Hi,
I recently bought some seeds of: Heart Leaved Paperbark - Melaleuca cordata - Heart Leaf Honey Myrtle (they are known by many different names). I am wondering what is the best method to germinate them and how long it would take?
Thank you
Heart Leaved Paperbark Seeds
I would think Melaleuca seeds would be sown just like any others, except I found this while googling and the very first Melaleuca listed says do not cover the seeds with soil: http://www.rareplants.de/shop/prodtype.asp?strParents=68&CAT_ID=730&numRecordPosition=1 I think I'd try doing some with just a sprinkling of fine soil over top and some with no coverage to see what happens. As for germination, it probably depends on warmth, light, moisture etc.
There's a listing in Plant Files for this plant but, but no photo's and nothing about sowing seeds: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/75485/
This is the same site, rareplants.de and it says that the plants need a well draining soil and prefer dry conditions: http://www.rareplants.de/shop/product.asp?P_ID=8071
I also found this, if you scroll way down to the M's you will find info regarding a few different Melaleuca's: http://www.rareplants.de/shop/uploads/files_versions/Seedlist_www.rareplants.de.pdf
Good luck with your seeds and I will keep my fingers crossed that you will end up with many of these beautiful plants!
Thanks plantladylyn, I'll have a look through all of those links. Some have started to grow; ok they look REALLY pathetic but it is a start :-)
So glad to hear some have germinated for you! I will keep good thoughts that they all do well and you will soon have nice healthy, fat beautiful plants!
There are more than 50 Melaleuca's listed in Plant Files: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/adv_search.php?searcher%5Bcommon%5D=&searcher%5Bfamily%5D=&searcher%5Bgenus%5D=melaleuca&searcher%5Bspecies%5D=&searcher%5Bcultivar%5D=&searcher%5Bhybridizer%5D=&searcher%5Bgrex%5D=&search_prefs%5Bblank_cultivar%5D=&search_prefs%5Bsort_by%5D=rating&images_prefs=both&Search=Search&offset=0
I'll post pictures if they actually grow :-)
