moving a mature grape vinerecommendations? cautions?

Chillicothe, OH

I'm posting this in a couple of places around DG since there's no particular place for viticulture--at least if there is, I couldn't find it

The short version is: a friend, who is moving, gave us a large, mature grape vine, a concord, if we could figure out how to dig it out and move it. I don't think we have the luxury to wait for spring if this is the wrong time to do it. Does anyone here have any suggestions how to proceed? That is, do I trim roots or vine or both or neither, is it totally safe, or unlikely to succeed or is it completely impossible and would it be kinder to the vine if we simply leave the grape for the future owners of my friend's house?

go ahead and cut the vine down to about 12 inches. Then dig up the roots, start about 1foot from the main stem and dig down then up up to get as much root as possible. Once you got it up trim the roots a little to get rid of any fraid of damaged ends. Plant and water, don't plant any deeper than were the plant level is now.

Thanks. These comprehensive suggestions, along with a few others from around D'sG have been very helpful.
