Phyllostachys Nigra Bamboo Advice

Glendale, CA

I purchased a Phyllostachys Nigra(Black Bamboo) plant in a 15 gallon container. I planted it adjacent to a walkway & I'm a bit concerned. Phyllostachys Nigra is a running bamboo but it is said to be slow growing & one of the less invasive varieties of running bamboo.

I was wondering it would be in my best interested to use a root barrier to protect the adjacent walkway, I've been told that the rhizomes of running bamboo are extremely distructive & have been known to buckle sidewalks once the plant is established.

I would like to prevent this from happening. I've attached a photo of where the plant is situated. I'd like some input from people who are familiar with Phyllostachys Nigra.

Oh my ...well yes it can be very very invasive ...mine is in the ground but every Spring I have to chop the new escaped shoots down and pour Roundup into the middle of the shoot within 60 seconds ...this sucks it down and stops that runner in it's tracks. I think you need to get it up and plant it with a barrier of at least a metre deep all around. Good luck ...I love mine but not near any path way.

Ummm I forgot to say ...it isn't slow growing

This summer my brother had to deal with the consequence of planting his black bamboo...he had it for a couple years-not too long. It ran itself from his property all the way to the neighbors lawn. He had to rent a bulldozer and with the help of a lot of burly men had to rip up his ENTIRE lawn (3 ft down) and keep it open all summer before they filled in the mess, just to make sure there were no missed runners. It cost my brother a good $2500 to eradicate the problem. It was the only time we had ever seen him cry.

Yes if you don't jump on those new Spring shoots with the snip and the roundup you lose control I guess ...my bamboo has remained contained in an area of 10ft x 12ft for over 15 years but I have been dilligent in keeping it that way ...black bamboo is generally considered to be a slower grower compared to other kinds ...but you must contain it or stop the new shoots. Sorry about your brothers experience ...what a pity he didn't sell the pieces 120 .00 for a tiny bit here ...it is sold with a plastic container sheet of 3ft depth by law.

I have had a similar problem with trumpet vine. It has become a nightmare for me but I refuse to excavate my lawn because I have so many old gardens. I am very hesitant to treat with chemicals because we have small children. We have shoots (aka;trunks) the length and width of my arm coming up all over the place- uprooting my sidewalk, pushing up through my deck and ripping off my gutters. Its like Jumanji here. Anytime I see trumpet vine for sale I cringe (and curse under my breath). I didn't plant it here, it came with the house! Now they can't seem to be parted! Things like invasive vines and bamboo should really come with a very large warning label. Think of the damage it could cause a whole neighborhood in time, if not kept in check!
