I bought a propane burner to take care of the driveway weeds (gravel road) --- When burning ---- how much /how long should I spend on the growth? It takes more than the few seconds I thought it would to burn it to a crisp... and I am wondering if just a blast of heat will eventually kill the top growth --over a period of a few days. Today, my husband had the gravel glowing red--- he said that is what it took to kill the weeds. We do realize that the roots will still be viable regardless of how the top looks. Thanks for input.
To Incinerate or Not...a 'Burning' Question
we've always just mowed, lopped, or chainsawed- depending on the weed. then we rake n burn. ashes is what it will take, n I gather u cant poison. G luck
I'm just talking about driveway growth that pops up through the gravel. I would like to blast it with heat and hope that the heat treatment will kill it over a few days --even if I can't see it. My husband thinks it needs to be turned to ash right then and there.
If the grass around the fire pit in my back yard is scorched by the heat, it kills a lot of it and that may be the way your DH will have to do the driveway. It might take too much time and fuel to incinerate them completely in one pass. Scorching may be the way to go. Have him try a section.
I don't think you need to burn it to a crisp, the heat from the torch will pretty quickly damage the leaves enough that they're not going to recover. However, if you don't want to be sitting there looking at dead weeds then charring them completely will make them go away sooner as the ashes can just blow away.
We have weeds that pop up through the gravel driveway and we use the "old fashioned method" which is to put down salt. You can the pool grade salt by the bag-full at most hardware stores. It works really well for up along the side of the house too where the poison ivy WAS growing! You might give it a try, it's alot less effort and pretty cheap. We just recently moved from the city and I would never have known this trick but, the man of my dreams grew up "in the sticks" with his grandparents and uses much of their knowledge. Just another idea for ya.........
thanks everyone!
