Well, I have this container on the back porch and sometime I forget about it. Look what I found today!
And this was at my mailbox this morning. More white and bigger blooms than the ones I've had in the past.
It's a hige! that's beautiful Nicole!

Eliz, no babying. It's outback under the eave of the house. I notice it has not
made even one seed pod. If it had, I would carry it down to the g house for
protection. Getting down to the 40's tonight. On my way out to carry more
tropicals to the g house.
Thanks, evr. I vaguely remembered putting the germinated seeds in. Seems like earlier this summer. I'll have to go back and look at my seeds collection.
Edited to say - the "shredded" MG is a 'Sunrise Serenade'.
Does anyone on this forum have this? Does it only bloom in the fall? I wanted to know to determine what to plant on my pergola next year. I would love to plant this if it blooms during the spring or summer too.

LilliMerci - I grew Sunrise Serenade last year and it bloomed all summer and fall. I also fertilized the heck out of it! Awesome photos!
Jackie - I love Setosa and should've grown it this year. So many morning glories ... such limited space ...
Here is my Flying Saucers from American Seed Company ... Doesn't look like FS??? well ... maybe it's because it is Blue Star! I knew it! I just had the feeling that I got duped on those seeds!
But I will say that the blooms are very pretty!!!

I think it is a 'split petal' but not a hige or shredded...nor do I think it is "Sunrise Serenade"(which is more of a darker color) but I do like it enough to be interested in some seeds...

yes,basically it is a question of degree of splitting...the term hige actually refers to a beard
...shredded is just that usually very (!) shredded could be a type of hige...

Thank you Becky for that info on SS. I haven't gotten any seeds off my FS. If you find some, LMK. I'm sure one of the nursery will be carrying some seeds in the spring. I don't get a lot of blooms on my FS.

I will look through my MG seeds and see what I have. I try to be good about recording my seeds that I receive and that is what my computer record is showing. I'll get back with you on those seeds Ron. I don't think I've germinated them all. Usually, I keep 2 or 3 seeds left - just in case something happened. Worst case screnario, may be I will get seeds on this plant. I have about 3-4 mor buds. Should I try to hand pollinate them? What will I need to do?

Your Shiro Muraski Shibori Kongo made up for NOT having Flying Saucer. Oh, darn. I forgot to do that head swaying thing with the Flying Saucer today! LOL!

Most I. purpurea have the smaller sized blooms. I would hand-pollinate your split petal beauty. I got a lot of seeds from my Sunrise Serenade ... or whatever it was. Here is a photo of one from last year that was a triple petal variety of some sort.

That is what interests me,seeds from *that* particular plant,because whatever other seeds you have may not have the characteristics that I see and like...

make sure the flowers are pollinated by pollen from itself i.e., the same plant...push the anthers against the stigma so that you can see some of the pollen sticking to the stigma...alternatively try using a natural hair brush to transfer any pollen...

Becky, that is a Flying Saucer that just bloomed this morning. Here is another photo of Flying Saucer that bloomed a few weeks ago.
Earlier today, I read the plantfile on Sunrise Serenade and it said that the first few blooms may be single petals instead of double or triple.
OK. Ron. Thanks for that info. I'll let you know if I get seeds after hand pollinating.

I usually get some solid blooms on my higes and split petal vines. I believe that is quite common. Yours looks a little like Crimson Rambler that became a split petal. Nice!!!

somewhere in the links you mention hige can skip generations.... is this due to transposons (been reading about shibori) and what's a transposon anyway?

The degree of splitting,shape of the resultant petals and partial and / or full doubling or tripling of petals...there is apparently some connection with producing double and triple petals in the Ipomoea purpurea which is different than the genes responsible for doubling in Ipomoea nil...

I planted some seeds in pots along my privacy fence and looks like one of them made it ... for now. It looks like Cocoa Chocolate. (I don't know if it's a 2nd generation seed or if I got it from someone.) But it produced 2 blooms today with lots of pollen, sooooo ...
I was able to use the pollen from the CC to hopefully fertilize the Chocolate Blizzard blooms (that aren't producing pollen). This may work out very nicely! I also cross pollinated the Chocolate Blizzard with white Kawaii pollen. Either cross might produce something really nice. I really find the chocolate blizzard very desirable! So I hope to finally get some seed pods from these crosses. (Fingers crossed! lol)
I got this pale chocolate blizzard bloom today! This vine is such a beauty that I want to grow it again. Another one of my favorites. I have no idea where the original seed came from. I had grown out Purple Blizzard last year and the seed came from that vine. Must have crossed with Chocolate something or other ...
Dai produced this beautiful bloom today. Another one I am trying to pollinate with itself. This photo makes the blooms look large, but they are in fact small blooms. So unusual with the outtie! Love it!
Hannafubuki is growing another vine limb from the bottom of the trunk. It seems like everytime a first bloom on each limb shows up, it always looks like this for the first bloom or two. Really pretty. And of course I tried to pollinate it with itself.
I really like this one. This is Lady Yaguruma's Kaleidoscope X Kohkan. The blooms are bigger than LYK but smaller than those dessert plate sized Kohkan blooms! LOL!

LYK 2nd generation vine bloom. Love the color pattern on this one!
And on the same LYK vine, I got another one of these lovely and elegant blooms. This vine is almost perfect in everyway except for the fact that there is NO pollen production. I had the same problem with it's mother vine last year. It must be the youjiro gene that is causing this problem. I had no pollen on either Youjiro Yagumura or Yaguruma Blizzard last year also. I believe this vine tends to produce sterile blooms ... oh well, that's why it's good to grow other vines along with it ... use the other vine's pollen.
And this I. purpurea is just a gorgeous hunk of a vine! I am not as fond of I. purpureas because they tend to be rather aggressive and throw too many volunteers in my garden beds, but this one can meander along my fence and I would tolerate it with a smile. It's pattern and colors are so vivid and diverse that it is a real show-stopper in my book. I have at least 10-15 blooms a day so far and the vine is still very young. It produces a LOT of pollen so I am trying to cross it wth Blue Asago Willow and Mutant Blue Needle Leaf Nanding. (Both of those I. nil vines produce tan colored seeds.)
