Lorraine My first thought is yes you do need the heating mat. It will give you a more even temp which will result in faster rooting. I have found you get a better plant faster than a average plant plus added time on the bench.
I do agree no more black friday. I have had enough, I don't care if they are giving away money. My answer is still no way jose.
Nighty night

Propagation: part III based on my own experience
What about if they are giving away plants? he he. Bet you'd get out then.! lol
LorraineR, just an interesting observation that you are from Gilmer, TX. I have roots in Kelsey and just attended a cousins reunion there a month ago. Lots of great childhood memories from there.
Yes a plant give away would drag me out of my hole... LOL
Bill, I'll have to find a map and look up Kelsey. East Texas is like a world unto itself! lol
Okay Dave, a question.
I've been reading about having airflow in the place you have your plants and germinating seeds, etc. Since I am using a spare bedroom and have lights up, etc., will a ceiling fan turned on low work. I did notice when I walk in there you can kind of tell there's moisture hanging in the air.
Kelsey is 7 miles straight East of Gilmer. Just thought you would have hear of it.
Bill, Lorraine is so buried in plants, I'm surprised she knows she's still in Gilmer!
Some humidity is good for the plants, Lorraine- but I'd be worried about your room.
Sorry Dave haven't got back to you. Have been Ill, spent most of yesterday in ER. No worry I'm Okay.
I think the crystals will help, I hope. My soil around the trees is not a hard clay, Its almost more like a dust, water rolls of of it. I have to make little bowls for it to stay where I want it. I have dug spots and added, planting soil to hold some of the water and have used water bottles with the bottom cut of at a angle with the spout stuck in the ground 3" around the plants.
As for the grass clippings, I do use fresh. But not around the plants, Or against the tree. only in the spaces that are open to keep weeds down and to feed the worms, to help the soil. So to speak. I do not want hurt my trees and I know NOT to put to much on their roots.
Now 2nd Q, Where can get the Crystals?
Tilly:
The crystals can be found at you local garden center or the big box stores. I spotted a crystals co-op a few months back. of course that doesn't help now but it might be worth looking into, or even running a new co-op for the crystals. I would think they can be had in a big quantity for a lot less than the garden centers charge. I will do some looking tomorrow for some sites for you.
Dave
Garyt, thanks for the rose propagating information. I'll save that one. I'm sure you could do that with other plants as well. using a close pin would save a lot of steps in the grafting process.. I'm checking out doing Acer Palmatums this year. Jim
Where you check out doing Acer Palmatums? I am very interested in grafting those too. I collected lots of seed this fall and hope to have reds and greens to experiment with in the Spring.
Bill, I checked out google locally and found a business that does it and sell the rooting stock. but I haven't contacted them yet, I hope they're still in business. several others I checked out wanted a huge price for the rooting stock. I hoping to get it for $1 each. then use my Acers to graft. Jim
Thanks Dave, your a dear.
Now, now, Sheryl!! I found my way into Gilmer yesterday!! Had to have food, so had to go.
Is Kelsey south of Gilmer? Can yuo believe I can't find a stinkin map!!! 7 miles away and I can't find it. What would happen if I had to really go somewhere. I can find my way to California or Tennessee but not to Kelsey.!!!
About my "greenroom" (Most people have green houses, I have a greenroom. Maybe it's cause I keep the door closed. Have a couple cats that luvvvvvv my plants in there. Perfect litter boxes. Things seem to be rooting well, so maybe I haven't screwed up too bad.!
lorraine: I had a cat that was an outsider but came in in the am. on cold spells I would make her stay inside. I finally figuired out that she would not use the litter box unless no other choice was given. she killed a few of my plants fromusing them as a littler box. Its goofy how once a cat has been outside for a few days they refuse to use litter and want only dirt. She was hit by a car. I tried to watch her for a few days but it was obvious that she was in trouble. we had to have her put down. her hind leg was pulverized and she was in great pain. It broke my heart to do it but I know how bad it can be and I did not want her to suffer any more than she had.
Sorry I have been away. I have a bad douse of the creeping crud. Got antibiotics and an xray today so I hope to be well soon. I will be away for a couple of days its grandbabies weekend. I don't feel bad about taking it with me as I got it from them so they should be amune.
Jim I spotted a source for jap maple seedlings for rootstock. I will try to locate it once I am up and moving. I may have some this spring as well. I planted a lot of seeds this fall. I hope to be up and about next week so I can get things researched and have a better source for things.
Dave
Dave, keep me posted and I'll do likewise, I'd like to know the prices of what all the rootstock etc. are selling around the country. Jim
I lost a little kitten last year like that. She got hurt and the vet said she just couldn't ever be ok, so we had to have her put down. Does break your heart.
We made her a little grave and had a funeral service . My little 7 year old grandson was just heart broken. He prayed for her and said "God, please give "Littles" a little boy to play with till I get there" Now, that broke my heart!!
He planted a little catnip plant by the grave. Now the other cats visit.
I've got popcicle sticks stuck in all my plants inside so the cats can't get comfortable to use as a litter box.!!! They sure are mad, but now they are back to the littler box. Except in the "greenroom", too much dirt in there.!
LOL, Lorraine - I'm glad you made it to Gilmer and back safely. I was worried.
Okay, ya'll - no more sad animal stories. I'm a real sucker for happy endings and tear up with those others.... sniff....
LOL, I'm like you. I cried remembering it. Sweet boy. He's all boy, but he's a sucker for animals and he's gonna take care of them if he can.
Where at DAve? You know you can't leave us here alone, we'll get in trouble.!
If there are anymore sad fur babies stories, I don't want to know. Please, have enought of my own. LOL
Want to make NEW PLANTs, Yes Dave where are youuuuuuu.
Come on ladies, it's almost spring. At least down there in Georgia, LOL Got planting to do.
Lorraine, I have to look tomorrow, but I think the only sweet potato plants, Ornamentals, that I have that made it so far are all Blackies and I think you said you have those. I might have some tri-colors come to think of it. I will look tomorrow. I have been away, in the hospital hotel, for a few days so not sure.
I will let you know. Jeanette
Poor Jeanette - I hope there are better things afoot for you!
Dave, maybe we need to start a new thread? Jim
Sheryl you are so funny. LOL, I think Jim wants to go hide from us fools that don't stick to the subject. LOL, just kidding Jim. I told Dave that I had seeds for the Palmatum Verdis, laceleaf maples, but gave them all away without trying them. Now I can't find the website of the fellow I bought them from.
Jeanette
"Propagation 4, based on Dave's experience...."

Where is the new link???
Jeanette
I think we were waiting for Dave to post a new thread.
Anyone heard from him? I hope he's okay.
Nope. Lorraine, go rattle his cage.
Jeanette
