Pocket melons

Does anyone know how to tell if they are ripe?

HoneyBee
They get a nice yellow color and smell really good. We call them "plum grannies". After harvesting them, they will smell really good for a week or more, then they start to rot and smell really bad. I lay them outside and let them rot completely away. The seeds are easy to gather after all the pulp has disintegrated.

Calalily,
Don't you ever eat them? I was told they could be eaten.
