fall or spring trasplanting of shrubs? in zone 4

Middleton, WI(Zone 4b)

I messed up. Planted a lilac, ninebark diablo, and a bridal veil spirea way too close to each other. Clearly need to move at least one or maybe two. Can I do it now, or should I wait for spring for best chance of shrubs surviving? All four shrubs went from knee high this spring to shoulder high right now. In fact the spirea has some branches that are about 6 feet high.

Down here, we do that now so they have time to grow some good roots before the spring growth. It seems like that would be true for you too, but I don't know.

I've had the best luck transplanting in the fall. As nan says, it gives the plants time to regenerate a good healthy root system so they can handle the heat of summer better.

Fall is best here,too.

I agree with all the others, fall time and the soil underneath still has a bit of warmth to it from the summer heat, but add a mulch if I were you in your zone this will give extra protection, IF I cant get around to it in fall, then spring is fine but wait till you see weed seed germination as this is a sign that the soil is warming up from winter sleep, good luck.
