I have a few sandcherry bushes that are growing way too big - they have also developed a bug problem of some sort. Can I trim them back now (my meter reader would probably appreciate it) or do I have to wait till spring after those pretty little flowers disappear?
They have gotten little holes chewed on a lot of the leaves so that's why I am saying a bug problem - any solutions for that?
I live in Windsor, ON. if that makes any difference in how to treat things.
(If you can't tell - I totally new at this)
Sand cherry bushes
You may not get any flowers on them in the spring if you cut back now. If that's not a big deal to you, then give them a haircut. I think they will rebound ok. I've never cut mine back though, so don't take my word as gospel.
Hi Sharsam. It is nice to see a post from a fellow Canadian. I live in Sydney, N.S.
I have two sandcherries as shrubs in my perennial garden. I can attest to the fact that if you cut them back now, there will be no flowers in the spring. That happened to me last year. However, if you have a bad bug problem, you might be better off triming them back. Do you know what bug it is? Most of the time around here, we have problems with earwigs eating foilage. If you go outside after dark, with a flashlight, you can probably see what bug it may be. I know these earwigs come out after dark and do their dirty work. Good luck.--Phyllis
