fall cleanup and winter storage questions

Plymouth, MA

I just dug up my canna and rinsed off the roots so I can store them for the winter. Also in the container was a beautiful burgandy potato vine and it seems to have grown what resembles a potato. Can these be stored for the winter and if so how?

Store your cannas in a cool dark location that doesn't freeze.
Put them in a cardbord box or paper bags, (don't use plastic)

I have an unheated crawl space that I store mine in.
Check them every 3-4 weeks for soft spots, if ypu find any discard it.

As for the potato vine, I tried starting some from the tuber but didn't have any luck. If you want to try store it along with the cannas.

Check the Propagation forum. There is a long thread on ornamental sweet potatoes. Apparently some people have had good luck getting new plants from the tubers.

You really should check out the long thread on growing "slips" from a s. potato tuber. People get hundreds of "slips" from one tuber. Store the tuber for now in a moderately cool place; you can, following the instructions, start your little plants in late winter and pot them up in anticipation of planting them as soon as the soil warms up outside.
