Growing Vegetables Indoors

Brookfield, CT(Zone 5b)

How practical is it to try to grow vegetables over the winter in the house? What types would be best to try? What difficulties might I run into that I wouldn't face in the vegetable garden in summer? I already keep many houseplants and tender perennials in the house, and I have developed a regular watering routine. I also make sure all the plants are exposed to adequate light during the day, using gro lights where I have to.

Hmmm, you need pretty big containers for vegetables so that
might be an issue.

I am growing leaf lettuce indoors under a good old fashioned shop light with great results. My wife says the lettuce is sweet and tender. I grow them in coconut coir growing mix.

I was thinking tomatoes and squash! ;-)

Never tried those before.

Lettuce sounds like a good idea. I could definitely try that. How do you think Spinach could work?

I know tomato plants can get really big and I'm not sure I have that much room. Does anyone know of a tomato plant that doesn't get too big? I would love to grow tomatoes. Also, would a tomato plant be dangerous to the dog? She doesn't get into my other plants, but they aren't full of delicious fruits. . .

Spinach probably would work as good as lettuce. I'm going to try some

There is a Patio Tomato that does well in pots. It may be fun to try.

You could probably grow whatever you want. But keep in mind that you would have to hand pollinate those that require pollination.

I'd ask your vet about the dog. I'm guessing the dog won't mess with the tomatoes . . . you could always put up a barrier to keep her out, too.

There are miniature varieties of cherry tomato plants that would be suitable to grow indoors. You can get them for those Aerogarden kits, looks like. Maybe ask in the tomato forum and someone can recommend a variety and source.

Keep us posted on what you do and how it goes!

BocaBob ~ how often do you stagger plantings of your lettuce to get a constant crop to harvest? Did that make sense? LOL

Boca Raton, FL(Zone 10a)

Totally makes sense -Every 3 weeks. Right now my wife every morning goes out and picks her lunch for work. (lettuce, cukes, beans)
