Searching for posts

That wouldn't be a problem, except that while a search is happening, nobody else can pull up a thread or even the DG homepage, until the search is complete. So if a search takes, say, 10 seconds, then during that 10 seconds nobody can load any page on the site that has anything to do with the forums.

ah... i do recall this weeks back... it's like everything came to a standstill.

....like right now... I clicked Send... and it just sat 'spinning' for a minute before i hit cancel.
the other tab i have open for the home page is still "spinning" too.... well into 90 seconds.
which can feel like an eternity.

.... still "spinning" after 3 min. so, something's up since other internet sites are loading.

Thanks so much for the update Dave. I too noticed some timeouts lately. We will just have to be patient until you come up with a viable solution.

Thank you for the update, Dave.

ahh ha....while I really miss the search feature..I use it alot too. At least now I know why I kept getting hung up the last few weeks. Thanks for the explanation Dave.

In searching for words like cucumber beetle larva on corn, is there a way you can just type in {cucumber beetle corn], without getting every article that has each word individually? Thanks
Mike

If you put a plus in front of each word, it forces the search engine to make sure that all the words actually appear. Example:

http://davesgarden.com/sitewidesearch.php?q=%2Bcucumber+%2Bbeetle+%2Bcorn

Argyle, TX(Zone 7b)

I did not see an example with a plus, but I assume like this: +cucumber +beetle +corn? Thanks
Mike

Yes, exactly. Somehow my link didn't come through correctly...

Argyle, TX(Zone 7b)

Thanks Dave. That is good to know.

Dave,

Thank you for the explanation for why this is temporarily suspended. If I could help you to create a second table for the database, I would gladly do it.

Eunice, MO(Zone 5b)

Dave, Thanks for thje explanation. I now understand what the problem is and know that you made the right decision to suspend the search feature. Will continue to miss the feature but understand the necesity of the action.

Also, if you put the search query as +"cucumber beetle" +corn, you'll find pages that have the specific text string cucumber beetle and the word corn.

Argyle, TX(Zone 7b)

Thanks gardenwife. That is good to know. I hope that I do not forget when the search engine is running again.

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

You're welcome! :) This should hold true for whatever search engine you use, be it Google, MSN, Yahoo, Dogpile, etc.

Argyle, TX(Zone 7b)

Did not know that. Thanks

This page at Google talks about advanced search options. It's pretty cool how you can narrow down your searches by many criteria. http://www.google.com/support/bin/static.py?page=searchguides.html&ctx=advanced

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

Yes . . . too bad we can't narrow it down to a specific forum, though.

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Sometimes it helps if you include the specific header information from a thread -- for instance, if I were searching for a thread in this forum, I might try +"Forum: Dave's Garden" because that text string is included at the top of every Dave's Garden thread. For some reason it doesn't always work, but it does a lot of the time.
