is such a nice guy, learned lots while there. I could have spent a LOT of money. He has rooms full of plant stands. I saw some of his gorgeous new sinn. hybrids-- can't wait til he names them and starts selling them!! I got some really cool episcias too-- got Tiger Stripe, Selby's Best, Pixie Dust & Sparkle plenty-- another micro sinn: sp. concinna, also an AV- Ramblin reflection had to make myself stop...

Dave is awesome,i love teasing him ,he is on a nother group i have and we harass each other non stop, lol, consider him one of my best freinds
i should call him more often

I am so excited that Dave is hybridizing the big sinningia speciosas..............

Frederick, MD(Zone 7a)

How nice especially this time of the year. I am happy for you, HGran, but I have to admit being a little envious. Well, maybe more than a little. Having the opportunity to buy in person is the best and no doubt I would have been tempted to buy a lot.
Congratulations on your new grandbaby. Wonderful. The perfect combo visting your new grandchild and having to go to Daves too. I have only talked to Dave on the phone and he is most friendly and talkative.

Jim, I lied to you about the weather. The weather forecast changes hourly. It is not even going to drop down to 58 until 5 in the morning with rain. I am going to sleep with the air conditioning on again.

I have a question for anyone. To give a name to a plant do you have to hybridize or can you grow out a mix of seeds.............find a dynamite looking one and give it a name?

The reason I ask is that Dave's new Dainty Dots looks almost exactly like one I grew from seed last year?

I am really jealous, too, Goldleaf! I would love to shop in person for any gessies.

Jasper, AR(Zone 7a)

I always think of you when I get new episcias Goldleaf--This is my favorite-- Sparkle Plenty--It is only a stolon as Dave just had 1 plant--but should it root & grow-- I'll be sure to send ya some stolons!

I am not sure that Dainty Dots is Daves hybrid. He has Tons of plants-- had a whole row of HCY sinns. He said i can bring my camera when i come back--sure made ya forget the frosty weather seeing all those blooms!!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Dainty Dots was given a name by some hybridizer I am guessing or it could be...........someone will know if a name can be given a seed grown plant. (without being hybridized except times itself)

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

Gail - I would think it would be the same as AV's . . . grow out 3 generations - if all generations are the same, then you can name it. (something like that, anyway!)

Frederick, MD(Zone 7a)

Yes, I do like that episcia SpaRKLE pLENTY. wHATS WRONG WITH THESE LETTERS? cAPS lOCK. tRY AGAIN. There. Grow plenty of those HGran, as I sure would like a stolon of it and please know any I grow, you are welcome. Come on spring! What am I talking about? Winter hasn't even started yet. Is it the 21st or 22nd?

I'm not sure as to the protocol of naming hybrids from seed. If you know the hybridizer, perhaps it would be something like this. I'll use the name Smith as the hybridizer and Jones as the grower. Jones want to name a plant. I think the credit would be Smith/Jones. I have seen that done on violets and other gessies. I have some sinningia seed and do know the hybridizer so if there is anything worth naming, I would credit the hybridizer first and then me.

Odds and ends violet babies....

to name a violet you need the names of both parents and grow it out for 3 generations
on any other gessie, its not the same, you can name soon as its grown from seed
let say you cross spin art (the strep) with its self and get some solids you like
and some fantasys, that are different from the momma plant, you could name all the ones you like, since none of the seedlings are the same genetically as the parent plant
now if you take a species plant say like sinninigia guttata and self it,you cant name the babies as they are genetically the same as the parent plant, now if you cross it with a differnt species or hybrid, then you can name alll the resulting plantlets, at least thats how it was explained to me

by the way Goldleaf was totally right about the seeds,(i wanna see pics )

Jasper, AR(Zone 7a)

I am glad to have this explained better. I do know I bought some Scaggs seed off ebay-- and Sally said if I found any worth naming she would help me. I have seen resulting plants discussed in the GHA publication with the hybridizers name listed as "hybridized by..."

Jasper, AR(Zone 7a)

Episcia "Selby's Best" . I picked this up at Dave's violets on Sat. The lime green foilage is nice-- but THIS is the reason I bought it. The bloom is the size of a silver dollar..

I've heard of Selby's Best but have never seen the blossom...lavender plus so huge. I can see why you bought it Gran.

hg save me a stolen,or remind me to bug david for one

Merry Christmas, everyone!!

I was telling Gail in a dmail the other day, that this picture was more appropriate for Easter (as in resurrection), but a (re)birth would work, too!

Here is the Purple Panda I won at the club raffle two months ago . . .

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

Now, I mean it when I say resurrection, only because this is what the same Purple Panda looked like just a few weeks ago . . . http://davesgarden.com/tools/mail/pmailpic.php?pid=1754501

and THAT is an improvement on how it looked a few weeks prior to that!

I've told some of you I have problems with streps . . . but Gail hasn't given up on me, and I'm glad she hasn't - or I wouldn't have the bloom I have today!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Had to check in as I am cooking in a hurry............so glad you posted but 2:30 in the morning means Santa was working late. Now, all you need is the Orchid Better Gro fertilizer with the first number of 20...........can order on line........from Better Gro...............that will green up and encourage blooms.......

Back to the cornbread right this second!
Love and peace
gail

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

Yes, Santa and his elves were up pretty late . . .

I saw some orchid fertilizer at the hydroponics store. Maybe I'll stop by tomorrow and see what they've got.

Have fun with the cornbread!

You know what my barely older than 2 12 years old DD just did? She came up to me and gave me a BIG bear hug and said "this was the best surprise ever".

I'll have to take a pcture of her with her "famingo" (that's how she says it), on her brand new big girl bed.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

How precious is that word.........called famingo on her new big girl bed! She is the same age as one of my granddaughters and she just got her first big girl's bed.
