Setting out English Dogwood

Maben, MS

I live in Maben, Mississippi, Oktibbeha county, and have a good size English Dogwood.
I have several coming up around it, and would like to dig some of them up, and set them in other spots in my yard.
when is the best time to do this? Thanks

For any type of tree, I prefer to wait until they are completely dormant before moving them to a new spot. I'm sure you probably know that down here in the south, that will be sometime in December. Also be sure to mulch them well to protect their roots. I always add a little Miracle Grow Quick Start to help them begin producing new roots.

Hi Wharpole, you dont say which type of English Dogwoor (Cornus) you have growing, If it is the ones that has the coloured stems, called Cornus Alba Swida, then these are best planted out September-November, these do have suckering roots that throw out new plants, they need a good bit of sun to rippen the woody stems/branches to get them to colour up for spring before the foliage arrives, when here in UK the branches are bare, you can cut the stems back in early spring (March/April) to get the plant to send out new coloured branches if this it the part of the shrubs that you are attracted to, but if this is not the kind of Dogwood you have, then get back to us and we could help you further as some like a damper soil than others. good luck. I had an English Dogwood, It came with the house we bought so I don't know what kind. Unfortunately my father in law decided while we were stationed in Japan to chop it down. I could have killed him! It had beautiful white flowers. I have a Yesturday today and tomorrow bush that was right next to it and I have foliage that I don't know what it is. It seems to run under ground. could this be the Dogwood trying to come back and if so can I pot some up and see what grows?
