Orchid Lace opened yesterday...

(Sorano) Very pale pink blossoms. Heavy netting appears on the upper petal tips. The lower petals and throat are solid rose-orchid lace over pink, with some rose blushing. A touch of maroon marks the throat. Medium green foliage. (AGGS Register)

Andalusia, AL(Zone 8b)

How beautiful they are!!!!

Frederick, MD(Zone 7a)

Thanks, everyone! I can't wait to see more of them, too, and I know I will in the future.

Jim, with your huge collection, it will be so neat when you get your new digital camera and can show us your many and beautiful streps.

I am still experimenting on how I want to grow streps. They are all under lights set at 12 hrs per day. I don't have too many plants and am able to hand water but when the many leaves I have down make plantlets on their own, then I will have to decide on a more mass watering method like wicking or matting and provide a soil medium good for that.

Any input would be appreciated. Also, what types of fertilizers do you strep growers use? Do you fertilize at every watering? Do you foliar feed?

Williston, ND

Ill be looking forward to it too,

JIM

Those pics are wonderful, Goldleaf! I am waiting to hear what people say although I think I am going to start putting in wicks just in case I can't hand water this many streps. I know that the Volkmann's wicking mix kept mine too wet even though I added perlite to it. Not saying another word as I want to hear what others are offering up for advice.

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

I have down allot of streps that Jim sent to me and I have to say more are dieing then are living... I must admist I grow best in water then put up into soil to grow babies.... Now give me an AV leaf and for some reason I can grow them no matter what I do to them....
Susan

I can't seem to hit it happy with them... LOL I am not kidding you the last batch I grew in water and I had like 30 some of them do just great.... I may have lost like 5.... I had beginners luck last year and can't seem to find it again...LOL I am still trying.....
I never thought I would say this but I have money in a cup that I am suppose to buy flowers with and I am afraid because of me having bugs and I don't want again.... Right now I am just happy what is growing.... I am not afraid of cuttings as I can wash them but flowers right now scare the crap out of me.... BUGS again.... NOOOOOOOO
Hugs,
Sue

All my pictures are saving in black and white... I have to find out what happened.... I did an upgrade today it must be that... grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr Some times I hate Vista....
sue

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Did you know that Vista is so unpopular they are coming out with a new version of windows to replace vista?

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

Well that is good to hear for the people who get a new computer but for me it still means I want to kick Bill Gates in the rear.
Susan

South, TX

Thankfully, I got my new laptop right before Vista came along.

Frederick, MD(Zone 7a)

I'll join you in kicking him...if only.

Susan, from what I see of your streps, they are so pretty. That Neil's Strawberry is a winner even in black and white.

What do you feed your plants? Do you ever have problems with the plants looking off color, pale, or yellowish?

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

I use petes 20-20-20 to feed and I have had more burnt leaves then leaves being off color...If I move the lamps up they seem to not like it... If I move low at times the leaves will get brown from the lamps....LOL Let me see if I can show you a pictures I took today of part of a shelf..... I just resized this one ... not the best picture but a picture none the less...LOL

TurtleChi...your streps look wonderful! You have a real nice collection of them.

Do you ever foliar feed them?

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

Leaf, No I do not but if you can wait until I go to the store I will take pictures of my shelfs... I have two very big ones and one tiny one ... I also have allot of Kohleria coming up... Now mind you I do take scissors to them when they get to big... If there is ever something you see and like please let me know as I have put names on some for people... Like I have some Kohleria's that are for Jan... Don't ask me why but mine are coming up better then her pots... Makes no reason or rhyme to me...LOL
Susan

Frederick, MD(Zone 7a)

I would love to see your shelves. Thanks for the offer, Susan. I used to grow many kohlerias but have them whittled down to just a few. I plan to sow some kohleria seed along with some strep and sinningia seed. You know what that means...lots more plants and I only have so much room. So much fun to see what the seedlings will be like though as the plants and blossoms are all surprises.

Here is Azure Giant in first bloom. The color isn't at all correct as the flower is a bright violet and not rose as it appears in the photo. It's not fancy but overall a nice variety with a large blossom size.

Bittersweet has started blooming, too. A coral shade of pink on variegated foliage.
