My Baby Magic Had a Seizure Tonight

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

Full moon tonight, wonder if that also means doing dumb things the day before it. I had a slight accident yesterday, Hit my wrist with all my power in a upward motion on a steel beam. very black and blue (yes the color of the plant) and very sore to the touch. I was lucky I hit it flat on the top, did not break anything. And of all things trying to get a vacuum out of a bad spot. The beam was 3" above my head. Animals are smarter than that.

Awwwww, Mary - I'm so sorry . . . honestly, stuff like that hurts so much it can bring us to our knees! Take care of it and pamper yourself!!!

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

OWWW, Mary. Take it easy on your wrist for a while.

Nice moon, Sally

Kathy you missed the Month DEC 18-21st. Not November. That is the most active time.
Actually people who live in areas like Sitka are very in touch with the natural events. They have little stress and human interaction so they are in touch throughout the day with lots of quiet time. They can observe and consider cause and effect. Where in a city too much is being overloaded and many can not meditate on the present. I think that is why living in low interaction areas is for some benificial and others dammaging. The brain is not always a friend.
I wish I had my camera 2 nights ago at the light house. I got up as the moon was plunging (full) into the ocean and the waves and lighting was magnificent! Sorry I could not capture it for you. An Island directly in the moon beam was sparkles of light each time the surf would pound up on the rocky shore. Ahhhhhhhhh Meditation is so simple here. And so is gratitude to a greater being to allow me to realize its beauty.

So -

Magic had another seizure at 2:45 am this morning. So he's on his own schedule apparently.

I have scheduled a vet appointment for him on Monday and will look at meds.

Carnation, WA(Zone 7b)

Hopefully your weekend will be seizure free and they can adjust his meds enough to keep them at bay. Keeping our fingers crossed!

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Thank you!!

Aren't you travelling today?

Whidbey Island, WA(Zone 7a)

Oh, Kathy, I'm so sorry Magic and you are going through this.

Carnation, WA(Zone 7b)

Not me!! Getting to be ALONE for the first time in 14 years..... loving every minute of it. Although I've had hundreds of text messages since they left.Just the furry kids and me home. House sure is quiet. They'll be home very late Saturday night after the game.

Hope Magic is doing better (you too).

oh, kathy, I'm sorry to hear it!

Eugene, OR

Katie....poor Magic, hope it gets taken care of soon.

sofer.....you almost painted that picture, thank you.

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

Magic is just like all of us with his own personal uniqueness. I wouldn't worry and accept his blessing of seizure. Learn not to fear it and know he is only aware of what is different only seconds before it occurs. He is unconscious throughout the entire seizure. Now you try to relax and accept cause with drugs he may not have any more. You are a good mom Kathy and Magic know how lucky he is.

Vashon, WA(Zone 8b)

Kathy, so sorry this seizure problem is continuing. It must be difficult to get through each time because it is physically so dramatic. It is certainly comforting to hear Steve explain what exacerbates them and that there is medication to alleviate or maybe even eliminate the seizures. Maybe this is better than the possibility of plant poisoning though, especially if you don't know what was eaten to cause it. When my dog had his bout with an unidentified compost item, we got him to the vet in 45 minutes (it was a Sunday evening so they had to come in for it) and he got de-toxed as much as they were able with that lag time. He was foaming at the mouth and shaking uncontrollably the whole time. My son, who was 10 at the time, was terrified and hung onto him the whole time.

Mary, hope you wrist is recovering from its bang-up job. OW.

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Thanks so much. I'm getting used to the seizures (if you can say that), but I've been reading up on seizures "begetting" more seizures and don't want to risk that. My big concern with medication is that it will 'dull' Magic - I'm hoping we can use potassium bromide long term rather than phenobarbitol as it's easier on his liver and less likely to make him feel drugged. He has such a wonderful personality; I want him to be able to express it.

It's hard to say which outcome I would have preferred, Holly. You're right. Though even if he has epilepsy and it is treated, I know too much now to relax with him grazing on the plants that are around. I can definitely see my gardening taking a little different turn . . .

Anyway, happy day today - no seizure, Magic had a bath to clean him up from yesterday's seizure - and it was beautiful outside today.

Carnation, WA(Zone 7b)

Glad yesterday was a better day. Hope the vet appt. goes well on Monday.

Union, WA(Zone 8b)

Feeding your dog more fat might help with the seizures. I would try that before meds.

