Can someone tell me the difference between Chrysanthemum grandiflorum and Chrysanthemum moriflorium? I have one planted in my yard two years ago - "Hannah" - with a nursery tag that said grandiflorum and the Plant Files say moniflorium. Now I have another cultivar, identified at purchase only as a "Football Mum" whose flowers can get very large. I'd like to add it to the plant files, since it's not there, but don't know how to classify it. Picture below. Any words of wisdom?
Chrysanthemum - Garden Mums
Is the word moriflorum or multiflorum?
Grandiflorum: High centered, large boolms or clustered
flowerfantasy...it's neither, it's spelled x morifolium (leaves resembling Morus/mulberry).
Sneirish--I think Chrysanthemum x grandiflorum and Chrysanthemum x morifolium may be synonyms of each other--if you look in Plant Files there are several entries that list both names. As far as your football mum, if it was sold just as a football mum with no cultivar name, it may not be a particular named cultivar--some growers just grow things in assorted colors from seed rather than doing cuttings of a particular cultivar. When they take the trouble to propagate a particular cultivar, they'll often (although not always) advertise that fact by including the name on the tag.
Sorry about the mispelling - and I kept going back to check it to make sure I had it. Hmmm...
But anyway, the cultivar for this mum is "Pat Lehman" - I got it from Gurney's but they are not the only company who has it listed by that name. So I must assume that it is a standardized cultivar, and not just one that Gurney's made up. And they all call it a football mum, apparently from the tradition of wearing a large mum at homecoming football games.
So if I want to add it to the Plant Files, how would you recommend I list it?
Oh, when you said it was just identified only as "football mum" I assumed it didn't come with a cultivar name. I don't know if you've entered things in Plant Files before so if you need more info let me know, but basically you'd put Chrysanthemum in as the genus, leave the species field blank, and put Pat Lehman as the cultivar.
Thanks, I thought I needed to put in the species too. Sorry for the confusion. I meant they did not provide the botanical name, only stating it was a football mum. But did give the cultivar. So I'm off to the Plant Files...
Not all hybrids have a species name--when I googled this one I didn't find a species listed with it anywhere so I suspect it doesn't have one.
WooHoo! Happy to see that another person also has Pink Mums!!!
