We are moving to a new house this month, and I would like to dig up and move several of my perennials. I have the following: hydrangea, variegated weigela, coreopsis, aster, Buddleia (butterfly bush), penstemon and a few Hibiscus. Is it safe to dig them up and immediately plant them outside?
Thanks!
Can I move my perennials ?
Not sure what zone you are in, but here in north central Alabama my perennials are going dormant and should be good to go. Just make sure you dig wide and deep enough to keep the roots as whole as possible.
I agree with JulieQ but would also recommend that when you put them in their new home mulch them real well to protect the roots during the cold weather. This is a good time of year to move plants down here in the south.
I have a question for you, are you selling the house you are living in now to move to a new one? If so then did you put in the contract that you wanted to take the plants with you? If not, then you might be ok. If you are renting where you live at the moment, you might want to make sure the landlord will give you permission to do that. These are things you have to consider before removing any plants from a property.
Here in NJ you aren't allowed to remove any plants, shrubs, trees.
flowerjen, is that for home owners or one of the laws? Here you can only move plants if you have it in the contract if your selling the house. If your renting the house, it's a major no.
When selling your home your not allowed to take any plants with you( some kind of crazy real estate law)....I've heard of people digging up their gardens in the middle of the night.
:O flowerjen :O That is too awful IMHO!! Here too you can put into your sales agreement that the sales does not include plants, shrubs, trees etc. you are taking.
Wow, thank goodness you can put it into the contract here that you want what you planted. I left all mine behind because I was starting off fresh. Plus it added to the sale.
Leaving them behind is a good reason to go buy all new stuff though....lol
So true flowerjen but just get so attached. I'd probably bring my bees and birds with me too if I moved LOL.