Whidbey Island, WA(Zone 7a)

Kathy, I was sure thinking of you and Magic today. I was walking on the beach (Double Bluff - fabulous area) and saw so many cool dogs, no Silkens though!

I think we're really lucky to have Sofer to give us comfort, info, and positive suggestions. You are appreciated, Steve.

Eugene, OR

Same here Sofer.

Whidbey Island, WA(Zone 7a)

Kathy, did Magic have his appointment today? You both popped into my mind off and on all day.

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Bless you guys for thinking of us. I just got back from the vet - looks like we'll do a liver bile test this weekend to rule out liver problems (though it's unlikely) and then, once we have that back, we'll start a low dose of phenobarbitol. I've been assured that a low dose won't change his personality at all and that phenobarb is considered a long-term solution that he can take the rest of his life, though we'll have to check his liver function periodically and it might take awhile to get exactly the right dose.

Patricia - I'll ask about increasing the fats in his diet and see what the vet says. But since he's having them in clusters, then I think we're all in agreement (3 vets and me) that epilepsy is what we're dealing with.

He got a lot of compliments at the vet on his looks and personality, as usual. It's so tragic to lose him as a breeding dog as he has so many good traits, health, confirmation and personality-wise. I'll likely try to get points on him (finish him if I can) next summer and then I'll have him neutered.

Carole - there isn't much more beautiful at the beach than two sighthounds playing tag. Those wide-open sandy spaces are just made for them!!

Whidbey Island, WA(Zone 7a)

Glad you're finding the answers for your dear boy, Kathy! Once it's all figured out, life with him (and for him) will feel normal again, I am sure!

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

Hope you find the problem, sending my love.
And a few others.
From Corky my oldest. sending her love.

Hi Katie, So sorry about Magic but if it makes you feel any better Boo had a seizure on the 14th as well. It was about 11 in the morning. No very bad. Kind of a weird time he usually has them in the evenings or bedtime. I just talk to him and tell him how great he is and in the mean time throwing Punch's (trying to connect) with Turtle who thinks oh this is a great new game lets run by and bite his leg and bark uncontrollably at him. Lets get him while hes down. The meds do help. We rescued boo and he was on a short rope tied to a tree. Magic knows how lucky he is to have you. Boo always tries to get to me when he is going to have a seizure. You just need to keep them close. It take Boo about 15 minutes to recover and he is back to his old self.

I had a little dog pee wee who was blind from glaucoma and he lived to be 18 and it was harder on me than them. They live in the now and don't really know any difference. It is harder on us than them. Magic will be fine and it is a part of life.

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

That is surely a loving look from Corky. Mary, please send some scritches back to all your gang.

Thanks, Carole. Morning meds will now be pain meds for Nick and anti-seizure meds for Magic. They'll get these in a little bit of peanut butter. Vana, and Bug and Sahara get their p-butter, too, of course. :-)

Wow, Heidi - so Boo knows the seizures are coming, huh? Poor boy. I'm so glad he has you to make him feel safe. I worry more about Magic's peace of mind than the seizures themselves (silly, I know). I hate that it makes them worry and makes them feel vulnerable. Magic has always had his while he was in the middle of sleeping - activity hasn't yet triggered them.

That Turtle!!! Sahara jumped up last night when Magic rolled onto his back in sleep and went to check to make sure it wasn't a seizure. So she definitely has the visual image of him down. And she's only seen a couple of them. I'm not used to having a dog who's so interested in communicating with the humans.

Thanks for the moral support. The mechanics I can handle, I just feel so bad for them. Heidi, Boo and Magic need to start their own special club.

That is one beautiful Tabby cat! Be sure to tell her so, Tills, although I sense that she knows it already.

Kathy, I'll bet Magic doesn't miss a beat.. Too bad that you won't breed him, but then, my guess is he's mostly a pet anyway, right? He's lucky you love him, regardless of seizures. I'd like to see a photo of sighthounds on the sand!

Vashon, WA(Zone 8b)

Kathy, my heart is warmed by the stories of how well your dogs take care of each other in your family. What sweethearts you have!

Eugene, OR

Katie.....here's hoping the meds work quickly, so things can go better for both of you. Animals have more sense and can sense more than people sometimes. Always, when I'm sick, my cats are by my side. When I had dogs, it was the same....they just know when you need comforting. Whenever I trim one cat's nails the other has to come see what's going on, especially if it's Gretchen, she doesn't like it one bit and tells me so.

