New houseplant ideas

Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom

I'm getting restless and fancy another houseplant. I don't know what to get though. I have plenty of spider plants, dracaena, I've got orchids, an aloe, a couple of succulents, a fittonia and a Christmas cactus (although that is my mam's not mine), we have a garden FULL of fuchsia’s so ideally I wouldn't like a fuchsia. I've had mini roses but they got far too big to quick and are in the garden now and I've had azalea’s (they didn't do so well). I'd like something different.

Ideally I'd like something small, or at least slow growing. Something pretty or interesting. I think pretty would be good here since I think the spiders are interesting, something that lasts a long time, not something that dies after it flowers. I like bonsai but they are a bit too expensive for me at the moment.

I quite like snake plants (but the garden centres generally don't sell small ones) and they aren’t exceptionally pretty but they are interesting.

I quite like palms, I might get one at the weekend anyway since one garden centre had a load of really tiny plants at the moment and I didn’t get one the other week and I’ve been itching too get one for ages.

I’d like something that flowers or at least has nice interesting leaves like the fittonia. I’ve been looking at people’s pictures on here and found one that I like it’s a cordilyne – red sister, and I’d like something along the lines of pretty leaves like that. Does anyone have any recommendations or ideas?

Our garden centres at the moment are full of cyclamen and Christmas cacti so there isn’t much choice. But they do have lots of seeds for other plants.

Sorry for being vague (but I am open to most things)…

Here's a website that might help you get some ideas--I doubt they'd ship plants to you so you wouldn't be able to order from them, but you could still use it for plant ideas and then look for local sources when you know what you want. www.logees.com

How about a few Tillandsias?

Something I've recently found fascinating is Streptocarpus.

I've been a plant shop-a-holic for years, and I have NEVER seen them for sale around here...NEVER! I only heard of their availability here on DG.

Some of the peperomias have interesting leaves and can tolerate the low light of indoors. There are kalanchoes that are grown for their foliage and are good indoor plants also. That's a large family that includes the common type grown for the flowers. They all flower, of course, but on the types I'm talking about the flowers are insignificant. Neither of these is likely to be plagued with common problems encountered growing things indoors UNLESS they are overwatered.
