Does anyone have any ideas about the best soil mixture for planting peony trees? I know they require excellent drainage. I have read about a potting mix made by Scott's-Supersoil. It is not available in my area. I plan to put it into a root control bag for now and sink it into the ground (we are hoping to sell our house in the spring and I want to take it with me). All the quality mixes I find are peat moss based and I don't see how this could be good since peony trees like an alkaline soil. I have coarse grit sand to use but wondering if anyone has any better suggstions. Thanks.
Planting a peony tree
I posted a thread not that long ago about tree peonies (I bought seven, which I planted in pots!) You can check the advice out on these links. I have read much about them since I posted my thread and have found some conflicting info, unfortunately. Still, try these websites and note was IS consistent;

As you said, tree peonies need good drainage, lots of organic amendments and keep the soil loose. I personally used a simple manure/humus mix and Scott's topsoil with added peat. I mixed these together and used that for it. There is so much organic attributes to the manure/humus it makes the soil very light and airy but gives the nutrients. You don't need to get fancy with the soil. You can add some ash or lime to the soil, if you choose but be careful with the amounts. Actually, tree peonies can tolerate some acid but people try to keep the soil more alkaline like the soil in Japan and China, where they come from. Since you are adding store bought soil etc, you probably don't need to amend it with lime or anything. More important with tree peonies is how DEEP you plant them, (considering the joint/bud union). That is very important for them to thrive. Hope the sites help! -Brit
Thanks for the advice britbrighton. I have checked out the sites you recommended and come up with some pretty good ideas. I was trying to be overly careful with everything because I love this peony tree and really don't want to mess it up. Good luck with yours and thanks again.
Your welcome! If something happens to yours you can try www.springhillnursery.com. They have awesome prices, sales all the time and a LIFETIME guarantee. Last year I bought a tree peony at a regular nursery-not too impressive-maybe one dry-looking leaf bud. Spring Hill's were soooooooo healthy and had many lively-looking pink buds on each treeroot. They also have a nice variety of different colors. Their Kinkaku Imperial is so pretty on the site (of course mine hasn't bloomed yet!) but it will have yellow crepe-paper blooms with orange fringe. Its a great company..
