last time, I was reacting to thyroid meds. just got put on one- I'd already called Ken this morning about changing it.
y'all Texas chicks have too much fun at too many round ups!! I have to wait for one or two a year here.
we're all over 30 here? you know of any city folk young'uns learning to sew? or even having access to a machine?
Mama gave me scraps from my dresses to make into dolly clothes. I was and still am clumsy with a needle and thread, but she showed me how to use her old singer with a treadle around age?? then she enrolled me in a 4-H class in junior high, she had to hostess the class to get one. during 1st marriage, about never saved enough for my Elna, ex was always demanding $$ for something he needed.
۞Sweet Interruption۞ 36
Bon, I do hope they can get your meds straightened out soon. I know those headaches can be bad. Take care
LK
LK, raq quilts and purses are made the same way. They both have batting and backing. BJ made hers with flannel cut the same size as the squares for her batting. It has more layers to fray and makes it fluffier.
a sewing notebook I agree WHY? silly teacher
LK I'm out collecting seeds so I have a lil more then what I posted for trade LOL...maybe BJ will bring a purse along so we can see it up close
anyone is welcome to come to any of the RU's if they are in the area or want to make a trip this way..the more the merrier. plants are not a must either as there is always plenty to go around extra.
yes bon I hope they get things straigthened out for ya too stinks when your not feeling well
The first one (purple with white chenille) I made I used the batting just like the instructions said... 2nd one (John Deer fabric) was layered with flannel. The 3rd one has 2 layers of flannel between, + batting in the center of the blocks... that's pushing it a bit, and I would not recomend it... have a blister on my thumb from clipping through all those layers of flannel... however, I do like the end result of the last one better.
BUT, for a rag quilt I wouldn't use all those layers... would be way too heavy...
For the purse, it just made it more substantial.
Sewing......Home Ec.....4H.....did all of those. I can do a fair job if I have to....Just have to get all the stars (time, money, interest) aligned. Laura finally got interested and to some classes in College and can do a pretty good job if decides she wants to make something.
Headaches!!!! My brother in law has had really massive headaches for the past twenty years....just this year they finally found a specialist is doing something for him.....I will have to ask my sis for more details...!!!! I could not survive what he has been through!
Sounds very interesting. Bj, will you bring a purse to show off please? We would like to see it up close.
LK
Well, you'll see a purse up close on Friday, LK... but Yes... I would do that.
BJ, have we seen your third purse? I'd love to see the results of all those layers. Do you have spring action snippers? Hancock's had them on sale so I got some yesterday. Makes a huge difference when clipping seams. I'm working on a tote for my daughter now using the Moda 'Oh My Dog' squares purchased on ebay. It will be one row deeper than the purse. More like a book bag. Once it's done I'm going to try to get a little more creative and start on a quilt.
Trishia, after taking all those classes you must be very domestic!
Yes, I did show a pic of the 3rd one,,, but it was at the bottom of the last thread... here it is again.
I'm thinking that now that I'm on a roll.. I might get ambitious enough this winter to do a rag quilt too... Lord knows, I have enough cotton fabric... been trying to think of how I was going to use it all. Tia Tina was going to make me one, but now that I have more confidence in it, I might do it myself.
NO... I didn't know there was such a scissor that would help in clipping those seams... sheesh, my hands are sore... I'll have to look into that.
What is the old saying something about," yes I am domestic, I live in a House"......LOL!
LOL Cute Trisha
BJ, those spring scissors are nice, but how about the rotary cutter. They are so nice, and quick!
LK
I have a rotary cutter, mat, and the acrylic straight line rulers for cutting quilt squares... use it all the time... didn't know about the spring action scissors though.
So, do they spring toward the closed position like to help snip seams? or spring to the open position ??? Just did a search and all I can find are spring to the open position... would really make life easy if they did the snipping for me.
You all had me so hungry for breakfast by the time I got home!!!LOL I made scrambled eggs with onions, peppers, and shrooms and cheese, bacon, O'brien style pots and toast with homemade strawberry jam grams made:) YUUUUMMMM-that was my lunch/dinner=linner:)
OK-so I guess someone else is about to loose!!LOL
LK-10/5-choccies-LOST;)
Cindy-10/7-one of those cool jar oil candel things
Marion-10/8-a quillow
Jaye-10/9-a Xmas Cactus
Bon-10/8-an iris
Kathy 10/7-not sure what she is betting-maybe a baby chick??
It is hard though as I really have like NOOOO self control....
