An evergreen shade tree - Zone 9b

I am looking for an evergreen shade tree - the only thing I've found so far is the Southern Magnolia, which I don't consider a real shade tree unless I continually top it to make it spread.

Does anyone have any suggestions? An evergreen shade tree almost seems like a contradiction in terms?

Would a ficus do well where you are? Mine were bought as itty bitty guys last year and are 3 times as big within a year and stay green year round. They don't like to freeze too much and am not sure about your area.
