What in the world! I naturalized these daffodil bulbs last fall. They came up a little early last year and about half froze their buds off because it was still mid-winter when they tried to bloom. NOW, the same bulbs are ALREADY coming up! Crazy things. I wonder if I need to plant them deeper. I went about 6" deep, though.
Can I move them deeper now? Probably not.
Are they too protected?
...Crazy things are driving me crazy.
Crazy, crazy spring bulbs!
I think this problem is just something we have to live with down here in the south because of our crazy weather. Mine do that to me almost every year but I haven't had any bloom during the winter. Hope I don't encounter that problem. So far there's never been any damage to the flowers because of them growing out of season--they always grow and bloom just fine every spring.
I guess I'll just leave them alone then. Rats! Each zone has its issues!
Growing up in Minnesota I miss my lilacs and tulips, but then I am lucky to have the crepe myrtles and such here in Alabama.
We do have lot's of plants that will grow down here that won't grow up in Minnesota so it's a trade-out. You can grow tulips down here though. The will do the same thing as your daffs but they will bloom each spring.
hello
first nice to see nature lover
and about growing bulbs in cold veriety I can suggest " narcissus " thats fantastic in cold weather and you can sow it in deep soil , actuly I havent grown it but dayes ago when I was searching plants I have seen its ID so take more search and one thing more I you dont care watering bulbs in cold weather it make problems for plant in growing and bloming so first try not water them in ultra cold days makes them freez and dont use cold water too in sencetive bulb types and so .............
these dayes in cold winter I have seen Iris which was blooming . you know that sayes this type is well in cold weather
good job ~Hadi
I buried my daffodils, narcissus, about 8 inches deep in the fall. I see them coming up about an inch already. It has been pretty cold, I do wish they would hold off a bit longer!
I was just asking earlier today what to do with mine! lol
My clematis has good buds all over it and my hostas are popping up. *sigh*
I'm in the burbs, just outside Memphis and the weather here is ALWAYS CRAZY! This past weekend it was 64 degrees - starting tomorrow it will be in the teens at night. UGHHHHHH!!!!!
Same thing up here in North east Tenn. All sorts of greenery is coming up, the muscari are about 4" tall, and I've seen new leaves on the Hollyhocks. But tonight it's supposed to be in the teens as well. Hope everything makes it.I'm just covering with a lot of mulch.
Mine look like crap already. The top 2" of each leaf has "freezer burn" haha. No buds yet, I don't think. So at least we may still have some blooms later....
hello every body
first to Julie about the narcissus the deep of sowing is 15 _ 25 CM

I was in the yard this morning and noticed my neighbors daffs have all come up and bloomed! It was 34 degrees here yesterday morning! CRAZINESS! But, they were beautiful to see!
Mine are all up too and we have the possibility of winter weather coming Monday night. I plan to go out this afternoon and cover them all with leaves (which I have in abundance!). They will probably all be just fine and will continue to grow right through the leaves.
my tulips have popped through the ground, it's in the 30's tonight!
I checked to see when I posted this last year and I first posted about my daffodils coming up on November 5 of '08.
Guess what? Today--OCTOBER 10th-- I noticed they are coming up, almost a full month EARLIER even than last year.
ARRRGH!
Only hope is that we have a mild fall and a late freeze. I may have blooms for Thanksgiving. haha
that's funny, JulieQ...decorate the table with Thanksgiving tulips.
