Lin,

Love the picture! It's really dreary here today, so your sunny picture is just what I needed!

We are having a blue sky, beautiful, sunny day here in Florida.

Kinda rainy here...had a fire in the woodstove yesterday afternoon while we watched the debates. Warm and cozy!!! and dry!!!

(Zone 1)

Carol, Aren't you in Hawaii? ^_^ You had a fire in the woodstove? hmm ... Ok, I am easy to fool so I don't know if you are serious or joking, LOL. Is it cool enough there for a fire? I bet it was cozy but Wow, I thought it was always too warm in Hawaii for a fireplace. What are your lowest and highest temp's?

Still waiting for polyneura to bloom - sometimes it seems like they take forever! (tapping foot impatiently!)

Whoa Karen! Great picture... you're getting good with that new camera!

:)

(Zone 1)

That is a great photo Karen. Gee, I wish someone would invent a camera with a brain so I could take decent photo's. ^_^ Every once in awhile I will get lucky and a picture will turn out half way decent, but most of the time they are out of focus or just don't come out as good as I thought they would while I looking through the viewfinder on the camera!

Macon, IL(Zone 5b)

Thanks Barb and Lin - I've been playing with the camera - maybe some day I'll really understand how to work it!

Karen

I agree, wow, you can see the form of the little flowers underneath their "sheath". It won't be long now!!

My australis is blooming her head off again. The fragrance is overwhelming. I, personally, don't care for it. DH says it smells like moldy jasmine. LOL

Here's obscura, blooming for the first time on one peduncle. I didn't reasize that the flowers would be so tiny. I love the way the leaves turn red from the sun. It gets morning sun.

Here's a closeup of the flower. Sorry it's so blurry, but it was a windy day. I took over 20 pictures, and they were all the same. LOL

Hi Eileen!

We've been having some windy days lately here too! But, beautiful, sunny days! I think a bit of fall is finally finding it's way to Florida, lower humidity which is great and our high on Sunday is only supposed to be 78! I love it!

Oooh, your DH thinks australis smells like moldy Jasmine? I love the fragrance of Jasmine but can't say I've ever experienced moldy Jasmine! LOL. You don't like the scent of australis either? I've always thought the foliage was interesting but now that mine has one bloom I am really loving it. It smells faint but wonderful to me! One of my favorite fragrances so far! It's interesting how we all differ in opinion when it comes to our sense of smell, isn't it?

I just love obscura! Ever since seeing someone's photo with that gorgeous foliage I've had that on my must have list! I hope Gessiegail finds it for me when she stops in at one of her favorite nurseries at the end of the month!

Hi Lin
I like the regular night blooming jasmine. When I was a child growing up in San Diego, we had a bush outside the living room window. I slept in that room in a 'murphy bed' (for you younger folk, a murphy bed is a bed that folds up into the wall) and the fragrance from that bush was so beautiful. I didn't know at the time what it was. I had to grow up and learn about plants to find out it was jasmine. The australis has six peduncles on this one plant, and I have another smaller on with four peduncles. They are all blooming and smelling up the lanai. During the day it's not so bad, but in the evening it's too strong. Last year it was blooming when the weather was cold. I had the two of them hanging in the bathroom from the shower stall. It was terrible. I've posted the story before saying that it smelled like a horse's latrine. LOL.
I also like the obscura. It's so dainty. I have quite a few newer ones that haven't bloomed yet. I'm still waiting. I hope you get your obscura. You'll love it!

(Zone 1)

LOL, re: the murphy bed! When we were first married and my DH was in the Navy we were in San Diego (Coronado) for a few months while he attended school. We rented an apartment that had a murphy bed! They are coming back into style from what I hear!

I have always loved the scent of Jasmine and Honeysuckle ... I was born in the south (Virginia) and you find both down here. My Mom always liked Jasmine but couldn't breathe when the night blooming stuff was in full bloom and the windows were open. When she and my Dad lived in Jacksonville the next door neighbors had a huge jasmine on the side of the house where mom & dad's bedroom was. She couldn't sleep with the window open at night when that plant was blooming, she always said it took her breath away and she couldn't breathe! The neighbors heard someone talking about mom and her problem with the blooming jasmine so they dug it up and transplanted it elsewhere in their yard! I thought that was so very thoughtful! Mom did too but she kept telling them they didn't have to do that! She was embarrassed! They were a sweet elderly couple she had as neighbors.

