I have a Quansan cherry tree that is 5 years old, with a 5 inch diameter trunk. It seems to have some kind of disease. It used to flower beautifully but this and last summer the branches started dying. Half the tree seems to be surviving but the other half isn't. Lots of dead branches. Up the trunk is an aqua colored fungus. It is in full sun and used to be very happy, what is going on? Sorry I don't have a photo.
Quansan cherry tree problem
Unfortunately, there are many different problems that plague cherry relatives, and Kwansans are no exception. It would be almost impossible to diagnose the problem without any pictures, although in the mean time, you could provide us with a little more information. Was your area affected by the east coast drought last year which may have weakened the tree? Do you have a sprinkler that is wetting the bark consistantly? Can you find any pin holes anywhere in the trunk (which would indicate borers)? Are there any wounds bleeding sap?
