"Over the Top" weed killer

Clinton, MO

Has anyone used this product? Where can you get it....and does it work? Can you use it around daylilies, iris and hosta? I have read about it in a couple of different articles, but sounds like it is "new". Any input from gardeners would be very helpful.

Thanks!

I haven't used it but I've used another product with the same active ingredient. I don't have any of those plants that you're curious about unfortunately. If you can't find that particular brand, Ortho Grass B Gone and Green Light Grass Killer have the same active ingredient. Here's the product label for the Grass B Gone, it lists specifically plants that won't be harmed, anything else that's not on the list I'd try to avoid getting much on them. Something like this is less likely to harm your other plants than something like Roundup, but unless they guarantee safety on the label I'd be careful how you apply it http://www.scotts.com/smg/products/ortho/weed_killers/weeds_in_patio_and_landscape/pdf/Ortho%20Grass-B-Gon%20Garden%20Grass%20Killer.pdf

Thanks ecrane3.
I will definitely look into this. I have to fight Henbit all year long, even in the winter. One of my garden beds is getting away from me and I want something I can overspray and get a handle on it, without spending hours pulling them by hand.

Again Thanks for your help!

It's not going to work on henbit--it only works on grasses. That's why it's safe to use around many plants since it only kills grass and not broadleaf weeds. So unfortunately for the henbit you're stuck with hand pulling or carefully painting a regular herbicide onto it.

ecrance3- you just burst my bubble!! Wonder what else is out there? I called a nursery up in Kansas City this am and they had the Over the Top spray, but if it has the same ingredients as this Ortho, it may not work for the broadleaf weeds either.

I use Over the Top exclusively for killing sedges and Bermuda grass. has not killed other nearby plants/grasses. Not very easy to find, that's why it may seem like a new product but no; it has been around a little while

I googled it before I responded to your original post and it is the same as the Ortho product, it's designed to work on grasses. Unfortunately there is no product that will work on henbit but not kill your desirable plants. But if you're tired of pulling it up all the time and are willing to take the time to apply weedkiller carefully, there are plenty of things like Roundup that should kill the henbit. You can apply with a paintbrush, or some people wear gloves, dip their fingers in Roundup and then wipe it onto the weeds that way.

vossner this works on bermuda grass? I have been trying so many products trying to kill of the bermuda from around all the beds and get it out of them. I swear the only thing left after a nuclear blast will be cockroaches and bermuda grass!!

I use Green Light grass killer (which has the same active as Over the Top and Ortho Grass B Gone) and it works very well on Bermuda. The two catches with it are 1) it's slow to show results (takes a week or two before you realize it's doing anything) and 2) if you have a lawn full of bermuda, it's not going to stop new stuff from creeping into the beds (but neither will anything else!)

definitely works on B grass but same as what ecrane said. It takes a few days before you notice. I will have to get some Green Light killer and try it out. Over the Top sells out fast or is hard to get.

Where do you get your over the top? I will try the green light too. There was granular stuff called "Control" bermuda grass killer that I loved! Best stuff ever but it is no longer sold.

you can get it here. http://davesgarden.com/products/gwd/c/3704/

I believe they do mail order. randy and I are loyal customers of this place, but randy more loyal 'cause he lives closer.

I would call a couple of your best nurseries and try them first. seems a shame to have to pay postage for this. surely SOMEBODY there carries it. Or maybe Over the Top will tell you of a nearby seller.

I have not found the website for "Over the Top" I did e-mail another place locally to see if they carry it or can get it in for me.

It's made by Fertilome http://www.fertilome.com/ProductDetails.aspx?prod=10454 You may have better luck finding Ortho Grass B Gone, it's a more widely sold brand and the active ingredient is exactly the same as the Green Light and Over the Top.

I have started to use corn gluten for weeds on both the flower beds and the lawn. There is a noticable difference in the numbers of weeds that are coming up. I first applied it last spring and I just applied it again. It works by preventing the weed seeds from germinating. It has certainly worked better than Preen for me. Of course, if you have plants that self sow you would not want to use it.

For Burmuda grass I use Ornamec. It is an "over the top" type product in that it does not hurt most other plants.

Good discussion started here.
I will come back and add: my husband and I have fought Bermuda grass from the neighbors yards for years. Until last year we would just relent and use Roundup and you know what that does - good stuff, but kills everything in it's path. We were talking to a friend of ours who had just gotten back from a trip to California visiting relatives. He was spraying something on his yard he had gotten while out there for Bermuda grass and told us it was called Turflon Ester. He said it really helped with keeping it from spreading, AND it didn't kill the lawn grass. We got some and really like it. However we are finding it does kill the Bermuda grass. Don't know if DH is mixing a little stronger or what..he says not. Anyway he googled and found an on line website for it and was going to order it, but in the meantime found it at Grasspad. He is extremely happy with this product and has been a fanatic about fighting Bermuda for as long as I can remember.

Again, Thanks for all the input on the Over the Top!

I am using ornamec too but find it does not work as well as my old bermuda grass killer. I know that it takes quite a bit longer to see results. I just sprayed some this weekend at a stronger stregnth at the recomendation of a friend . I think I am goign to have to try again when it starts to warm up since it is starting to cool down so much here.
Daylily I am off to look up the stuff you recommended

I found Ornamec to be very slow acting but in the end it did work. Our burmuda grass is so tough it can actually grow through blacktop and herbicides like RoundUp didn't even touch it. The Ornamec worked so well for me I will probably never use up the quart bottle I bought 3 years ago. I only need a few spritzes a year when I see a new shoot coming up. It sounds like the Turflon works in a similar way but it may be faster; I certainly would try that if I didn't have so much Ornamec left.

If you want to get rid of a plant forever and forever - use vinegar. Just make sure it is applied ONLY to the plant you want to kill.

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

Vinegar only kills top growth--so if it's an annual weed then it works great, but if it's a perennial weed most of the time it'll come back.
