What weird weather we're having #4

Red, I've always gotten along better with my mom than most. We had our teenage issues, but on the other hand she took in my high school boyfriend when his dad disappeared and he was going to have to move to Arizona. We'd been dating for two years at the time, we dated for over five years total, we're still friends, my best friend that I’m not somehow related to is his long time girlfriend and I consider his son my nephew, but how many moms would do that? I will agree that most of our issues stemmed from lack of medication and are almost non-existent now.

Just in general I have a really good relationship with my family. My best friends are my DH, my mother and my brother. I roomed with my brother for four years, we have the same friend group, we went on two trips to the UK together, 35 and 45 days respectively, and he’s 7 1/2 years older than me. You already know about my relationship with my mother, I’m on good terms with dad too, we just don’t have as much in common. Then there is my chosen family, I love my MIL and wish she’d get a new computer and join us on here, she has an account her computer is just slower than mud. My BIL and his girlfriend are great. My only problem with my in-laws is that they live in Port Angeles so we don’t get to see them very often.

Ok, now back to photos…

Here is my Picasa location http://picasaweb.google.com/Zhinu53 I have the pictures sorted into categories, some with repeats. Some of the pictures are just token entries, and I couldn’t even come up with that for bulbs. I thank everyone ahead of time for any help they can give me towards figuring out what to enter; I’ve already changed my mind a half-a-dozen times.

zhinu...I've always been close to my mom too, I moved up here 10 yrs ago to take care of her and dad, lost him 4 yrs ago and we've gotten even closer since then. Of course, since she lives next door, it's easy. LOL

red...I'll have to see what my scanner can do, didn't have a digital camera then. And I still haven't finished the deck, it was too wet and cold to stain the other half today. Besides, I had my tatting class this afternoon and didn't want to miss it. I should be able to get it done tomorrow.

Deer came to visit my apple tree again today, five of them all at once! We were laughing out loud. Couldn't get a picture, someone scared them off. Probably thought they were saving my apples. I have plenty to share.

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

I'm here but have to go back and catch up, lost my server for a while.

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

Red, I would really never do that. Ha Ha
I'll give you a run, but all my pics are from my Cool Pix. Which means you have chance LOL Next year may not.
But you all have great pics, when it comes to the judging and you thought it was hard picking you pics, O'My now it gets hard, Then from what I understand (not sure) we get to judge what month they will go in, so think when you pick your pics, have that in the back of your mind.
Happy hunting LOL

Sally, so sorry you missed that shot, would of been so cool. I don't get them here, I'm in a wetland area and they don't like it. I see them up and down the road. but never here, even the racoons don't like it LOL

Laura what ever you choose they are spectacular. You are gifted in setting up your composition and blessed with the subjects in a world of beauty. Nice!

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

So much photographic talent in the PNW!! I'd love to have some of these framed and mounted on my walls. Nice job, Laura.

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

Thank You Katie!!!! I have been trying to tell Laura that if she would get prints made mounted and framed that she could sell any number of them!!! Maybe hearing it from someone other than MOM will give her a little push!!

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

Oh, and an additional note.....she has any number of photos from her Wngland trips that are even better than these!!!

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

Katie and ZM, I agree with you both!

We are having fantastic fall weather here, the days have been 60-65 and sunny. Unfortunately the nights are cold enough to be knocking off anything that has tried to bloom, but tis the season I guess. Hopefully everyone else is just as lucky. Unfortunately from mid fall through mid spring, the sun is low enough in the sky that I get very little direct sunlight. But, at this point i'm happy for any bright light!

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

The sun is just beginning to break through up here.....sounds like it won't be too bad for the remainder of the week, we got a little rain last night......I think I may have to break down and pick the last of the tomatoes and bring them in soon....the cactus needs to be moved under cover and need to think about putting the fuschias and geraniums to bed, but they still have such pretty blooms.:(

(Judi)Portland, OR

All of the photos you guys post are really great....but my favorite is the one Redchic posted on this string on September 7. It was of a dahlia and for some reason that photo just calls to me. You should enter that one as well.
The days here have been sunny and beautiful but the nights are really chilly. I have been sick with a bad cold/flu bug of some sort and spend time sitting in the sun or by the fireplace. It is actually nice to have forced "down time" and to relax after the whirlwind of renovation and moving. What a glorious fall this has been! I've been watching two squirrels in my birch tree that are cleaning off large nuts or seeds to store - they are very methodical as they rotate the nut in their front paws and clean it with their teeth. They are very busy little creatures.

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

I liked that one also.....
Sorry you haven't been feeling well.....I love to watch squirrels.....we have a family here and are on a deadend street so they are relatively safe from traffic at least. There is one lot in back of us that is all trees, berry brambles, holly etc. I hate the stuff growing into my yard and garden but I do love the fact that we still have that one little oasis for wildlife in the neighborhood.

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Portland - so sorry you've been ill. I hope you're back to your old self soon.

I have been inside at the office during the day and it's dark now by the time I get home. Not looking forward to winter.

But, it sounds like the weekend will be lovely and that's tonic enough for me.

