snapdragons won't bloom

Los Angeles, CA

hi, this is my first time on this site and i am very excited to have found such a great resource!

i just started gardening a year ago, so i apologize if any of my questions are lame.

my question:
last year i lived by the beach in santa monica and had amazing luck with my snapdragons. since then i moved inland (near downtown los angeles) so that i could have more land to garden on. thinking i was good with snapdragons i bought a ton of them (in june). the original blooms only lasted a few weeks and now 4 months later they have no blooms. i have been taking good care of them (even though they are potted) and my other plants (impatience, fushcias) are doing really well.

is it just too hot still? or am i not doing something i should be doing? the plants are certainly alive and giving me a lot of baby green leaves.

thanks so much and i look forward to hearing from you!

Sandy there are no lame gardening questions!

I think it might still be too warm there, there just started blooming again here.

Woodway, TX(Zone 8a)

Here they quit flowering when it gets cold, but start flowering again about the end of February and are glorious for several weeks.

Snapdragons are essentially a "cool season annual". Planted in the fall here in So.Cal, they will often times start blooming in early winter and continue until about Mid-June or sometimes up to the beginning of July.

They don't like our intense summer heat, and will stop producing flowers when the heat begins.

Depending on how hot the summer is, you can sometimes save them and they'll act as a perennial...but this summer was pretty hot, so you're probably better off setting out new plants around the middle of this month, and discard the old ones.

Thank you all for your responses. The temperature just dropped here, so I am hoping that will help. Certainly some little critter is also treating the leaves as a buffet, but hopefully in the next few months I will see some blooms.

Again thank you all for your input.