You guys still have my head buried with the lack of faith in my self control!!LOL
Oh yes we have confidence in your will power Stacey, but not gifts :P
Okay sistahs, I think Marion may have this already. For those interested in quilting, a rotary cutter, a mat and 2 sizes acrylic rulers and a sewing machine can make it easy. But I've found this new tool to be heaven send! It's a Shape Plus Cut cutting guide mat, that has slots and make strip piecing so much faster.
I got the largest size, and some places are selling it for less than $37.
Found also the smaller ones from Wallyworld that could be used to cut fringes on rag flannel or denim quilts.

and here's a video :

OM, Jaye, that is a 'must have'! My Christmas list is getting longer and longer ..... lol!
Now why did you have to go and show that! That is such a neat idea. I have not seen that one before.
LK
Lolol!! Forget the Christmas list. You need it now, Debra.
LK... I can't be broke by myself!
You would enjoy the mat. No more hitting against the acrylic ruler. And the wonderful thing is you can avoid the "V" when cutting folded materials.
Line up the selvedges and strip away.
I also had one of those paper cutter type thingy to strip fabric...don't even buy that!!! Waste of money for me.
oh - took a new migraine med - I've been asleep! Randall awoke me in time for pizza for dinner and Dancing with the Stars. feel better, but lost my day.
ah me. my Christmas list is full, but these sewing assets - maybe stocking stuffers...
at our house, Stockings are always filled with odd little necessities. a small pack of gourmet coffee, a small bottle of coffee flavorings, always new toothbrushes, mints, listerine strip paks, new shoelaces and shoe polish, stuff like that. I did it once when things were tight moneywise, and its one of my older children's favorite traditions - they say without me they'd never remember to get new toothbrushes, hairbrushes, listerine paks, etc.
Hey Bon can I send stockings to your house to get filled??? the ones I have for my kids were knitted by a dear friend in Ann Arbor and they stretch as they are filled then I could get lots of goodies ....hahahahaha
sure hope the new meds help
Ah Jaye there is another way to make sure you don't get the "V" when you cut strips. When you fold you fabric selvage to selvage, look at the bottom, if it is pulled (most always will be)or a roll; then you slide on selvage side right or left until the fabric hangs straight with no pulling in any direction. Yes, you lose some fabric when you square it but you will not have "V"s when you cut. Could you follow that? Only do about 1/2 to 1 yard at a time and every now and then check to see if the fabric has shifted by placing the quilters square/ruler on the fold and see if it lines up along the cut edge of the fabric. Have I befuddled everyone now?
Had a really busy day. Kim had labs and appointments and when we returned home I had a headache. Just put myself to bed for a nap and feel much, much better. I hate just sitting and waiting--wears me out worse than working does!!
Thanks Marion. I tend to shift the acrylic ruler sometimes, even though I hold it down flat, unless Kel's doing it.
But with this new mat, my palm stays put or 'grip' the fabric better.
Please do rest Marion and take it easy tomorrow.
Phyllis and Bon, I never owned a Christmas stocking. So, if any of you wanted to start a stocking stuffer for me, go ahead :D

lightly sand it to rough it up. Or let Kel hold it either way.
I am going to bed earlier tonight. I think it was just all the sitting a waiting in labs and doctor's offices. Wanted to stay home but she ask me to go so like a "good" mother, I did. LOL Wonder what she did before I moved here.
Oh yeah, I even purchased those rulers with 'grips' underneath. Recalling years...years ago, I'd use a heavy piece of wood to lay on my fabrics.
See you tomorrow my sistahs. Have a good night's sleep and Bon, if those headaches don't go away, you need to see a doctor!
Dang... went to bed, couldn't sleep, so I came here and everyone is already in bed....
Debra... have you seen these?
http://www.bonnercreations.com/patchworkbags1.html
Got up for some water.
BJ, you and Debra could start a small business selling those bags.
Ok..back to bed..
well, since I slept from 2pm to 8pm, I'm still up, but Phyllis do you really need meto send you a new toothbrush>>> maybe I'll get the really bit bottle of listerine in your stocking, if you do!!!
think I'll say goodnight to
BJ-the ones with the belts are AWESOME!!!
Jaye-honey-I am sending you and Uncle Kel stockings this year then!! Everyone deserves a stocking!! Just let me know what kind of deoderant you eahc wear;) I Got the rest all under control!! Uncle Kel will be getting Beano and some stiky air fresheners for the seat of his pants!!LOL
My mom was always real good with stockings-she always filled 2 for me-1 from Santa and 1 from her;) Now she fills one and DH fills one!!LOL I get deoderant, toothbrushes, mints, gum, funny little things, chapstick, lotions, stuff like that-I LOVE opening it!!
