Driving around town I have seen big areas of Bamboo they seem to be about 10' tall or so and pretty dense. From what I understand can't you pretty much just cut bamboo and throw it in the ground and it will grow? I know Bamboo can be can be very invasive.. but I almost want that. I have a fairly large fenced in area (approx. 40' x 100') where my dogs spend the daytime hours. I have three black labs and they have worn away grass and a lot of the wooded undergrowth of the woody parts of the lot. I thought bamboo would be good to give them shade and that they would love it because they love being in the woods. And it would be a nice screen from the neighbors behind us. Would this be a bad thing to get some of and put in the yard? I am fine if it takes up all of that part of the yard, just as long as its not some crazy weed type thing that will take over the whole neighborhood. Thanks for your help!
Question about bamboo in Virginia
There are clumping bamboos that aren't as much of a problem for spreading but most of them tend to be less hardy so depending on what zone you're in you might not have too many choices. For the running bamboos, you must install a root barrier or else they will take over the neighborhood--even if you don't care what happens in your yard they will also invade the neighbor's yard and I suspect they won't appreciate that!
Yeah I deffinately dont want that... I will try to get a picture of the bamboo around here.. all the ones I see are good size "clumps" doesnt seem to be going into other parts ie when I see it on the edge of the woods its in a 20'x20' section or so. There is a place next to a house and pond that has some and it has not grown out into the surrounding areas. Maybe this is the clumping kind I am not sure.
