I have a healthy Knockout Rosebush that's on its second year, and it bloomed profusively most of the summer here in Kansas City. I haven't done anything to it since I planted it last year except water, and its shape is really uneven. Should I trim it? When? Also, should I remove the spent blooms? I'm planning to put compost and mulch around it before frost, but what kind? Any info would be greatly appreciated!
How should I prepare my Knockout Rosebush for winter?
You should prune off the spent blooms. They really don't require winter protection in your area, but you can certainly do so.Light pruning is OK right now.Not pruning too much in the fall actually makes them more hardy. In the spring, prune for shape and remove any damaged branches. All roses benefit from feeding during the growing season.Knockouts can be lightly trimmed all summer to keep their shape.
