flower of the year

La Vergne, TN

Well, the year is grinding down did anyone have a flower/plant that they tried and thought WOW? I did with my triple metallic dazzel wazzel daturas. Really it was a triple blooming purple metallic datura, say that fast. Anyway, I started growing them in the greenhouse and lost the tag etc. I forgot what seeds I ordered because it was my year of trial and error. This plant had the strangest smell, like weird coffee. After a month or so the neatest plant started to emerge and when it bloomed WOW, was it great. Yeah, yeah lots of poison and all that but a great plant. Here's a pic. And another cool one was my cardoon, athough it didn't bloom a cool plant anyway.

Kitten - do you have to pull the datura in come winter?

I have never seen that bloom before, but then that is not a surprise as in the limited time that I have been interested in gardening I have been concentrating on vegetables. Trying to reproduce the economic & health benefits that my parents brought to the dinner table.

Since I have been a member here, I have come to enjoy the visual enhancements as well.

Dynamite bloom!

They say it will die back but come back next year. I haven't grown this sincecollege and I don't remember if it came back. They say it's poisonous so now of days what isn't I do know that for my irritable bowel, my meds are made from this now thats cool in a weird way. I'll have to see what happens, I do know I bought the seeds from Thomas Jefferson's Place in VA. It really is neat but now that it's full grown it doesn't smell as strong as it use to. It did get some beetle eating it a month ago but was easily killed. Other than that it has been a great plant as long as it had a little water weekly, without it was droopy. Dyson, tried to leave you a message, thanks for the relaxation tools, it just seemed like I was getting slammed from no where. Now, tell me what new veggie did you try this year?

Visual enhancements are good ---- especially when the critters do their best to devour the veggies before we do - got to have some 'visuals!'

Of course, if you want to consider a visual enhancement --ain't nothing prettier than a squash bloom.

Thanks - if it is poisonous - I may try it.

I mean to confound the deer and rabbits.
I have seen folks discussing on DG - but they always seemed to be in SC - or farther south.

I have been trying to grow a tomato - for three years now (no not the same tomato just trying to get a fruit) Got some the first year. Got some really small carrots the second year & some really small heads of broccoli that year. Think of a salad. Have been tempted to try something radical (since the normal stuff ain't going well).

It is a good thing that I am not used to eating much & still can draw a paycheck.

Wonderfu thread, Dyson! I am the proud grower of a butternut squash! Yes, A. I also have lots of furry neighbors here in the forrest that are pretty well fed. I can grow wildlife food, but I can't seem to get much on my dinner table. I am grateful that my village has a farmers market so taht I can actually eat some of the kinds of plants that I have tried to grow.

Soon to be at the ½ century mark (within a couple of days), I really need to get the story out in cyberspace before the chance is lost. But where to post? maybe jokes & chat (more jokes than chat). It will take awhile - be patient.

dyson, post it here we can spin anything if we try. I love butternut squash. My vet tried to grow squash and pumpkins but was overrun with bugs before he was able to let me know so I could treat them. My Son planted carrots but the entire insect world had a banquet in his honor. Are there any new varieties veggies or flower coming out that we can try, anyone read a good article or see a good website?

oh, here's one what didn't work for you or what insect/disease/weather hit you the hardest. We have to learn this year so we can plan our attack next year>

Kitten, Every year is going to be your learning year. LOL
I've been gardening for more than 60 years more or less and still have'nt had a year i did'nt learn a thing or two.
Thats one of the joys of gardening. Never a dull moment.
Have fun,
Vickie

Your right plants are anything but dull. I love to hear what people experienced in a season because history always repeats itself and I like to have a piece of useless knowledge floating around until the day it's not useless and then I can say aha I got the answer. Thats why talking topeople with similar interest is so much better than using my kids as a sounding board, it's amazing they listen like they always do maybe I should try the dog at least he would look interested for a while!

Jumping in to say I tried Morning Glories for the first time this year and WOW! I had no idea before now that they came in such variety. Up until now, all I had experience with was the invasive bindweed. I was growing the min the back yard and I had a stray seed attached to my glove when I went around front. I gave the seed a flcik into the front bed and this is what came of that one seed...
