Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Double Crust Pastry

In a large mixing bowl, combine 1-1/2 cups flour and 1/2 tsp salt. Cut in 1/2 cup shortening until shortening is the size of peas. In a small bowl, whisk together 1 egg with 2 tsp lemon juice and 1 Tbsp water. Drizzle liquids over the flour mixture. Toss with spatula until pastry holds together and forms a ball. Add more water, 1 Tbsp at a time, IF necessary.

Divide in half for two 9-inch crusts.

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

It's like adding the whipped cream / ice cream on the inside

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

How do you get the cream into the slits without it going all over the rest of the pie?

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Thanks for taking the time to post these, Willie. I think it's time you published a cook book. I have yet to see a recipe of yours that didn't sound wonderful!!

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

I am happy to share the recipes that seem to always get the best reviews. I knew if I wasn't going to get in the "arts" some way, I would probably end up chef-ing or planting.

If you slice the slits well, they spread open JUST enough for you to pour it in .... I use a glass 1 cup pyrex to pour carefully in. Sometimes, if the slit didn't split deeply enough, I use a knife to carefully "open" it a little. Pour in slowly. Gets in just fine.

I usually slice it as for the pieces I want finally (usually for 6 pieces). Leave about 1 inch of circle in the center of pie crust for leaf crust garnish and slice outward until about 1 inch from the edge.

Oh, you're good, Willie. That was a very helpful description. I'm telling you......get working on that cookbook! I'll buy your first edition!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

That pie sounds yummy!

55 here and has been raining/drizzle for the last 24 hours.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Hey, Pixie......what are you up to in the Orient? LOL

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Hi Louise..getting ready for DD's baby shower tomorrow. I need to make a 7-Layer Taco Dip and a batch of fudge. I planted her tulips, daffs and glory of the snows today. She wasn't think just how big she'd be come planting time. Every time she bent over to try to dig or plant a bulb she couldn't breath!! lol She still had 20 lbs of baby fat on her from Orryanna when they told her she was prego again. I believe she'll top the scale at 200!!!!!! So glad she's not a member here....I'd be in deep you know what. hee hee he

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Gathering was great. Met new neighbors.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Rained hard last night, and I remembered during the deluge that I left out my dug cannas all nicely packaged up to be stored for the winter. I will have to now unpack them to dry them out a bit or they will rot. Rot! Dumb! But today appears to be clearing off so I am going to head out soon to finish up the bed cleaning up today, I hope. No frost in site. I have a glads in bloom.

Now Ms. Pixie, do you think that the taco dip and fudge are going to help your DD? Please just send the fudge down here instead. No on second thought, I need to be able to plant my own bulbs unless you want to plant mine too when you bring the fudge. Taxco dip won't travel well. You are so sweet.

WNYwillieB, I have apples from Vt and all the fixing's, plus a funnel. I will post how it comes out. Thanks, Patti

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Sounds like JoAnn had a nice time yesterday and Celeste's is just about to begin! (and sure! blame it on Orryanna ..... awe) :-)

I am not sure Betty Crocker, et al, would be too happy about me publishing my "secret" recipes, Louise!! But, maybe I can make one of those coffee-table books one can create through Apple's iLife's iPhoto's Print Books to give as "Holiday" gifts. Thanks for the idea!

"S" word for tomorrow

Sunrise: 7:00

Edit: We cross-posted, Patti .... Can't wait to hear how you like it. I let the apples sit a little while once I added the dry ingredients, as I thought the apples were on the moist side and wanted to drain off some of the juices ..... We wouldn't want a sloppy pie, now, would we? :-)

Pretty day. 50 and clear.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Whoa, Pixie.......didn't know Orryanna's getting a sibling! My goodness....you will be one busy Grammy! Congrats! Just thinking of that fudge is making me hungry. I've sworn off sugar, so I'll just have to enjoy such treats vicariously. Willie is continually making me hungry too! Things are pretty boring - foodwise - down here in my house.

JoAnn - glad you enjoyed your gathering. It's always fun to meet new neighbors.

Glad you are feeling better, Jan!!

Louise

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Hi Louise, yes Orryanna is going to have a sister, Isabella.
Ory will be one Dec.14th and little sister is due Jan. 23!

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

How exciting, Celeste. I love the name, Isabella. It's hard to believe that Ory's first birthday is here already. I recall clearly when she was born.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

The first, pretty snowfall has come. Perhaps almost 1/2 inch, barely sticking where it's wet. 6 to 9 inches south of here ..... Wonder how Panama fared.

More snow (not much) predicted for today / tonight, but tomorrow's sunshine will melt it all away.

What a beautiful day it was yesterday. Got a good portion of my front yard clean of leaves. They all came down in a matter of two days!!! I still have to tackle the back yard. Really looking forward to that----NOT! Today looks beautiful too! I wouldn't mind another day off.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Hight clouds, patches of blue sky. 53 degrees. Another good day to finish the major bed cleaning. We got tons done yesterday. It is suppose to be cooler, but sunny for the next few days. Perfect bulb planting weather.

I did just happen to order more from the nice sale going on at Eflowergarden in the classifieds. The current list may not be so current as I put some holes in it. Sorry. Bleek (Bert) emailed me right back with what he could ship out today for me.

http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/919535/

I am going to send in an order with Touch of Nature for paperwhites at a great price and a few other things that are also marked down. Got a big box of sale bulbs from VanEngelen last week. I also did a sale order with Bulbmeister for mostly some very unusual species tulips. Most I had never heard of before. Pricey to begin with, so I will have just a few of each.

With the coops closing down, I will be sale hunting more than ever. Though I do always send in some full price orders to my favorite vendors just to keep all these small independents in business or we will be left with nothing but box stores.

Out to do battle and hoping we don't see any white stuff until Dec. We had a daylily in bloom yesterday, Glads too. Patti
