Northeast Gardening: Garden Photos - Part 45

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Ditto to what pixie and victor said . LOL
Do love the sugar-dusting effect.

Thomaston, CT

Great pics! I'm just glad we haven't had any snow yet! Hope I can say that in Feb! Went into town tonight to get pizza & forgot my camera---need to post those Christmas lights!

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Wake up, it's spring! In the garden today. Patti

Ngam, that's a great sugar dusting effect. The heuchera is sweet. I always appreciate them even more now than I do in the spring and summer.

Hey Patti.... that's not fair! No teasing now:-p

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

wow patti - someone is a bit confused...

By the way........I have the winning lottery ticket....... Sorry about that!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I think Patti had the blow dryer out there!

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Victor, How did you know that I did buy a new one last week as my old one of some 20 years finally died! What is funny about that primula is that I moved it down to Nantucket from my Vt garden last spring and it didn't do much. I guess it was missing some cold weather or sulking. Patti

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Patti that is a welcome sight. A nice bright bit of color. I heard that the deer population is up out there this year. Are you having any problems with them or are your fences working? They also said it is a worry because of the Lyme tick numbers are very high out there. Another good reason to keep the Bambi crowd away. Thanks for the little glimpse of spring.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Patti, what's the name of that holly you just planted? Too lazy to go back through the threads.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Ngam, Thanks, the hunters are blasting all around me, which is a love hate thing for us. The dogs are freaking out. It is just the start of shot gun season, so next week will be the big blasting. We are heading to Vt.

Deer are everywhere in our unfenced yard, but have been kept out so far in the rest. We need to do some serious fence work with more new posts in the spring, as some of it is seriously sagging on our old make-do posts. We put it up about 6 1/2 years ago. They say that deer are easily re-routed and as they are creatures of habit, I think they now ignore their old paths through the fenced parts. I wish I could say the same for the bunnies. We will be adding a second bunny barrier at the bottom of the deer fence which they can't chew through, or so far it has worked where we put it up last summer. Patti

Victor, it is Ilex x 'Nellie R. Stevens' and is a cross between Ilex aquifolium (English Holly) and Ilex cornuta (Chinese Holly). Patti

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Thanks!

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

If you're thinking of getting Ilex Nellie R stevens, Victor, I think it's a really good one. I don't have one, but I've seen it plenty of times and I always like it.

Patti, How is it that your dogs don't scare the deer off? Or do they just bark and not chase? Usually even just barking will get them to rethink being there.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

I just have one picture to post today. I actually ment to post it about two weeks ago when I took it.

This was the last wildflower (it's an Aster) that had tried to hang on for a few weekds past the others. It made it through several frosts though.

Redchic01, The deer here know the dogs are behind a fence and don't even flinch when they are almost noise to noise. They almost don't pay attention to me when I go screaming out the door at them. If the dogs are loose they will chase them for hours. We did have one breach the fence when we first put it up and the dogs must have really gone nuts as we found it's broken antler and some bloody patches of hide in the yard and could see where they must have cornered it before it leaped out. I know they can easily kill a dog, so I am happy to have them not do more than bark at them. They have gotten a few rabbits and a squirrel, plus voles and moles who have gotten into the fenced part. Patti

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I like that ilex, but it gets way too big. No room for it.

South Hamilton, MA

Patti--forgot which thread we were on talking about burning bush. Here is the site for MA banned plants:www.mass.gov/agr/farmproducts/proposed_prohibited_plant_list_v12-12-05.htm It is 6 pages so we printed off the site for reference. I'm sure that this belongs on the invasive plants forum, but we were discussing it on northeast. Maybe we can get the deer to ear all this stuff. Lucy

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

You have some tenacious deer there Patti. That's to bad. The deer here don't pay much attention to me when I run out yelling at them. But they did scatter for the dog and I never realized how much I took his deer scattering abilities for granted. Strangely enough, they very rarely turn on dogs here. But, I'm certain that would be a different story if the deer didn't have anywhere to run to. My deer to like to "taste test" my euonymus plants. But, they don't usually do more than that, with the exception of my groundcover. Those low growing euonymus haven't grown in 5 years because of those silly deer.

Victor, I can't believe that there's something that you don't have room for. lol Especially given that you have a Dawn Redwood. It won't be anywhere near the size of that thing.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

That's quite a story, Patti.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Maybe I can grow it under the redwood!

You have the bloom again today, Shelly! Please let me know whom you're paying off!

Yeah - 5 in less than 1 month !

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

Lol...go for it Victor, I'd like to see how that situation works out for you! If something could grow well under a redwood, it would be a holly.

I'd like to know whom I'm paying off as well.... I'd like my money back:-p I need to get some more deerspray instead.

I swear by Liquid Fence it also keeps rabbits away too.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

Actually, today's picture is one that I really like. I just think that, that particular box elder has the most unusual blooms blooms that i've seen on a tree.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

It is, indeed, gorgeous!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Very unusual! And gorgeous. You must have a ballot-box stuffer somewhere!

Essex Junction, VT(Zone 4a)

I don't have any pictures to share. We're in that boring time when it is too warm for snow and too cold for growing. I have to admit I have mixed feelings about seeing these zone 7a pictures -- something between: "It's December, things shouldn't be flowering!" and "I'm totally jealous that you have color!" :)

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I'm closer to the first one.

Whats worse is if you look at the US map you can draw a straight line from NH, VT to OR. Now thats not fair they should be in the same darn zone we are in!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

True. And NYC is around the same latitude as Madrid!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Don't feel bad...I feel the same way.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

Thanks Victor and Candyce...I must go find that ballot stuffer. Whose yours Victor?

Sorry Evie and Schicken.... it must be that darn marine air influence. :-p Would it help if I showed you a picture of some of the snow and ice that I had in late April this year?? Granted it's nothing campared to yours, but it's snow and Ice none the less! Keep in mind it's only western Oregon that's all that much warmer from you. Eastern Oregon is anywhere from 2-4 zones colder than I am.

Victor, what do you mean you're close to the first one? Too warm to snow??

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Closer to Eve's first line! I don't have any stuffers - wish I did. I never had a period where I had many photos in just a short time. It does seem to happen regularly though.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Can you even nominate a photo more than once?? I have no idea.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

ohhhh I got it. little slow today. I blame it on saw fumes from cutting wood. Well, honestly, since I have the saw going.... you know how much faster it is to cut back large perennials (i'm talking mainly about my sunflowers and monarda stalks) with a saw??? works great. I just have to go back and pick them up.

I don't know if you can nominate more than once. Give it a shot!

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

redchi you're kidding right? Please stop buzzing your garden. What if you oops?

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

No, I'm not. I know it sounds crazy but I stay out of the areas where there's mixed stuff. The sun flowers are perennial and a mess! Theres just sunflowers and coneflowers there. And running saws is part of my job. This is a little one. The good/bad part is that if I oops, I can only blame myself:-p If anyone else where to do it... I'd probably come undone at the seems! I'll post A before and after later this afternoon

Hopefully this makes you feel better. This was taken in April this year.

Works great on ornamental grasses too!

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

haha....sounds as if you've had experience with this? My childhood neighbors used to "trim" all of their pampass grasses that way.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I haven't, but I know people who have used it. I don't have one.