It's so much fun to buy little stufies for the stockings!
Mornin girls
Well we had rain and rain an drain and thunder and lightening last night but I still slept I think LOL
LOL no not really Bon I think I can get my own toothbrush when needed LOL
Good Morning Glory sistahs and niece!
Stacey, you might just have to purchase the company that makes those sticky air fresheners for Uncle Kel. And also, he needs it triple strenth!! :0)
BJ, some places are selling them for more than 30 each. You and Debra could sell them here on the Marketplace, with no fees. Close to Christmas, might get some sales.
Not me Phyllis, the slightest meow made by one of my babies, and I'll be up. Mind you the bedroom door will be closed and the aircondition running. Unfortunately quite a light sleeper whereas Kel would sleep through a cannon blast!
Bon, I pray NO MORE HEADACHES for you.
Laura, have you seen the allergist yet?
Sis, how's Baby Jaye doing. You talk to it each morning like the rest? Sing to it please :D
Trisha, Laura, Cindy, LK (watch that foot gal), Maid Marion, hope you all have a fantastic day today.. and oh yes, even you who's lurking ^_^
Good morning! Lost satellite connection last night due to storms. Still off and on as cloud cover gets heavier.
Jaye, that is a great concept and you're right, need one now.
BJ, cute bags! Have you looked on ebay? That's where I get lots of ideas. Still love that pig quilt.
Marion, hope you are feeling better. Sitting is tiring and hard on the neck and back.
Lots of talk about stockings. They are fun. My DSIL brings stockings for everyone and they are stuffed with goodies. Each and every thing is individually wrapped. You've never seen adults have so much fun.
Unless we are rained out, I'm to sit with my DD from noon until 6pm at a booth in a park today. I think it's for her dog rescue group - but didn't even ask! It's at a Domestic Violence Awareness festival being held at the park in her town. Been storming all night but hoping it will pass by noon.
Hope everyone has a great day.
Yep, it stormed most of the night here too... got 2" of rain last night. But it's supposed to be nice today.
Morning Glories !!!
Jaye... I don't have time to make those bags for the Market Place... I'm just trying to get some things made for Christmas... Got lots to do between now and then.
Stockings... I hang our stocking every year, but we don't stuff them anymore... don't know why, we just don't.
I NEED TO VENT.
I know I'm suppose to just sit back and let the "smart" people take care of things, but I have to worry about how those "smart" people are playing around with our future.
Back before school started Dallas School Board passed a policy that no child will be left behind... #1. Teachers can no longer fail a student... which means, even if a student does NOTHING, they must pass them on to the next grade level. #2. If a student fails a test, or an assignment, they have to give them multiple opportunities to re take the test or re do the assignment. #3. Teachers are to concentrate primarily on teaching students to pass the standardized test. Which we all know those tests are not a reflection of what EVERYONE needs to know in the real world.
NOW, bear in mind that Dallas Schools are way down the list on academic excellence even before all this. Also, Dallas is well known for their overcrowded classrooms.
NOW... they're laying off 1,100 employees. 550 of them are teachers, 100 of them are principals and asst principals... and the rest are office personnel. All because someone (those smart people we trust to run things) have miss-spent school funds and have caused a $84 million deficit in the budget.
These layoffs are only going to cause the class rooms to be even more overcrowded, causing less attention to the student's needs, and deteriorate teacher moral even more. ONLY the students will suffer from this. BUT, we have to pass them on to the next grade, and graduate them to go out into society.
If our children are our future... I'm really really worried.
OK, I'm done ranting... sorry.
Ranting to the choir, BJ ... ranting to the choir. That doesn't help the situation, but know I'm hearing you. Little Rock has been in dire straits for a long time. Our $ goes to federal lawsuits and overseers.
....and there are no cutbacks to favorite football programs.... but library funds will be reduced...what music band??
Need to check how much we're paying these smart people. Aren't they made of the same cloth as those Lehman CEOs?
Yep... and to think... those "smart" people running things are the same ones my parents were talking about when I was in school and they used to say "... what's this world coming to?" They used to say the same thing about "the kids these days... the ones who will be running our country tomorrow"... that's MY generation that's messing all this up... double disgusting...
taks tests BJ?
they do them over here too and the push is for them to pass and they have tutoring time after school to help those that don't pass the first time. You can not graduate if you do not pass it as a senior
It is so sad they do this to the kids they are not prepared for everyday life
Maybe IF enough parents and other people in the communities were to speak up and make a big enough noise the administration would change things
If they would talk of dropping the football believe me people would pay attention then
