I was able to get close to a ruffed grouse the other day. First he was above me in a tree.

Then he came down to earth and wandered around muttering to himself.

I'd love to see one too! What GORGEOUS pictures. I love the one where he's looking down at you!

Cramlington, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

What an impressive start to the new thread! That grouse is adorable and I love to see geese flying over.

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

What a wonderful start Bebop...I would also love to see a Grouse someday! You have great detail in your pics!

PERTH, Australia

Beautiful clear shots bebop. What a lovely bird. There's a real poignancy about migrating birds and your shot of the Canada Geese evokes that sense of passing so well.

South Hamilton, MA

I have never seen a grouse, but have heard them drumming (at 4 in the morning). They do get up early.

Wow, great pics everyone. I've been seeing the geese flying over too. Although it seems they are flying in the wrong direction sometimes.

I've got to get busy taking some pictures so I can contribute to this thread!

Linthicum Heights, MD(Zone 7a)

Nice Ruffed Grouse (Pennsylvania state bird), Bepop.

Also, nice photos of the Yellow Warbler bathing, nanny_56.

Here's a photo of an Eastern Bluebird basking in the early morning sunlight.

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

rntx22, I have no idea ...it is a tree and that is all I know! lol

I am no good at ID'ing trees and wild plants!

Florence, MS(Zone 8b)

I went to the swamp today to try to find some birds. There were only a few. The Purple Gallinules have already left. One of the news crews reported last night that the White Pelicans were here but I drove all the way around the big water and they were no where to be found. I wonder if the helicoptor downwash disturbed them and made them move on south. They will be back through in earty spring. The birds I did find were all solitary like this Moorhen.

I wonder if this Great Blue Heron realizes the beauty that surrounds him everyday.
The lotus have done their thing for the year and have left only a few dead pads and dried seed pods. The summer wildflowers have given their places to the fall ones. A few of the leaves are beginning to change. All was peaceful and still today.

Nice pics Frank! Sorry you missed the pelicans.

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

Frank...I had the same thing happen this weekend...the many Pelicans from a previous outing had shrunk in numbers to a handful. But you certainly had beautiful scenery...very nics shots!

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

The Carolina Wren is a regular now and hops all around the house and inspects every little crack and crevice! They are a very curious little bird!

too darn cute!
saw my first junco today

Essex Junction, VT(Zone 4a)

bebop2 - nice pix! Glad it let you get so close. I saw one our second winter here, it had been particularly cold and it ate the burning bush berries over the course of a couple days. Such a treat. Never came back though :(

linthicum - your patience paid off! Nice shot

dellrose - such a cutie!

The yellow flying piggies (aka goldfinches) have begun their annual "campout" at my place. They stay all day in flocks and sit and eat. Some wait in the trees for their turn. the chickadees sometimes look confused when they pop in, "these goldfinches are hogging all the food!" :)

And the juncos are around. I always wonder what they eat all winter, esp when the ground is covered with snow. I wish I could feed them!