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

I had a lady that wanted to give me a smile at the farmers market today....and he did make me smile....!!! So I thought I would pass along the smiles....

Portland...hope you're feeling better. Be sure to take enough 'downtime' so you don't get a relapse!

zhinusmom...I'm smiling too! LOL

Finished staining today, but we decided it needs another coat. That should go easy, the wood just soaks it up differently, tried a second coat on the steps and it evened things out nicely. Ended up with a light spot around every knothole, really strange looking.

It was another great fall day. Started to get really cool late in the afternoon, then got warmer. Just like what happened at redchic's a while back. Strange.

Sally I think that your place is just barely out of view in this picture, but I just had to try! Just kidding, but I did think about approximately where you might be in the view of this picture. I think that had I not cropped it, the vicinity of pisgah was in photo before hand.

A sunny day in Sitka. You are lucky Red to have a beautiful fall. I am coming home today to see the beauties of a Montana fall/winter. Snow tonight?

That's in the right direction anyway! Another good picture. I'm going to get out with my camera one of these days. Just too busy right now.

Too cool to finish staining today, stayed foggy too late. So we went in town and ran some errands. Should be better tomorrow. They say the sun will be out earlier.

Katie, if you’re serious let me know and we might be able to work something out.

(Judi)Portland, OR

Zhinu, I love your photo of the blue hydrangea - such a beautiful color!

Thanks for all the good thoughts regarding my being sick - I think I will be fine by Monday!

Wilsonville, OR(Zone 8b)

Where is the photo contest listed? Or is it over?

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

Here is the entry page for the photo contest, closes for entries 10/31 http://davesgarden.com/contest/2008/

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

Portland, I'm glad that you thinking you're nearly over it all. That's good. and just in time to enjoy some of the weather.

For the photo contest... the deadline is the 31th for getting photo's in? I was thinking it was the 2nd or 3rd. Glad you said something zhinu!!

I think that this fall has produced some of the best fall colors I've seen in many, many years for here. Has anyone else noticed that? Maybe there's something to be said for the strange weather? :-p

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

Hey Portland, sorry you have been sick, Get better. Hugs

Hey Red, I have also notice the colors are more redder this year even here. Hows the contest picking going?

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

ummm.... Ok I guess. Basically, i'm pretty much going by a conglomeration of people's picks. It's actually sort of fun to see what appeals to different folks.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

How about for you Tilly?

I actually think that these are some of the best colors that I ever remember.

Here's a few pics from a display garden/park near where I work. Taken today.

Lovely colors!! I would hate to be the person who has to judge the photo contest. Soooo many good pictures are being entered. If our weird weather is causing the vivid colors this year, it's about time something good came out of it. LOL

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

I agree whole heartedly!!!

Even here in the city the colors are striking. Fall is my favorite time of the year anyway, and this fall has been spectacular. I love the leaves all over the ground and really don't want to rake them up! My bedroom is at an upstairs back corner of this old house and I am lucky to have four windows that look out on trees. I only need to cover the bottom halves of the windows so every morning I wake to the lovely colors from two directions.
I finally found my camera among the moving boxes that still are not unpacked but I can't find the battery charger. That will be one of my chores today.

Carnation, WA(Zone 7b)

Oooooh Red, I love #3. I thought this color display was fairly normal for this area. Guess I've got lots to learn about the PNW. The weather has been an adjustment but a glorious fall with plenty of outside workdays, my kind of thing. I love the photos everyone has posted, wish I had more time to think about photos - perhaps next year when we're a bit more settled.

Thanks for sharing.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

Thanks Ladybug.... happy to have you here! Where are you from and how long have you been here? I don't know that the colors are all that different. But, many years it seems as though all the big leaf maples just turn plain yeloow and then brown, sometimes the dogwoods aren't that bright either. This year it really looks to me as if the big leaf maples are a brighter yeloow than usual without as much brown, and here the dogwoods are turning as red as japanese maples.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

Portland, I'm glad that you found your camera! I'm looking forward to seeing what you've been doing on your place!

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

I think the colors are much more vivid this year than in the past.....I can't explain it other than our weird weather.......I wish I had done a progression series of this tree. It started with one branch turning red....the rest of the tree was green.....it slowly turned all red but the one branch was much brighter...and this is what it looks like today!

Beautiful fall colors ladies. Thanks.

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

Red, I could be wrong. I’d check the date if I were you.

Btw, I added a couple more pictures in Fruits and vegetables and made them the largest size available. http://picasaweb.google.com/home

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

I've noticed all the red, too.

I think the extra red in the trees this year is because it's been dry and sunny, which has allowed the sugars in the leaves to develop (sort of like what fruit needs to ripen).

Carnation, WA(Zone 7b)

Red - I'm a recent transplant from Charlotte, NC via DC via Detroit, MI. We arrived just before the start of school with our crew. Slightly misinformed about your weather and climate - somehow thought this was 8a. We came from 7a so we were thinking a bit warmer but less extreme temps (ha). It doesn't get as hot for as long, but it sure does get colder quicker. Not as much red in the colors as I'd have thought but beautiful against the tall, lush green backdrop. Snowcapped mountains in the background make it look like a postcard.
