Aralea Polyscias or Commonly called "Fabian Cane"

Ottawa, Canada

My dog ate a few leaves off of my Aralia Polyscias. He threw up but I dont know how much he actually ingested. Is the plant poisonous if eaten?

dudleybud: The Aralia polyscias is mildly toxic according to this site. Scroll down to your plant and you can read what it says: http://www.plantsciences.ucdavis.edu/ce/king/poisplant/tox-com.htm

There are many, many plants that can cause stomach upset for pets and some that are actually very dangerous if a pet ingests them. How long ago did your dog eat the leaves? Is he showing any other adverse effects since he threw up? I would watch him closely in the next 30 to 60 minutes (if it just happened) and if he seems lethargic or continues to vomit, I would advise getting him to the vet.

We have four cats in our household and two of them seem to like certain plants. One goes after African Violet leaves, the other grazes on most anything, thinking my hundreds of plants are her private salad bar! I have to watch her like a hawk. I buy catnip plants and cat grass when I can find it to sway them away from my plants.

I know dogs like to eat grass at times, I don't know if it means there's something missing from their diet, maybe you can ask the vet if there is some sort of greens you could feed your pup ... maybe lettuce, spinach or something like that. But, then again ... if you begin to feed those things and run out, he may start chewing on any plants in sight. I guess it's better to just try and train them by refocusing their attentions elsewhere.

Hope your dog is okay!

Oh, I forgot to say too ... I have heard it really depends on the size/weight of the animal and how much they ingest of a toxic plant. I've always heard that the Christmas Poinsettia's are very poisonous to animals. Many years ago I knew someone who raised St. Bernard dogs ... very large dogs! One holiday season one of their adult dogs ate some Poinsettia plants and got very sick. He threw up a lot and they rushed him to the vet but he was fine. The Vet said if it had been a small breed dog who had eaten that much, the toxins might have killed him but their large dog was okay.

I have a friend who's grand dog (a little miniature rat terrier) ate a bunch of chocolate from an easter basket one year ... candy, wrappers and all ... he got very sick but luckily was okay. I guess we have to realize our pets are sorta like human toddlers ... gotta keep a lot of things out of their reach!

I really got a chuckle out of that Plantlady. My beloved dog,who had to be put down at 18 1/2 years, loved chocolate.I came home one year on Dec. 23rd and found a small, maybe 8 piece, wrapped and bowed box,in the middle of the living room floor, perfectly unwrapped, nothing torn, and totally empty.
I will never know how he got it out from behind a wide 8 foot decorated tree against the back wall and did not tip over the tree, break any ornaments or damage a single package. Thanks for the memory!!
Oh,he didn't even get sick ^_^