Now, you mention about having two australis in the house during cold weather? I had my large ds-70 and two lacunosa in the house for a short while last winter when we were having a few cold nights. I had one lacunosa in the study and the other one in the bedroom and the ds-70 was in the front bathroom. My house is small and the fragrance was so overwhelming, I ended up having to take them all back outside!

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

When I was born in Honolulu, my parents lived in the hills above Pearl Harbor... In the back was a Night Blooming Jasmin planted where the rubbish was kept and collected by the city. We have always called NBJ "Night Blooming Garbage Pail".... I have it planted all around the property and whack it back with a machete...and the scent is wonderful!!!

Carol

Teguise, Spain

Carol, is the 'night blooming jasmine 'you have Cestrum nocturnum, or an actual jasmine? Ive seen what I think is Cestrum nocturnum here, but havent bought one as what I have seen has no fragrance during the day, and the nursery is closed at night so I cant sniff it. I have several jasmines and each has a different smell, and a different fragrance time..where as I love them all, some people have commented some smell like cat pee

Cape Coral, FL(Zone 10a)

Karen, great photo!
Ima, your australis is beautiful. I have large one but no flowers yet.
I do love my obscura.

Hoya australis ssp tenuipes blooms FINALLY opened! You're right, Lin, they have a Heavenly fragrance. Boy do I wish these bloomed more often.

Some more H. linearis opened, too. :)

SOB...I will never see a H. linearis like that!!!

Dom, yes. It is Cestrum nocturum, I am glad I followed someone's advice and I didn't plant more than one next to the house. When it is in full bloom it is almost too much!!! Easy to control, I whack mine back after blooming and they recover quickly and bloom soon again.

All the blooms are so beautiful !!!! And the dialogue informative too!! I learn so much here.

My pinkie has opened all the way. It smells heavenly too - I would have said, the finest french perfume.

Very nice, Katie!

Barb

Thanks much.

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

bjf-Barb, your linearis is beautiful. That is one hoya that is on the top of my want list. Come spring, I'll be looking to purchase it. Right now I'm trying to make room for what I have. Once I figure out where to put new ones', I'll shop. LOL

Huntsville, AL(Zone 7a)

Thanks, Eileen! How well I understand the "make room for another one" situation. We are supposed to have a low in the mid-40's tonight and I'm playing mind games trying to figure out which one will go where in the musical-hoya chairs thing. Our plants never cease to make life interesting for us, eh? :)

Ha ha!
My hoya, orchid, amaryllis, cacti, succulent collections keep moving in and out and now from shelf to shelf. If ever there was anyone who needed a greenhouse......

Huntsville, AL(Zone 7a)

It is most certainly YOU, Kathy! Your orchid collection alone would warrant a GH of its own. ;)

Macon, IL(Zone 5b)

Polyneura finally opened - I have three blooms on the plant, and they are pretty. No detectable scent (at least for me).

Barb, you understand me!! Have you been lurking in Orchids?

Congrats on the polyneura, Karen. Isn't it like red rubies?? Mine is on top of an armoire so I couldn't tell if there was a scent.

Cape Coral, FL(Zone 10a)

Here is a rather small retusa in bloom. Smells wonderful on those dainty flowers.

Karen and Jan -
You both give me hope for my plants! Great photos!
Kelly

Huntsville, AL(Zone 7a)

lol, Kathy. I lurk over there as often as possible cuz I'm the newest newbie when it comes to orchids. They seem to grow and bloom in spite of my care, so I figure a bit of knowledge couldn't hoit!!
Karen, congratulations on the polyneura blooms. What a beauty that one is. I've killed enough of them, though, so I'll enjoy them vicariously through you and Kathy.
Jan, gorgeous retusa! That one still holds the #1 spot on my gotta-have-someday list.
I know you guys are tired of seeing this pubicalyx, but it is putting on a show I just had to share! Here's my 'Pink Silver' - 8 umbels open and one more in the back getting ready to join them. I love Hoyas. :)
