Darren as for your question about lighting...I have use both the florescent 40w cool and HPS (I think 150w) lighting in the past...the florescent works just as well for the most part with out running up the electric bill. I am starting mine out under the fluorescent and will give them some HPS later if I think they need a push of sunlight. Here is a pic of one from year before last under fluorescent light only. If you have a sunny window it's that much better

I am gonna try to combine the two, window and light for fuller warmth...as i like it chilly, lol
but MGs like it temperate. I am using a 40 watt now to try and bring some basil indoor to grow from the garden I dont remember how hardy the Basil is but it spreads like wildfire here due to the sun. So i know the 40...let me show my ignorance with HPS: HighPower?

Very interesting info about the HPS and regular watt bulbs. I don't have any room inside my house to grow MGs. :-( Sure wish I did! But with my longer growing season ... I have nothing really to complain about ...

I don't know if this is an old bloom or a new bloom on Hanafubuki. But it sure is lovely!

Moonflower bloom tonight. I wanted to show my hand in there to give you an idea just how big these babies are! I can't get enough of Moonflower vines! I shall be growing that one on my arbor next year too! That and the Kohkan x LYK looks really nice together. One blooms in the morning, the other at night! :-) I might just grow Moonflowers all over my picket fence and add other flowers in with it. No worry about mixing those seeds up. The Moonflower seeds are large and tan!

Love those Sulphur Butterflies! :-) These nectar plants are not MGs, but still quite beautiful. They are as tall as me. (Over 5' tall!) These pretty orange blooms are Mexican Sunflower (Tithonia rotundifolia).

Becky Lovely pics there.. Love that Moon flower.. the sulphur butterfly is noce too, I have some cool pics of them on plumbago and mgs both, and I love the tithonia, had it all in the back along the dog run and it went crazy! You are so lucky to still have out door blooms.. My lobata got detangled a little tonight, for starts..

Debra - Has your I. lobata bloomed for you yet?

Ronnie - I am sooo hoping I get seeds from that Blizzard cultivar! If I do, I will share with you! ;-)

Debra - I was wondering if you had blooms that you could take a photo of? How lucky you are to get seeds! I so wish mine would produce some seeds! Fortunately, I still have seeds left for next year, so there is always the possibility that I may finally get a vine that does give me some seeds in the Spring ...

Becky this vine was loaded with blooms when Tropicman gave it to me, then it looked like they all died, the seed pods came on rather quietly and quickly just in the past two weeks, .. here is the pic I posted last night.. and I will take a close up of it and post later tonight for you..

Debra - I saw your photo, but forgive as I didn't realize that the vine in your photo was I. lobata. I was thinking it was some other cultivar of MG. WOW! I can see what looks like seed pods on it! That must have been beautiful when in bloom! You really had great success with it!

becky it was huge and in full bloom when i inhereited it.. I had to cut it back to get it downstairs to my basement nursery area.. I didn't save any cuttings from that cutback even tho I had a buch I could have rooted already, my work kept me away too long and they dried up. so tonight I took cuttings, rooting three ways, one in bubbling water, one in spagmum, one in vermiculite and blue aquarium sandpebbles..lol .. we will see..

The Moonflower and some Cypress vines have grown up into that large shrub. They love the cooler weather we are having now.

Debra - I, too, am interested to see what the seed pods look like. That is quite an I. lobata vine you have there. Thanks for sharing photos of the blooms! Very nice, indeed!

gardenpom - I love my white vinyl privacy fence, but I think the chain link probably makes a better structure for MGs and other vines to grow on. All your vines look awesome growing along yours! :-) Don't ya just love those Moonflowers?!!! :-)

My Moonflowers were still in full bloom this morning, too, because of the cool weather! I loved seeing LYK x Fuji no Beni growing and blooming right next to the Moonflower blooms! :-) So pretty!

Becky, again, Great pics with those butterflies...lol I got chewed out this morning by a hummingbird when I went out to water, interruped his breakfast I think! sat on a tre branch and actually gave me a dirty look. I like the structure on the I. Lobata...might try that one next year too. Red is a great color for contrast with all other MGs ~

Darren - I raise and release butterflies! I have an advantage ... lol!

I really like the red to orange to yellow I. lobata MGs. They are so different! The first year I grew them, they grew and spread all over one of my large fence panels. And bloomed like crazy! They were beautiful! But not a single seed pod formed. :-( And I tried growing them last year and they didn't do well at all. I just started seeds at the end of August for the one in my photos! I am wondering if they prefer cooler temps, instead of the sweltering heat of summer here in south Florida. Maybe that is the trick ... but it is still unknown whether I'll get seeds ...

I haven't had much luck finding true red blooming MGs. The I. lobata is the closest to red I've grown. Most of the "reds" are more of a deep pink. I would love to find some seeds for Scarlett O'Hara with the red throats instead of the white throats. None of the commercial seeds I've bought were true to the cultivar. :-(

yes only the Cadinal vine are red as far as I have seen~Yellow is such a frequent color along with orange color for flowering plant in the valley here (that is why I initially started growing morning Glories, to Rebel~!) that liekto look for other colors...red is great as long as its a deep rose color. Trick is finding the ones that don't hate the heat...Plus red is Hummers favorite color I read. I think I forgot that you are a butterfly Raiser~ I must've read it in a post long back as it does sound familar now you say it again~that is great! I just found a cocoon for something(someone) attached to my planting table this morning too. :)
