I have recently moved from zone 6 to zone 2 bringing with me a 4 1/2 foot Tibouchina. It was outside all summer, but is now in the sunroom. It is quite spindly, but is still blooming sporadically. Any ideas as to what I should do with it for the winter, cut it down, quit watering or????
Tibouchina
They are evergreen and don't go dormant for the winter, so ideally I'd keep it somewhere that it gets some light, and water it when it needs it, just treat it like a houseplant. No need to cut it down, but if you don't like its shape and wanted to prune it a little to get a better shape you could do that sometime during the winter--I'd probably wait until it stops blooming though so that you can enjoy the blooms for as long as it'll give them to you.
Thanks ecrane3.
Down here in Florida they will get knocked down if we have a hard frost or freeze but come back in spring. They can be pruned to shape if you don't like the spindly look. Some folks like a lush rounded look, some like them to look more like a small tree.