Tilly...Corky is precious, nice comfy bed she has.

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

Many Siezures are during 'REM' or dreaming phase of sleep. This is when the brain is most active and seizures follow the brain wave stimulus.

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Thanks, Steve - that's what I was thinking. He's just sleeping too deeply. Maybe I need to keep him awake.

Melissa - I co-own Magic and, though he's 100 percent a family member, I had hoped to breed him when I first got him. He would have contributed so greatly to the Silken breed.

Sally - funny story . . . I was at the nieghbors for an informal gathering on Saturday night. I took Bug with me. Before we all headed from the food into a room to watch a movie, I decided to go upstairs to the bathroom. When I called Bug to come in with me (people were going in and out of the house and I was trying to keep him out of the way), he "bolted" downstairs into a living room because he thought I was going to give him a bath.

When I closed the door to the bathroom, my neighbor said he ran to the bathroom door, afraid that I'd get out the other side!! What a goofball. Afraid to be with me, afraid not to. They are so senstivie, Holly, which is nice. But Magic would just have done what I asked with absolutely no concern about what was next. That little bit of "not so worried" would have been great to add to the mix.

Anyway, Bug got lots of lovin' from one of the guys at the party - he's great for petting when you're watching a movie. Nice and soft and smells good. Sort of like a cat (but without the claws).

And they are aweseom when you're sick (except for the part where they end up hogging the bed while they're "comforting" you). LOL

Eugene, OR

Sounds like Bug found the right kind of guy. Isn't it amazing how much room a cat needs on a bed? Dogs you expect, especially big ones, but a cat? Pookie (a siamese mix I rescued) has a hard time when I take a shower, she doesn't want me to shut the bathroom door, can't figure out why. Usually I just put her out, then when I open the door she has her nose through it before it's all the way open, silly girl. But she's a love.

Thumbnail by Sally_OR

Oh, that is a shame, Kathy. I didn't know you were that invested in breeding him. He is a beautiful dog.

That's funny about the bathroom door. Both my dogs try to open the bathroom door to get in. I'm not sure what they think I'm doing in there, but Fran generally ends up laying her body across the threshold, completely blocking the path of anyone going in, or coming out! If I forget she is there I am likely to trip over her. When she flops down, I swear she says 'Harrrummph!'. Just expressing herself, I guess.

Sally, that is a beautiful cat!

My daughter rescued a cat recently. Please raise your hand if you saw that one coming. She has been wanting a pet for so long. She was leaving her work one night last week and a kitty was wandering around downtown and attached itself to her. I just pray she isn't allergic to it. Allegedly she is going to try to find the 'owner' (as if it even has one), but I see the handwriting on this wall. No collar. She is going to take it to see if it has a chip, but hope springs eternal. I believe she will end up being part of the animal underground communication network.

Eugene, OR

Little acorns don't fall far from the tree.

And thank you about my Poo. She's sleeping beside me right now, she's always close by, such a great companion.

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Ooooh. Pix, I'm excited for your daughter. In some cases your body will adjust to allergies. I know that I developed an allergy after having been away from cats (was allergic when I went back home to visit my folks who had my childhood cat) with itching and sneezing . Now I live with way too many and I don't have any symptoms at all.

I often have multiple canine and feline visitors when I'm in the bathroom, so I've given up trying to close the door. It's a good thing I live alone. So far, nobody's jumped into the tub when I'm showering (yet).

Sally, Poo is pretty darn cute!!

Here's my latest addition: Spike . . . and he is already making my heart happy.

I forgot to mention that the mess on his face is when he bumped into the Nutri-cal instead of eating it! (Because he's so small he is apparently prone to hypoglycemia so I was advised to have this on hand when I picked him up at the airport . . . however, he was fine - much more interested in being held, fed, played with!)

Kingston, WA

Oh what a handsome little man. He is priceless. I love little dogs. I have medium size ones know but I loved pee wee handsome man tons. Spike reminds me of him. He will keep you busy. Congrats. Heidi

Vashon, WA(Zone 8b)

What a cute little tyke! Sure to be a bundle of love and frisky fun.

Union, WA(Zone 8b)

So glad to see your little furface. He is a cutie. Should be lots of fun.
