Mine, too, Crow! I couldn't believe when I looked out and they were all still there! We've had some cold weather lately here....what was your lowest temp in Houston? 45? haha I used to live there for about 15 years...LOVE Houston! Did you REALLY have snow this year?? I saw a bit in Santa Fe during Thanksgiving...but not enough!
Late Fall Blooms
We did for a fact have snow. I couldn't believe it either. It is sure a rare thing. My duaghter is in college in London and when I spoke to her and said it was snowing here, she said it wasn't fair because they'd had none there and they usually do by this time of year. Strange weather this year. Freezing then back to hot. I've had the air conditioning on for the past two days and it's supposed to be freezing again in a couple more days. So far, it hasn't damaged any of my plants other than nipped the tops of a few pentas. Everything else is blooming like crazy.
Crow...what is your daughter studying in LONDON??? How fabulous!!! My son just found out that he has been offered a full scholarship to RIce in Houston for his MBA....so I could be coming to Houston a lot more! haha If my kid were in London, I think I'd want to visit for a month at a time...:-)
Her degree is in drama and media studies. She'll be finished this coming April. That's 2 down 1 left to finish for the kids/college thing. Whew, I'll be glad when that's done. You must have one smart cookie for a son. A full scholarship to Rice is something indeed. You'll have to come visit when you're down here checking on him!
Is everyone else's plants still blooming like crazy? I cannot believe the color in my yard for this time of year.
Not this time. One hard freeze after another has changed everything to brown. 23 degrees this morning and supposed to be the same tomorrow.
A far cry from the heat we endured just before your surgery last year Christi!!
It is just too darned cold!!!!
Sure AJ, go ahead and make us jealous!!!!
Cheer up today is Winter Solstice. From here on the days are getting longer and spring is getting closer.

Well, that is good news !!! Your flowers are beautiful.
Hey Sheila, that was just last August, the 6th for your DH and the 12th for me. 100 everyday for over a month!! But all of the tropicals thrived.
Isn't that the best orange on that susan vine? love it!
There is still alot of stuff blooming here..well until tonight...

The downhill slide is over...brighter and brighter till June! Happy Solstice!
Yes, it is hard to remember it being so hot you could hardly breath the air.
Btw...DH is looking at another back surgery in January, it isn't schelduled yet due to the holidays. Two different vertb. this time.
Sorry about the tropicals down your way Randy. AJ...didn't you just have snow last week??
Yes it is rare down there. I lived in Houston and was there in the 70's went it snowed for the first time in 12 years. Grown-ups were out playing in the snow like kids!
Lucky yours didn't stay too long and kill the plants. My flame vine is black melted mess right now. LOL! But I saved seeds.
AJ: Thanks for posting that bit of cheer for us! Are you new here on DG? If so, you are welcome any time to post away! :-)
No Connie I'm not new. I've been here almost a year.
If you place your cursor over the ID name it gives you the member date/info. You have been around longer than a year AJ! lol! How time flies when we have fun.
We'll I did sign up earlier but I have only been a subscriber since last January. I just got my renewal notice today.
Oh....that makes sense. I forget the date is from registration.
i've been cleaning up the yard since it is so nice and warm and i am off work--what a mess! but i noticed a plant that is growing just like it was summer--it is a little like an asparagus fern--light and soft--or maybe would remind ;you a little of a carrot top--wonder what it is--
It is very spring like here today. My pink Magnolia trees are budding.
Linda ~ could be asparagus fern. They bloom, set seed and freely sprout. They are hardier as far as frost goes too. If it didn't come from a plant of yours, it is possible a bird planted it...
Pink Magnolias ~ how wonderful they are always the first to bloom around here.
well i had an asparagus fern plant clear on the other side of the yard but maybe it got a seed put elsewhere!
Planolinda...Could it be Fennel or Dill?
yes!!! it could be dill!! i did plant dill seeds that i never did see come up--i bet this is the dill!!!!
If so, keep an eye on it in early spring when the Black Swallowtails start laying eggs.
Crow....just read your "remedy" for my Flame Vine which (all 5 plants) NEVER produced a SINGLE bloom all summer. I did fertilize, so I don't know what is wrong. GUess it's not ENOUGH sun. I'll move them somewhere in the spring.
sheila--i got a swallowtail cocoon in the mail and released my butterfly last spring so hopefully i will get more--i know-one butterfly that might have left seems slim chance but still going to try!
